Having Fun on Australia's East Coast – A Perfect Family Travel Itinerary (Gold Coast / Brisbane / Moreton Island / Whitsundays Great Barrier Reef)
According to data previously released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, China replaced New Zealand as Australia's largest source of tourists in 2018. So, we are not unfamiliar with this country. However, when mentioning Australia, most Chinese people still think of well-known cities and attractions like Sydney, Melbourne, and the Great Ocean Road. But in fact, Australia is rich in tourism resources, with unique flora, fauna, and world-class natural landscapes in the north, south, east, and west, making it a country absolutely worth revisiting time and time again.
Four years ago during winter vacation, we devoted our only 10-day holiday to Tasmania, the southernmost paradise of Australia, for our first trip Down Under. This time, we would spend a full 18 days exploring the state of Queensland in eastern Australia. Just hearing its name sounds beautiful and majestic: the Land of Queens! Queensland is a truly blessed place, with over 300 sunny days a year – probably rare anywhere in the world, which is why it's called "Australia's Sunshine State." It is also Australia's most affluent tourist destination, boasting not only a magnificent 2,300-kilometer coastline but also the jewel of ocean wonders – the Great Barrier Reef, one of the "Seven Natural Wonders of the World." It is the only ecosystem visible from the moon and the world's largest coral community and marine park, a ultimate goal for many diving enthusiasts. Additionally, Queensland is one of only two states in Australia where you can hold a koala (the other being South Australia). Brisbane, home to the world's largest koala nature reserve, the Gold Coast with its numerous theme parks and Surfers Paradise, and Moreton Island where you can get up close and hand-feed wild dolphins... all of these deeply attract and tempt us. It is a unique family travel destination that can satisfy the needs of both adults and children!

In most people's concept, our winter is Australia's summer, so if traveling with kids, winter vacation is the best season for Australia. But Queensland has a typical subtropical oceanic climate, humid, sunny all year round, with an average annual temperature above 20 degrees, suitable for travel all year. However, summer (December to February) is hotter, occasionally with temperatures above 35°C, and it is also the rainiest period, often with storms. The focus of our trip: the Whitsundays Great Barrier Reef, has a subtropical climate with no four seasons, only rainy and dry seasons. November to May is the rainy season, muggy and rainy (average maximum temperature around 32°C). The sea is a bit turbid during the rainy season, and with cloudy skies, snorkeling visibility is poor. February to April is also typhoon season, often causing delays or cancellations of boats and helicopters. If a typhoon hits, the whole trip is ruined. Many people I know went to Queensland during winter vacation and experienced rain every day, ruining their plans. So, June to October is best, with stable weather, cool and pleasant, average temperature 23°C, maximum up to 27°C, minimum around 16°C, comfortable for swimming and sightseeing. Not all places in Australia are suitable for winter vacation. So, although the Great Barrier Reef is always there, it is very seasonal. Only by doing your homework and understanding it fully can you see its beauty!
During my trip, many friends on social media asked: "It's winter in Australia now, can you wear so little?" It seems everyone has a big misunderstanding about Australia!
Australia's visa approval rate is quite high, and there are many related posts online, so I won't repeat here.
You can apply online through the visa center website; it's very simple and convenient.
1. International Flights: Shanghai – Brisbane
There are no direct flights from Shanghai to Brisbane; usually need to transit via Hong Kong, Singapore, or Sydney. For international tickets, my years of experience tell me the earlier you buy, the cheaper (of course, there are exceptions, but generally speaking). I usually book tickets 6-8 months in advance and then watch the price slowly rise, feeling like I got a bargain. For peak periods like winter and summer vacations, ticket prices a month before departure can be three to four thousand more than six months earlier. For our family of three, that's over ten thousand. So how could I not be happy? Hehe...
I booked 7 months in advance; round-trip Shanghai to Brisbane (transit in Singapore) cost 4,750 RMB per person.
2. Domestic Flights:
Brisbane – Hamilton Island
Operated by Virgin Australia and Qantas, flight time 1 hour 45 minutes. Since flights are infrequent, check the schedule when planning your itinerary.
I booked 5 months in advance for 492 RMB per person. Prices vary by time slot.
【Hamilton Island Airport Website】
1. Gold Coast:
Recommended accommodation in Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, or Main Beach for convenient transport and shopping. Over 40% of accommodations are in Surfers Paradise, with various star-rated hotels, apartments, holiday houses, and hostels to suit different travelers.
If budget allows, a fully equipped sea-view apartment/hotel is the top choice.
2. Brisbane:
Recommended accommodation near the train station. It's convenient to go from Gold Coast to Brisbane by train, and the station is in the city center, close to South Bank and Queen Street Mall, making transport, shopping, and sightseeing easy.
3. Moreton Island (also known as Dolphin Island):
Tangalooma Island Resort is the only hotel on the island. If not on a day trip returning to Brisbane, you have to stay here, no choice. Highly recommend staying at least one night; various water sports and hand-feeding wild dolphins – there are few such hotels in the world!
4. Hamilton Island:
Hamilton Island is a famous high-end resort island, commonly known as "Rich People's Island." There are many resort hotels with excellent service; free hotel shuttle bus from the airport to your hotel. But not cheap. If on a tight budget, you can go to the Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach, but you won't experience Hamilton Island's beauty itself!
5. Airlie Beach:
Not particularly scenic itself, but much cheaper than Hamilton Island, with good value. Unlike Hamilton which only has high-end resorts, Airlie Beach has various accommodation types: luxury hotels, budget hotels, backpacker hostels... all available to meet different needs.
Time difference between China and Eastern Australia is +2 hours.
Australia's widest coverage network is Telstra. We used this company's SIM card throughout the trip; signal was good and internet fast. It is said that the second largest operator Optus is also good, and cheaper than Telstra if your destinations are not too remote. You can buy a SIM card on Taobao in advance or at the airport after landing. SIM cards are much cheaper than portable WiFi, and portable WiFi needs charging and is heavy to carry!
【How to get from Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast】
1. Airtrain: The most cost-effective way from Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast is the Airtrain. Journey about 1.5 hours, very frequent – every 15 minutes during peak, every 30 minutes off-peak. Fare: Single $34.50 AUD/adult, $7.7 AUD/child; Return $67 AUD/adult, $15.5 AUD/child.
Booking tickets on the official website offers discounts: 5% off if booked on the day or day before, 10% off 2-6 days before, 15% off 7+ days before. We, one adult and one child, paid $42.2 AUD, with a $5.17 AUD discount, actual payment $37.03 AUD.
So booking online 7 days in advance is cheaper, and you can check timetables and station names.
Robina, Nerang, and Helensvale stations have bus connections to the city center. Choose the nearest station to your Gold Coast hotel, then take a bus or walk.
But considering our flight arrived at 19:30, and after immigration, my husband wasn't with us – just two women with luggage – we opted for a pick-up service.
2. Brisbane Airport Transfer Service:
Advantage: Direct transfer from Brisbane Airport to any Gold Coast hotel, very convenient, no walking or transfers. Adult 240 RMB, children 1-13 years old 124.8 RMB.
Disadvantage: More expensive than Airtrain, fixed departure times, other passengers may cause waiting.
Because the travelogue cannot include other platform info, if you want to know the booking platform and method, you can privately message me on Weibo. Same for various activities later!
1. After booking, you'll receive an e-ticket. Print it in advance, go to the carrier's counter at the airport to check in, and the staff will tell you the pickup point.
2. Each person is allowed one suitcase and one carry-on bag; extra items incur additional charges.
3. Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast hotels: Earliest 7:00, latest 23:00. If flight delayed, wait for the next transfer.
3. Of course, the most convenient and fastest is taxi. If cost is not an issue, you can directly take a taxi or charter a car.
【Paradise Centre Apartments】:
We stayed in a 270-degree sea-view high-rise apartment in the heart of Surfers Paradise, just 20 meters from the beach, with sea views from the balcony. It was dark when we arrived, but sliding open the balcony door revealed a stunning view that made me exclaim "Wow!" – all fatigue vanished!
We booked an executive one-bedroom apartment of 83 sqm. Although the same size as a one-bedroom, it was more expensive due to better location and wider sea view. Living room, fully equipped kitchen, and laundry facilities. This was our home for the next 5 days. Photo taken the next day:
Rooftop outdoor pool and tennis court.
Later on the second day, we discovered a large shopping mall next to the building, accessible from the 4th floor, with a large supermarket. Less than 200 meters from Surfers Paradise shopping center, many restaurants and bars, and an Asian food street. Across the street was a Xiao Tian Fu Mala Xiang Guo. Right outside the front door was the airport bus stop (probably Gold Coast airport bus), and the back door diagonally opposite was the light rail station. Oh my, the location was fantastic!
Lying in bed enjoying the night view – so enjoyable!
Alright, let's suppress the excitement and sleep early. Only with plenty of energy can we be happier tomorrow!
Today is a rest day, no special plans. Wake up naturally, sunlight streaming through the curtains. First thing after getting up: go to the balcony and another "Wow!" – so beautiful!
Easily got the life of "facing the sea, with spring blossoms"!
After dressing up, we went out to find food!
Staying here is so convenient – just 20 meters to the beach, with a row of restaurants. Chose one, sent little C to order, while mom just sat back and enjoyed. Haha...
When the east coast breeze touched my face, the holiday began!
This place has a name that makes you want to vacation – Gold Coast, located south of Queensland's capital Brisbane. East facing the sea, west backed by mountains, sunny all year round. Golden beaches, lush rainforests, and diverse activities attract millions of tourists each year. The most famous beaches are Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, and Main Beach.
Gold Coast's biggest highlight: world-class, year-round waves! Our area is named "Surfers Paradise" – truly worthy!
Known as the Miami of the Southern Hemisphere, Surfers Paradise is a major tourist hub. Every day you see surfers from all over the world riding the waves!
There are many surf clubs. Initially I thought of signing Cici up for a class, but then realized we only had 5 days, minus two days at parks, we could only have 3 lessons – just getting started and addicted, then have to stop – too frustrating. We'll find another opportunity later!
Below our apartment is the Surfers Paradise shopping pedestrian street, Center Surfers Paradise, the largest shopping center in Surfers Paradise, at the corner of Surfers Paradise Boulevard and Cavill Avenue. Over a hundred specialty shops, including international brands, DFS, trendy boutiques, and souvenir shops.
Strolling around, feeling the daily life of Gold Coast!
【What is Go Card?】
A public transport card usable in Gold Coast and Brisbane – trains, light rail, buses, and Brisbane's CityCat ferries. Using Go Card saves about 30% on fares, with off-peak discounts of 50%. From Monday to Sunday, after 9 swipes, the 10th swipe and beyond are free (except Brisbane Airport train). Convenient and discounted – highly recommended if not driving.
【How to buy Go Card?】
Buy at airport tourism counters, Airtrain, or light rail stations. Only some stations have staffed ticket offices; most use self-service machines. A deposit of $10 AUD ($5 for children/seniors, refundable upon card return). Minimum top-up $5 AUD; machines do not give change. It's said 7-Eleven sells them too, but I haven't tried, so just hearsay.
【How to use Go Card?】
Touch on when boarding, touch off when alighting. Remember to tap both times, otherwise the full fare is charged. Note: For light rail, the card machine is on the platform, so tap before boarding.
【How to return the card?】
Return at airports, train stations, or light rail stations. Not all places have staffed counters; some use self-service machines.
Crossing the pedestrian street, we unexpectedly saw a light rail station at the intersection of Cavill Avenue.
And this station had a staffed counter – great, we bought Go Cards!
The platform also has self-service machines for purchase, return, and top-up.
With the transport card, we can go anywhere – yay!
This market is located by a marina at Main Beach, with pleasant scenery!
Like Sydney Fish Market, it sells fresh and cooked seafood. You choose ingredients, they process them, and there are tables outside.
Ordered the most popular fish and chips, which has won "Australia's Top Ten Fried Fish Rankings" multiple times – crispy fish, soft fries, a perfect match! Grilled fresh oysters with special sauce – delicious!
If we can't finish, a flock of seagulls is eagerly waiting – nothing wasted! Haha...
On the way back from the fish market, taking the bus, we suddenly saw a beach sunset through the window. "Oh my god, this is so beautiful!" We didn't know the place but got off immediately.
An ultra-beautiful pink beach, dreamy, like a Miyazaki anime world!
The best part: we had the whole place to ourselves! For someone obsessed with "no strangers in photos," it was pure joy!
On the way back from the station to the apartment, we stopped by the supermarket. Woolworths is a well-known Australian supermarket chain. We frequented it in Tasmania four years ago; seeing the familiar logo felt like meeting an old friend!
Filling the fridge felt great! Haha... when Dad's not around, little C is our strong worker!
Gold Coast at night is even more dazzling! Our apartment balcony was truly beautiful!
Morning, Gold Coast!
Today's blue sky, white clouds, and sea:
Yesterday was a rest day; today will be an energy-releasing day!
Besides beautiful beaches, Gold Coast has Australia's best theme parks. There are 6 theme parks in Gold Coast, belonging to Warner Bros. and Dreamworld groups. Discounted multi-park tickets are available online. For example, a four-park combo (Movie World + Sea World + Paradise Country + Wet'n'Wild) costs only 500 RMB (child 398) – cheaper than a single Shanghai Disney ticket, and with fewer crowds and no long queues.
Ticket prices mentioned below are on-site prices, which are much higher. Buying multi-park combos online in advance is cheaper: besides the four-park combo, a three-park combo is 450 RMB (child 390), two-park combo 300 RMB (child 260). Even single-park tickets are much cheaper than official on-site prices.
Also, Dreamworld, WhiteWater World, and Q1 Building are operated by the same company, so you can buy a combo ticket for these three places online, unlimited use within 7 days. Adult 292 RMB, child 257 RMB. Dreamworld + Q1 Observation Deck: adult 285 RMB (child 195). Various combos including Dreamworld koala photo are available.
So, no matter which theme parks you choose, be sure to book tickets online in advance; travel agency platforms are much cheaper than official sites.

During shearing, performers invite visitors to try shearing themselves.
Behind our apartment building was the Cavill Avenue light rail stop, called G-link. Unlike domestic light rail stations, it is like a bus stop, no barriers or security checks.
While waiting, little C was studying the bus routes seriously:
[Add photo description]
Here comes the train! Very Gold Coast style!
After boarding, Cici and I searched for a long time but couldn't find a card machine. We observed the next station's passengers and found the machine was on the platform, the yellow device on the left in the photo below. You tap off there too.
No staff checking – all on the honor system. The station where we transferred to TX7 was the G-link terminus, the only station we saw with staff. We approached them, explained we hadn't tapped on, and they helped resolve it.
Outside the light rail station, turning left was the bus stop. TX7 goes to both Warner Bros. Movie World and Dreamworld.
We unexpectedly found that turning right led to the Airtrain station, where we would transfer to the train to Brisbane a few days later. Unknowingly, we figured out the Brisbane route!
Wet'n'Wild and Movie World are close together; TX7 first arrives at Wet'n'Wild, half the people get off, then one more stop to Movie World. From boarding G-link to arriving at Movie World took about an hour.
As a super roller coaster fan (don't misunderstand, not me, only Cici), the main task at Movie World was to ride the 7 super thrilling roller coasters!
Right after entering, straight ahead is Superman Escape: only half a minute, but the fastest coaster, shooting up from 0 to 100 km/h in 2 seconds, giving you Superman speed.
First ride this intense? Let's go!
So thrilling! Cici lined up again; she said she wanted another ride!
The second ranked coaster – Arkham Asylum: a crazy twisting coaster with feet dangling, featuring wild spins and VR glasses, super exciting!
Rainbow cotton candy, a little girl's favorite!
Various roller coasters, screams and laughter everywhere!
Hollywood Stunt Driver Show (11:00 and 13:50) twice daily, not to be missed. It recreates movie car chase stunts with audience interaction.
At the amusement park, everyone is a happy child! Screams, laughter, seeing your favorite heroes!
Every afternoon at 15:30, the star parade with cartoon characters and superheroes is a must-see!
I feel this kind is more my style!
This mini Wonder Woman successfully caught the attention of the real Wonder Woman and all of us. So cute!
After the parade, we took photos with heroes, rode 6 super coasters, some even twice, but there was one most thrilling...
The tallest, fastest, longest, and most hardcore roller coaster in the Southern Hemisphere is right here – DC Rivals Hyper Coaster, listed in "World's Top 10 Most Thrilling Roller Coasters"! Height 61.6 meters, length 1.4 km – almost double the length of any other Gold Coast coaster, top speed 115 km/h, and the world's first non-inverting loop, absolutely unprecedented. From a distance, you can hear heart-wrenching screams!
This was the coaster Cici most wanted to challenge today. She was confident, but seeing the real thing made her hesitate. First she said "let's ride others and come back later," then "it's too high!" and wanted to give up. Indeed, just hearing the screams from below was scary. But half an hour before closing, when we were about to leave, she finally mustered the courage to try.
Oh my, my little C went alone!
Watching her walk alone toward the queue, I felt so proud of her at that moment!
Theme based on the superheroes and villains from Justice League. At the highest point stands the classic head of the Joker, Batman's arch-nemesis.
DC Rivals Hyper Coaster challenge successful! Little C said: "This is a real amusement park, a real roller coaster! Suddenly Disney's Tron and Happy Valley's Ghost Coaster feel like nothing!"
After posting on social media, many friends and family nicknamed little C "Hardcore Girl," and she seemed a bit smug, happily accepting it, haha...
That evening, to reward herself, we had mala xiang guo at Xiao Tian Fu across from the apartment!
Pretty reasonable price!
A super perfect day!
G-link
Another day full of energy!
At the entrance, there was a welcome ceremony!
Encountered Chinese element Kung Fu Panda Po – a pleasant surprise!
Dreamworld also has many rides: roller coasters, blenders, claws, pendulum swings, etc. Fewer visitors than Movie World, each ride wait under 10 minutes. So Cici rode many rides 2-3 times in a row.
A foreigner asked Cici, "Is this your first time? Are you scared?" I think he was a bit scared himself to ask, haha...
The roller coaster here is thrilling and fun!
From the roller coaster, you could see neighboring WhiteWater World.
Several restaurants in the park, so no worries about hunger.
First time having cola slush!
Dreamworld also has a famous roller coaster – the one holding the Guinness World Record for tallest and fastest in the Southern Hemisphere, the "Kongbu Tower" (Tower of Terror), also listed in "World's Top 10 Most Thrilling Roller Coasters": 360-degree inclined free fall, 15-story inverted flight, vertical descent at 65 mph on the southern hemisphere's highest inversion.
Vibrant colors, endless joy! In the amusement park, this old mother also rediscovered her childhood!
Southern Hemisphere's largest tiger enclosure – Tiger Island
Newborn tiger cubs, so cute!
This job would be envied by many!
Inside the park is a wildlife area with over 500 native Australian species: emus, bandicoots, Tasmanian devils, thylacines, crocodiles, dingoes – the largest wildlife park in Queensland. Of course, our favorite is the kangaroos.
The Koala Kingdom here is the largest koala habitat on the Gold Coast and second largest in the world. You can hold a koala for a photo; you can pre-book a combo with koala photo. Since we would go to Brisbane later, which has the world's largest koala sanctuary, we didn't hold koalas here.
Another long day! The sun was setting; time to go home!
Today's plan was originally to go to Paradise Country, as we had bought a combo ticket for Movie World and Paradise Country. But yesterday when checking the route, we found Paradise Country is 1.7 km from Movie World, no direct bus, 25-minute walk. And the main activities at the farm were similar to what we saw in New Zealand this winter vacation. So we decided to sleep in instead, hehe...
The afternoon sun has a lazy magic; suddenly we wanted afternoon tea!
Gold Coast's most famous and luxurious hotel is undoubtedly the Palazzo Versace, one of only two in the world, the other in Dubai. Actually, I'm indifferent to the brand; it's not my style, but since we were nearby and had nothing else to do, we decided on a whim to have afternoon tea and take a tour!
Entering the lobby, the exquisite mosaic logo on the floor,
Indeed, every design is thoughtful, every detail is Versace!
Suddenly noticed my outfit matched perfectly, haha...
Le Jardin restaurant on the ground floor offers English three-tier afternoon tea from 12:00 to 16:00, 290 RMB per person.
Nearby is a marina with shops and restaurants. Unfortunately, the weather was overcast; if sunny, dining by the sea would be wonderful.
Tonight was our last night on the Gold Coast, so we had to visit the iconic Q1 Building, the tallest residential tower in the Southern Hemisphere.
Q1 Building Observation Deck (SkyPoint)

At night, the sparkling lights create Gold Coast's unique vibrancy and charm!
There is a restaurant called Seventy7 Cafe & Bar. Enjoying dinner by the window with the dazzling night view is a rare and unforgettable experience!
Waking up to another beautiful day! Considering that some friends specifically came here during Chinese New Year but had rain every day and couldn't go anywhere, we felt so lucky!
Today no special plans; check out in the afternoon and head to Brisbane. Realized we hadn't used the apartment's beautiful pool yet!
It was a heated pool – fantastic!
It's so pleasant not having to rush打卡 spots!
We soaked in the pool until noon, then went out to find food.
The stunning coastline stretching over 40 km, towering skyscrapers, trendy shopping centers, convenient public transport, spring-like climate year-round, numerous theme parks, and property prices cheaper than Shanghai... Gold Coast is truly a livable city! Finally, a stroll along the beach to feel Gold Coast's charm!
Listening to the waves, feeling the sea breeze on my face, watching people playing happily on the beach – I could sit here all afternoon...
Besides the six theme parks, Gold Coast also has:
1. Lamington National Park and Springbrook National Park
These are places on the Gold Coast to see glowworms. The rare blue glowworms are only found in Australia and New Zealand. Springbrook is closer to the city, but due to high visitor numbers, glowworm numbers are decreasing. Lamington is deep in primeval forest (just 1 hour from the city center) with more glowworms, and it also has the exclusive KAMARUN viewing platform at 1000 meters altitude, offering views of the starry Milky Way. Lamington also has an alpaca farm.
Filming location for Korea's Running Man, the zoo has over 1400 species of Australian animals, a great place to connect with nature. You can feed kangaroos, hold cute koalas, and wander in an open zoo to experience authentic Australian wildlife. Rainbow lorikeets are a symbol of Currumbin; feeding hundreds of colorful lorikeets is a spectacular sight. Watch bird shows, amphibian shows, sheep shearing, and Aboriginal dance performances.
Since we would visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane, we skipped this zoo.
Eventually, we had to say goodbye!
Took the train to Brisbane!
Trains from Gold Coast to Brisbane (Airtrain) are very frequent; no advance ticket needed – just use Go Card. Journey about 1.5 hours.
Brisbane's train station features Victorian-era architecture!
Brisbane, the capital of Queensland and Australia's third-largest city. Brisbane is close to the Pacific Ocean, a city developed from the coastline and port. Its city center is along the Brisbane River.
Just like the Bund is to Shanghai, the first impression of Brisbane must start from its famous South Bank Parklands!
South Bank Parklands is located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, not far from the train station. It features a Ferris wheel, artificial beach, a ribbon-shaped waterfront park built along the river, connected to northern Brisbane via Victoria Bridge and others.
By the river, people sit on the grass reading and chatting, or cycling, jogging, walking dogs. Although Brisbane is Australia's third-largest city, it is far less bustling and noisy than Sydney or Melbourne; it's more relaxed and easygoing, a place suited for living, not agitating.
It was dusk, and the sunset gilded the river and riverside buildings with a dazzling gold, warm and striking!
Hardcore girl on the town! Haha...
Every city has its own flavor! Relaxed and trendy – that's Brisbane's charm!
Sitting by the river, boats crossing, people coming and going, yet everything brings a sense of peace and serenity.
Blue sky, gentle breeze, and you beside me...
Brisbane's city center surrounds Queen Street Mall. Cross the bridge from South Bank and you're there. Queen Street Mall is a vibrant pedestrian street often featuring bands or street performers. Queen Street Mall is Brisbane's shopping hub and a must-visit for tourists. It has over 600 shops, 45 cafes/restaurants, 2 cinemas, and 11... many world-class brands are available here.
In the middle of the mall is a row of restaurants; many locals stop for a drink. We joined in! In relaxed slow time, we savored the joy of things.
Seeing a familiar logo felt like meeting family – we rushed over! One drink down, full of energy for the day, easily walking 20,000 steps! Haha...
King George Square is near Queen Street Mall. Built in 1930, it has a 70-meter tower and is built with Queensland's characteristic yellowish-brown sandstone and timber. It is the largest and most magnificent of its kind, and was the most expensive building at the time of completion.
Across the road from City Hall is St John's Cathedral, Brisbane.
Afternoon sunlight filters through classical buildings, exuding a strong cultural atmosphere. This is a city for nostalgia and romance!
There are five bridges over the Brisbane River: George Sir Bridge, Elizabeth Bridge, Captain Cook Bridge, Story Bridge, and Airport Bridge. The most famous is Story Bridge.
This bridge is actually not named "Story." It was named after John Douglas Story, whose surname is "Story," so strictly speaking, it should be called "Story Bridge." It became famous because later Story designed another even more famous bridge.
Built on June 6, 1940, it is Australia's longest cantilever bridge, over 500 meters long and about 80 meters high. Listed as a Queensland heritage site in 1992. It is also the second bridge in Australia open for climbing; you can climb to the top for panoramic views.
Address: Main Street, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Getting there: Take train to Fortitude Valley, walk down Wickham Street, turn left onto Brunswick Street, walk about 200 meters to Martin Street, then go directly onto the bridge; or walk down Bowen Terrace to New Farm for a distant view; take CityCat or CityHopper, or get off at Eagle Street pier and walk along City Reach Boardwalk.
Tonight, Mr. Lu finally joined us! We had dinner at George's Paragon Seafood Restaurant Brisbane, ranked #1 in Brisbane.
The restaurant is right next to Eagle Street pier, so CityHopper is the most convenient.
They have a special dining policy: "Lunch Half Price, Dinner Half Price - seated between 5:30 & 6:30." That is, lunch is half price, and dinner is also half price if you are seated between 5:30 and 6:30. No reservations during this period; first come, first served. So dinner seats are very tight; arrive early.
Welcome Mr. Lu! Our tour group is finally complete! Haha...
No wonder it's the #1 restaurant – environment, service, food all excellent. But the "half price" only applies to certain dishes, not all.
The seafood ingredients are very fresh.
As night fell, through the restaurant's floor-to-ceiling windows, the beautiful harbor night view was fully visible, with the red Story Bridge exceptionally bright and stunning.
After eating and drinking, we strolled along the river to digest while heading to a secret photo spot I had kept for a long time! Hehe...
Everything in sight was sparkling like stars, as if we had stumbled into a fairy's garden.
No wonder I walked 1.7 km, almost 4 km round trip – it did not disappoint!
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Rated as one of the "World's Top Ten Zoos" by AOL, this is a must-visit in Brisbane. Because Queensland is one of two states where you can hold a koala (the other is South Australia), and this sanctuary is the world's largest koala nature reserve, housing over 130 koalas.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary was established in 1927, the first koala sanctuary in Australia. Its motto is "The Earth is not just for humans," reflecting Lone Pine's philosophy of harmony and understanding between humans, nature, and animals.
【How to get there】
Besides driving or taxi, there are two other ways:
1. Bus: Take buses 430 or 445 from Brisbane city center. Go Card accepted.
Lone Pine is about 13 km from Brisbane city center, about 40 minutes by car. Bus 445 departs from stop 40 Adelaide Street in the city center, direct to Lone Pine. Fare $4.60 AUD/person.
Bus 430 departs from Queen Street bus station B4 platform, direct to Lone Pine. Zoo is the terminal, fare $4.70 AUD/person, about 40 minutes. If staying on South Bank, you can board at Cultural Centre station.
TIPS: The 430 bus stop is in the basement of a shopping mall, completely invisible from the street, not even signposted (luckily we took 430 on the return and discovered this). Also, bus 430 runs once an hour; weekdays first bus 8:45 am, weekends first bus 8:30 am. Best to plan ahead.
2. Mirimar Boat Cruise: Departs every morning at 10:00 from Cultural Centre Pontoon, directly to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, about 75 minutes. The route along the river offers great scenery. Returns to Cultural Centre Pontoon at 15:00.
Boarding starts at 09:30. Outbound: 10:00-11:15, Return: 13:45-15:00. The Cultural Centre Pontoon is on South Bank, under the bridge.
We chose the plan of going by boat and returning by bus, so we could enjoy the boat sightseeing without being limited by the return time (too early if we returned by boat).
One-way boat ticket: $28 AUD/adult, child (3-13) $16 AUD. I booked in advance through an online platform for only 189 RMB for one adult and one child. Also, you can book round-trip boat tickets or a combo with zoo admission – much cheaper than on-site.
Zoo admission: Adult $36 AUD, children over 3 $22 AUD, family packages available. I booked online in advance for only 186 RMB for one adult and one child, saving 100 RMB compared to on-site.
【Opening hours】:

Another beautiful day – going by boat!
The beautiful Brisbane River runs through the city. Connected to South Bank Parklands is the Queensland Cultural Centre. The Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, Library, and Performing Arts Centre line up along the river, all modern and stylish.
This is the library; seats in front of floor-to-ceiling windows face the Brisbane River – such a wonderful place to read!
When tired from walking, any café looks lovely!
The riverbank also has a dedicated running track, which Mr. Lu greatly praised. He jogged there that morning and really enjoyed it!
In front of the library is the boarding pier:
We boarded the Mirimar river cruise boat, which has been in service for 70 years. It sailed steadily down the Brisbane River, passing the oldest attractions and landmarks. The captain also gave commentary on the history and stories of the buildings along the way.
As soon as we arrived at the zoo, the first thing was to queue for koala holding tickets! After all, that was the main purpose, and the number of people and time for holding koalas is limited daily. If you arrive late, tickets may be sold out.
【Koala Holding Guidelines】:
1. At the koala area, there are two lines: Orange A – you can hold the koala yourself for photos, $25 AUD per person; Blue B – staff hold the koala and take photos with you, cheaper (I was in line A, so I forgot the price of B). Don't queue in the wrong line. Previously, you could pre-book koala holding tickets online, but now that's canceled; you must queue on-site.
2. When holding the koala for photos, follow the staff's instructions: place both hands palms up, flat at waist level; the staff will place the koala on your hands, and it will naturally grasp you. You just need to hold it steady.
3. Staff will take your photo; about 10 minutes later, at the nearby shop, your printed photos will be ready. Photo cost is included in the $25.
4. Everyone knows koalas sleep a lot, so each koala "works" for a short time before being taken away to rest, replaced by another. Many friends have told me they went to zoos where koalas were sleeping, and they couldn't get photos. So go to a zoo with many koalas to avoid this situation.
When we arrived, the queue was already long. Fortunately, the queue was within the koala area, so we could see koalas while waiting.
They are so cute! I have no resistance to these creatures!
After waiting over an hour, it was finally our turn!
Finally held you – so happy!
A little heavy! Hehe...
After the main task, we went to see another old friend – the kangaroos!
The kangaroo area here is very large, with many kangaroos, and no fences – you can interact closely with them, fantastic!
At the entrance to the kangaroo area, you can buy food for $2 AUD per bag to feed them.
Australian kangaroos are not afraid of people at all. We encountered wild kangaroos in Tasmania a few years ago, and they weren't very shy, let alone those in the zoo.
And they are very photogenic!
We met a mother kangaroo and her joey:
Little naughty one came out to play!
We played happily with the kangaroos, feeding them all, forgetting to have lunch ourselves!
The Koala Forest restaurant was fantastic! Dining there, surrounded by koalas sleeping and munching eucalyptus leaves in the trees.
Lunch with the koalas!
There's also a Koala Museum to help us learn more about koalas.
There were many other animals in the zoo. After spending a whole day, we didn't want to go home! Haha... Glad we didn't buy round-trip boat tickets; otherwise, time wouldn't have been enough.
Returning to the city center, we met Brisbane's sunset again!
I believe a city's nightlife represents its vitality to some extent.
The more night, the more beautiful!
About 30 kilometers offshore from Brisbane lies the world's third-largest sand island – Moreton Island. Moreton Island is known worldwide for the large number of wild dolphins that live in its waters, hence also called "Dolphin Island."
In the 1950s, this island was Australia's largest whaling station. Many whales were slaughtered during their migration to the Great Barrier Reef. Later, they found that whale-watching tourism earned more money than whaling, so there was no need to continue killing whales.
Tangalooma Island Resort is the only hotel on the island. If you stay here, you can experience hand-feeding the island's most spiritual guests – dolphins – for free, and they are wild dolphins!
Tour companies also offer day trips from Brisbane to Moreton Island for dolphin feeding, costing around 1,000 RMB per person, roughly the same as a night's room rate. But if you stay at the resort, dolphin feeding is free – much better value!
As soon as the boat docked, we were greeted not only by friendly hotel staff but also by a group of little cuties!
Dolphin feeding starts at 6 PM every evening. First, go to the Dolphin Care Centre opposite the pier to register, providing your room number. First come, first served, so register immediately after arriving; otherwise, you might miss the chance.
The resort has complete facilities: restaurants, supermarket, cafe, pool... everything, even a police station.
Our sea-view room:
Even better, there are loads of activities. The brochure was a thick 14 pages – we were so excited!
The sun shines freely, waves gently lap the fine sand, and every corner of the resort exudes enthusiasm and vitality!
There are many activities on the island. Some are free (tennis, basketball, table tennis, archery, beach volleyball), but most require payment and advance booking, and they aren't cheap.
As the world's third-largest sand island, Moreton Island has many sand-related activities.
So naturally, we chose the most characteristic ones. We booked an afternoon ATV quad bike ride and next afternoon's sandboarding – we had never tried either before.
Before departure, the instructor teaches you how to operate. Then you practice on flat beach areas under guidance. Overall, it's simple and safe. But for women and children, the handlebars are a bit heavy, making turns strenuous, especially needing to control speed; otherwise, you may tip over or miss a turn and hit the side.
How cool? Haha...
First time driving an ATV, we drove 8 km straight, through narrow, winding mountain paths with several steep, uneven hairpin turns – more difficult than the driving test!
Cici showed great driving talent – not only did she not tip over (one mom in our group tipped), but she also maintained good speed, keeping up with the group without falling behind. The instructor praised her repeatedly! I firmly believe she inherited my genes, haha...
Back in the room, we sat on the balcony waiting for the most beautiful moment of the day!
There are several specialty restaurants on the island. The Fire & Stone Restaurant is said to be opened by the owner of [the famous Chinese restaurant chain?] – the Sichuan food is authentic, surpassing most local Australian Sichuan restaurants, but the prices are steep. Boiled fish (shui zhu yu) was 56 AUD (about 270 RMB), Kung Pao chicken 36 AUD, even a plate of hot and sour shredded potatoes 22 AUD, breaking our previous record for the most expensive Chinese meal (in London)!
As darkness fell, the lights on the pier lit up. The activity we had most looked forward to was about to begin.
Every day at this time, these little guests swim to the resort's beach, year after year, never failing.
The whole process must follow the staff's instructions: line up orderly. First, soak your hands in disinfectant water, then receive a small fish. The resort feeds them common Moreton Bay herring. Dolphins prefer herring because it's high in fat and has few bones, easy to digest.
To prevent the wild dolphin family from depending on this artificial feeding, the amount of food is controlled. The feeding only lasts 1 hour, and the daily food provided is only 10%-20% of the dolphins' daily intake. This means the dolphins must still catch fish themselves to maintain their wild survival skills.
Unfortunately, tonight the sea was rough. For safety, visitors could only stand on the jetty and throw the fish to the dolphins in the sea.
At that moment, we were glad we would stay two nights at the resort, so we still had another chance tomorrow!
Morning, Moreton Island! Woken up every day by the bright sunshine!
As the world's third-largest sand island, Moreton Island is famous for sandboarding.
The dunes are said to be the highest in the world. When you slide down from a 200-foot dune, you feel the thrill of "surfing" the sand!
Sandboarding on Moreton Island: the dunes are very steep, reaching speeds up to 40 km/h – very exciting and fun!
And it also exfoliates your facial skin, hehe...
Back at the resort to recharge!
With food and fun, it's truly a holiday paradise. I strongly recommend staying at least two nights!
Came with joy, left with memories!
Holding stars in our hands, may all good things come as promised!
In the evening, we went to the Chinese restaurant again. Expensive, but delicious! Although burgers and fries are cheaper, eating them two meals in a row (we had Western light meals at a nearby fast-food place for lunch, which was cheaper) – I couldn't handle it!
Lady Luck favored us again – today was calm, so we could finally get close to the dolphins!
Night temperature was around 10°C, quite cold, and barefoot in the seawater was even colder. But at that moment, our excitement completely overshadowed the cold.
They came – they really came...
The staff handed each of us a small fish, instructing us to gently hold the fish by the tail, making sure our thumb was flat and not extending beyond the head. Then they led Cici and me toward the dolphins...
Although the photos were blurry, the experience mattered more. This rare encounter still excites us to this day!
The dolphins were so cute!
These photos were taken by the staff, naturally at a cost. The two dolphins we fed were named Luna and Cruze.
The joy travel brings: seeing stunning scenery, encountering touching stories, and those irreplaceable moments!
Wonderful experience, wonderful nature! Animals should live in their own homes!
Humans can be cruel – many animals are separated from their mothers soon after birth and trained to become tools for human profit. So after Cici started primary school (I wasn't very conscious before), I stopped taking her to aquariums and ocean parks, and we haven't watched circuses. That's why we didn't visit Sea World on the Gold Coast. But I will take her to wild places and national parks in Sri Lanka, Australia, the US, etc., to see various wildlife, go out to sea to see wild whales and dolphins – animals should live in their own homes!
Fresh morning, we took the first ferry back to Brisbane. The little cuties who greeted us two days ago were still there to see us off today!
