Dragon Boat Festival Road Trip: How to Choose the Right RV for Yourself?
Juwei RV — For a Wonderful Life
The RV industry is a sunrise industry in China, currently booming. However, many car enthusiasts, lacking knowledge about RVs, struggle to make a comprehensive decision when purchasing one. Today, Xiaowei shares a guide on how to select an RV, hoping it helps.
Determine Your Needs — Don’t buy just for occasional use
Buying an RV is a significant expense. In recent years, many brands have seen customers who impulsively purchase an RV, use it only a few times, drive it only a few kilometers, and then resell it. So before buying an RV, first clarify your usage needs.
Choose Your Model — Which model suits you?
RVs are divided into Type A, Type B, and Type C. For home use, it is recommended to choose Type B or Type C within 6 meters in length. According to national regulations, RVs under 6 meters can be driven with a blue license plate and a C-class driver’s license.
What is the difference between Type B and Type C?
The most obvious difference is the appearance. A Type B RV retains the original vehicle body with no external modifications, while a Type C RV has significant exterior changes, most notably a larger front overhang ("big forehead").
Xiaowei feels that Type C RVs are more suitable for long-distance family trips, while Type B RVs are ideal for camping and short trips around the city. Of course, both Type B and Type C can meet basic travel needs—it depends on your choice.
How to Choose the RV Chassis — The chassis is a crucial component
When buying an RV, start with the chassis. The chassis determines the vehicle's power, driving stability, safety, and handling. Regarding power, check whether the engine technology is advanced. Some RV manufacturers use lower-end chassis with outdated engines, resulting in much lower output power. For example, two identical models with 2.4L engines may have output powers of only 78 kW and over 110 kW—the more advanced technology naturally yields higher power. In terms of safety, features like ABS and EBD are important. Also, check if the chassis is specifically designed for RVs. A simple way to judge is to compare numbers: compare wheelbase length (longer is better) and front/rear track width (wider is better, as it improves stability).
RV Interior — Comfort is key for the "home" part
Evaluate the convenience of living facilities and the completeness of configurations. For example, whether the RV comes with a standard driving air conditioner and parking air conditioner, an integrated flush toilet, and whether the bathroom allows showering. It is best to separate functional areas naturally, such as keeping the sleeping area relatively independent from the entertainment area, so that those relaxing and those sleeping do not disturb each other.
Compare Prices — Evaluate cost-effectiveness
When comparing several similar RVs, look at the chassis configuration (which can differ by tens of thousands of yuan). Some RVs have lower interior configurations, missing features like driving air conditioners or integrated flush toilets. While the initial price may be lower, the performance is also significantly reduced. Adding these features after purchase is costly, time-consuming, and may not work as well as the original equipment.
After-Sales Service — Often determines your RV experience
Finally, a reminder: A brand with high credibility and a wide network of after-sales service and maintenance stations makes a noticeable difference during use. Even if you encounter a breakdown while traveling, it will be convenient to get repairs. Some car owners have had their RVs break down on the road and waited days for service. A simple way to judge is to check whether the manufacturer has a comprehensive after-sales service system, whether there are many 4S dealerships for the chassis, and whether there are enough service stations.
