Roaming the World (1573) Dalian Botanical Garden

Spring came early in 2022. One day in mid-April, I went for a spring outing to the nearby Dalian Botanical Garden. The picture shows the landmark stone of Dalian Botanical Garden.

Dalian Botanical Garden was first established in 1920, originally named "Nanshanlu Park". The picture shows Dalian Botanical Garden and the nearby Nanshan Mountain.

In 1930, it was renamed "Yayoi-ga-ike Park". After liberation, "Yayoi-ga-ike" was renamed "Yingsong Lake". The picture shows Yingsong Lake in Dalian Botanical Garden.

As a key municipal livelihood project in 2017, the comprehensive renovation of Dalian Botanical Garden was completed after more than a year of meticulous work, giving the garden a completely new look.

During the renovation, over 4,000 cubic meters of sludge were removed from the lake bottom, the lake was deepened to 6 meters, and 1,400 square meters of new water area were added, improving the water storage capacity of Yingsong Lake. The picture shows the rippling Yingsong Lake.

In the rippling Yingsong Lake, there were many goldfish.

The renovation included 550 meters of revetment, adding viewing platforms on the bank walls, installing iron railings, laying anti-corrosion wooden flooring, and building a wooden curved bridge over the water, creating a winding, elegant, and beautiful lakeside leisure sightseeing boardwalk and corridor system.

The original lake center bridge of Yingsong Lake was a shaky wooden suspension bridge. Every time I walked on it, I felt a bit worried. Now it has been rebuilt into a stone arch bridge, which perfectly echoes the ancient pavilion at the other end of the bridge, adding an ancient charm.

A 37-meter-long, beautifully designed three-arched Chinese-style bridge harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, becoming a new landmark of the botanical garden.

After the renovation, many steep slope drainage ditches were built, connected to the improved drainage channels through underground culverts, forming three new artificial water systems.

After the renovation, the steep slopes in the forest were stabilized using wood and stone with soil-fixing and greening techniques, creating terraced fields to solve soil erosion problems.

After the renovation, at the junction of the largest artificial water system on the south bank of the lake and the lake area, a new red solid-wood railing arch bridge was built, improving the garden paths and adding a new landscape to the botanical garden.

After the renovation, water pumps were installed in the water system to create a scene of small bridges and flowing water, adding dynamic rhythm to the landscape water system.

After the renovation, nearly a hundred new varieties of trees and shrubs were introduced and planted, and specialized plant gardens such as a bamboo garden and a landscape garden in the style of Jiangnan gardens were built, enriching the plant population.

After the renovation, the concept of "sponge city" was implemented. The forest paths and leisure square surfaces were paved with volcanic ash rock to increase ground permeability.

After the renovation, over 1,000 meters of plastic track around the lake and more than 500 meters of new leisure and fitness paths were built.

After the renovation, new fitness activity areas were set up, and two new public toilets were built to enhance the comfort of citizens for leisure and sightseeing.

The newly established children's activity area attracts many children every day.

After the renovation, five sightseeing trails and mountain climbing paths were laid out in the garden. One of the climbing paths extends to the top of the mountain opposite Wuwu Road.

Dalian Botanical Garden covers an area of 324,000 square meters, with ornamental plant areas, landscape garden areas, and water scenic areas, featuring more than 200 plant species. It is a professional park that combines science education, sightseeing, and leisure. During the holidays, the botanical garden welcomes many visitors for spring outings every day.
