Location: Fuding City, Fujian Province

Transportation: There are two docks where you can take a boat to Yushan Island. For those north of Fuding, it is recommended to go to Yujing Dock; for those south of Fuding, go to Sansha Dock. The boat ticket from Yujing is 100 yuan round trip. Children under 1.4 meters get half-price tickets, and children under 1 meter (as far as I remember) are free. The journey takes about half an hour.

During peak tourist season, there may be additional boat schedules. It is recommended to consult the dock, scenic area, or me before departure. It is worth mentioning that the scenery at Yujing Dock by the sea is also good, so you can arrive a bit early and spend an hour or so idling among the seaside rocks and gentle waves. Be sure to arrive early, as the boat departs when full. If you arrive right on time, you may not get on board, and you may not get a good seat. The crew on board are quite warm and will help passengers board; safety is well taken care of.

Island Transportation: There are dedicated shuttle buses to Tianhu Lake; private cars are not allowed. The rest is the island loop bus, which runs once an hour, which is relatively inconvenient. Alternatively, you can hire a private car.

Accommodation: There are no particularly high-end folk inns or hotels on the island, mostly family-run guesthouses. One slightly nicer recommendation is the wooden cabins and small boat cabins near Moon Bay, which are convenient as they are right by the beach. Another is the Nanfeng Lake Villa inside the Tianhu Lake Scenic Area where we stayed this time. It is a relatively good guesthouse on a hilltop with a direct view of the sea, and you can watch the sunrise right after waking up. There is also the Constellation Hotel promoted on the island, but I don't know much about it. Of course, there are many other family guesthouses that are also nice, waiting for you to discover. Some guesthouses offer pick-up and drop-off services and can arrange transportation for guests.

Staying near the dock is the most convenient, as it is the starting point whether you go to Tianhu Lake or the beach loop.

Another accommodation option is camping. Several core camping spots like Moon Bay have tents for rent. Of course, if you are a backpacker, you can bring your own and choose your own camping spot.

Tickets: Scenic area ticket is 76 yuan, half-price ticket is 56 yuan, including transportation to and from Tianhu Lake.

Route: Yushan Island is mainly divided into two parts: the Tianhu Lake scenic area in the mountains, and the beaches and fishing villages by the sea. It is recommended to spend two days.

The beauty of Tianhu Lake goes without saying; it is a rare sight, suitable for hiking and camping. However, the Tianhu Lake scenic area now explicitly prohibits camping. But for backpackers, you know, no one can limit our freedom. Additionally, after 5 PM, the duty staff at the entrance near Zao'ao Village go off work. If you plan to backpack in and camp, you can save on the ticket.

The most beautiful part of the Tianhu Lake scenic area is Little Tianhu Lake, which has a very pure hiking route, not suitable for casual tourists.

Picture 1 below shows that after climbing the southern hill of Little Tianhu Lake, you can overlook the sea here, with the sea on the left and the lake on the right.

Picture 3 below is looking back at the path after coming down from the mountaintop, all grasslands, very atmospheric.

For tourists going to Tianhu Lake, walking along the built visitor trails will generally give you a good experience of the lake scenery. You can also try strolling through the meadows to reach the lakeside.

For those who want to hike and camp in depth, you can spend a full day walking all the routes around Tianhu Lake.

Besides seeing the sea, the lake, and the grass, Tianhu Lake also has its roads. If possible, bring a bicycle or rent an electric scooter from the innkeeper (secretly, the owner of Nanfeng Lake Villa has one) and ride around the mountain paths or the island ring road. It is definitely an experience that ordinary people rarely have.

Apart from the uniqueness of Tianhu Lake, the island has its own coastal scenery—beaches, fishing villages, sea excursions, etc. Therefore, the island loop route is also a must. The best way to circumnavigate the island is by bicycle, which is the most free, flexible, and thorough way. Next time I go, I will try that.

Of course, you can also try hiring a car, but hiring a car is always point-to-point, and the route never truly connects. Or simply choose a beach and sit there well.

Finally, I must mention camping and watching sunrises and sunsets, which is another way to intimately merge with nature. There are many camping spots on the island, some designated and some not allowed. Also, you can choose your own, in a valley, by the sea, as you wish.

Whether you can see the sunrise and sunset is entirely a matter of luck. What you can do in advance is choose a good spot and wait quietly. For the right spot, you can look up online recommendations. If you want to enjoy a sky all to yourself, then scout the spot yourself. Note that in summer, the sun rises from east-northeast and sets in east-northeast; in winter, it rises from southeast and sets in southeast. Make sure there are no obstructions in the corresponding direction.
