2019 was an unsettled year for Hong Kong. My best friend who works in Guangzhou and I got three doses of HPV vaccine from May to November. Those six months coincided with the most turbulent period in Hong Kong. Fortunately, Guangzhou is close to Hong Kong, so our trip was not affected.

We successfully completed all three doses at Hong Kong AXA Clinic near Sheung Shui MTR station, and the medical staff treated us very well.

Both my best friend and I are nearly 30 years old, so we are no longer eligible for the 9-valent vaccine in mainland China. Luckily, my best friend works in a gynecology hospital and has seen many patients with gynecological diseases. She emphasized the importance of cervical cancer prevention early on. In China, cervical cancer still ranks fifth among female cancers. You have to take care of your own health, especially with so many gynecological issues—don't shortchange yourself.

Many friends have asked me about the precautions and route for getting the 9-valent HPV vaccine in Hong Kong. Here I am sharing with you!

We started from Guangzhou. Since Hong Kong AXA Clinic is near Sheung Shui station, crossing at Lo Wu Port in Shenzhen is the most convenient. So we took the high-speed train to Shenzhen, passed through Lo Wu Port, and it's just one stop to Sheung Shui station. If you plan to go, choose the route that works best for you.

Get off at Sheung Shui station, exit A4, follow the signs to Landmark North, take the elevator to the 10th floor, and you'll find it.

The front desk nurses were very friendly and spoke Mandarin, so no worries there.

Since we arrived early, there was no queue. After paying, the nurse had us fill out a vaccination card, and we reviewed the precautions to confirm everything was fine. Before the injection, they put an ice pack on our arms—the nurse said it would help reduce the soreness. They really care about the patients, haha.

Then they opened the box to show us the production date and batch number. After confirming it was okay, they gave the shot. To be honest, I was quite scared before the first dose—I really hate needles. But the nurse was very gentle, and I didn't feel pain, just a bit of numbness and coolness.

After the injection, the medical staff asked us to observe for half an hour before leaving. They gave each of us a vaccination card, and we just had to return to Hong Kong according to the schedule for the next doses.

After getting the shot, since Hong Kong was a bit chaotic at the time, we just wandered around Landmark North. There was a Loushang store there, so we bought some supplements and skincare products before heading back. I have to say, shopping in Hong Kong is really satisfying—it's easy to spend too much and end up broke.

Regarding questions about the 9-valent HPV vaccine in Hong Kong, here is what I know for your reference:

Why can people as young as 9 get the 9-valent HPV vaccine in Hong Kong? And there is no upper age limit?

For the 9-valent vaccine, sexual experience is more important than age. People who have never had sex will get better prevention and the best value. Looking at it from a sexual activity perspective, the recommended age for the cervical cancer vaccine is not set in stone. Even if you are over 26 but have never had sex, it is still recommended to get the HPV vaccine. Since ages 22-28 are the peak for sexual activity, the risk of HPV infection is high. So for those who have had sex, even over 26, if tests confirm no HPV infection, vaccination is still recommended.

Do you need to avoid menstruation when getting the vaccine? Can you get pregnant during the vaccination period? If you miss a dose and get infected with HPV, will it affect pregnancy?

You can get the vaccine during your period. The nurse asks about your period to confirm you are not pregnant, as pregnancy is not suitable for vaccination. Ladies trying to conceive should also be careful: it is not appropriate to get pregnant during the vaccination period. It's best to use contraception during the shots. Doctors recommend waiting three months after finishing the vaccine to try for a baby. HPV infections that do not cause lesions will not affect fertility, fetal development, or natural delivery. So if you are already pregnant, just have a smooth delivery and get the vaccine later.

Alright, that's about it. This is our guide to getting the HPV vaccine in Hong Kong. Hope it helps everyone~~
