I had previously obtained a Hong Kong and Macau Exit Permit. All I needed to do was go to the nearest Exit and Entry Administration Bureau near my registered residence, use the self-service machine, pay 20 RMB for the endorsement, and wait about an hour on a non-weekend day—it was done! Very convenient!

For those on a budget, I personally recommend Spring Airlines for the cheapest flights from Shanghai to Hong Kong/Macau. The downside is that free checked baggage is limited to 15 kg and there’s no meal service. China Eastern and Dragonair have daily round-trip flights with good service and decent meals. You can easily check them on Ctrip.

As for hotels, if it’s not peak season, you can usually book a room for around 500 RMB at a Hanting or Home Inn level (super mini size, of course). For 700–800 RMB, you might get a room with a window. Better locations like Tsim Sha Tsui have no upper limit—it all depends on your budget!

Make sure you have at least 200 RMB in your phone account, and activate China Mobile’s Hong Kong/Macau roaming service to receive texts and important calls. Don’t forget to disable GPRS.

In the age of smartphones, how can we survive without internet? Google Maps, WeChat, and Weibo are essential! (Since I needed to do personal shopping, I had to stay in touch with friends in Shanghai via WeChat, including sending photos.)

I bought a 3G ONE2FREE SIM card on Taobao in advance, which came with 100 HKD credit. I activated it as required and used the 7-day unlimited data plan for 78 HKD. 3G is really fast!

For shopping, I mainly used credit cards. I also exchanged three 1000 HKD notes for food and drinks—about 2400 RMB.

Hola! I am a Hong Kong shopping enthusiast.

Based in Shenzhen, I frequently travel to Hong Kong. I love life and shopping.

Feel free to ask me about any Hong Kong shopping information.

I can help with direct mail orders of various skincare and cosmetic products from Hong Kong to mainland China, including customs duties!

Travel Journal Directory 1. This trip’s itinerary was quite casual—I went wherever the mood took me. There were no must-see tourist spots or must-try popular foods. It was purely a food-and-drink trip to experience Hong Kong culture, plus a long list of personal shopping requests!
