Many people first get to know Hong Kong through Yau Tsim Mong. In those years, popular Cantonese songs and TV dramas often made us dream of traveling, shopping, or even living in Hong Kong. With this guide, let's explore Hong Kong in depth and awaken the love in our hearts.
Yau Tsim Mong is one of Hong Kong's historic and diverse areas, featuring hotels, department stores, and countless street-side snacks. The retro neon signs are a true Hong Kong characteristic. "Argyle Street" is named after the 19th-century merchant ship 'SS Argyle'. It is a shopping paradise for tourists, offering everything from electronics and cosmetics to household appliances. On weekends and public holidays, the street is pedestrian-only. Walking along Argyle Street, you'll reach "Goldfish Street," a street less than 300 meters long with over 40 goldfish shops. This is also one of the filming locations for 'Chungking Express'. Standing at the goldfish shop doorway and bending down to look at the fish, you can almost recreate Faye Wong's classic scene.
"Tai Wo Tong Herbal Tea Shop" serves not only herbal tea but also sweet soups. For those with heavy dampness, try the special detoxifying and dampness-removing tea—best enjoyed warm. Follow it with a bowl of papaya stewed with snow fungus to soothe your throat. The snow fungus, stewed until it develops a gelatinous texture, paired with the sweetness of papaya, is incredibly satisfying. They also offer mango series, pudding series, sago series, and more.
"Langham Place," a favorite among trendy youngsters, gathers luxury brands, gourmet food, souvenirs, variety stores, and a supermarket. During Christmas, brands like Armani, Bobbi Brown, Coach, Clarins, Elizabeth Arden, Ipsa, and Helena Rubinstein launch multiple holiday gift sets, promotional sets, and cash discounts (many sets starting at 42% off).
Near Langham Place, exit E1 of Mong Kok Station, you'll find "Hong Kong Royal Patisserie," endorsed by Louis Koo, perfect for buying Hong Kong specialties to take home. With Christmas approaching, the festive atmosphere is strong, and brands big and small are launching Christmas gift boxes. Royal Patisserie is no exception. This year, they've introduced a new Christmas series: a festive gift box featuring the popular Michelin butterfly pastries, crispy cookies, honeycomb egg rolls, and Christmas green tea cookies. The green tea cookies are baked at low temperature with top-grade green tea and natural butter, preserving the rich aroma of green tea. They also have an early bird discount in November: the Christmas Premium Selection Gift Box, originally HK$398, is now HK$298. I bought two big bags and couldn't finish them all—truly the top choice for Hong Kong souvenirs!
If you've watched Hong Kong TV dramas like 'The Academy', 'The Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion', 'Infernal Affairs', 'EU Overrun Time', or 'Armed Reaction', you'll surely recognize the "Yaumatei Police Station." Its gray-blue color scheme makes it very artistic and Hong Kong-style when you capture the station's logo. The "Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC)" is about a 300-meter walk away, so you can visit both in one trip.
For authentic Hong Kong flavors, head to "Temple Street." Temple Street is divided into northern and southern sections, with a Tin Hau Temple in the middle, from which the street gets its name. It stretches through Yaumatei and Jordan. Temple Street is famous for selling affordable goods, and it also sells men's items, earning it the nickname "Men's Street." Films like Stephen Chow's 'The God of Cookery', Anita Yuen's 'C'est la vie, mon chéri', and Ekin Cheng's 'Temple Street Story' were all shot here. Besides bargain items, there are plenty of budget-friendly eats: various desserts, dai pai dongs, congee, noodles, rice dishes, and street snacks—you can't go wrong choosing any spot.
"Canton Road" is Hong Kong's most famous luxury street. Walking along, you'll see LV, Dior, Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Bvlgari, and more, all requiring queues to enter. Their storefront windows are exquisitely designed, attracting trendy youngsters to shop and take photos.
The art-themed shopping mall "K11 MUSEA" was designed by over 100 artists and designers from around the world. Overlooking Victoria Harbour and adjacent to the Avenue of Stars, with direct access to the Rosewood Hong Kong hotel, it boasts an excellent location. It houses an indoor children's play center, luxury cosmetics, various wine and art cake brands, and art sculpture exhibitions.
