Bookmark This! Must-Try Hong Kong Style Cha Chaan Teng and Souvenirs
The May Day mini-break is almost here again. Friends planning a trip to Hong Kong can bookmark this post! When you go to Hong Kong, you definitely need to try the authentic Hong Kong-style cha chaan teng. The most representative dishes at cha chaan teng include wonton noodles, beef brisket noodles, and pig trotter noodles! If you ask me what Hong Kong souvenirs to buy, it has to be Wang's (皇玥) butterfly pastries and Tai Tung (大同老饼家) wife cakes. Today, I've compiled the store addresses for you, so you can have fun, eat well, and shop with peace of mind!
Hong Kong Food Section:
「Mak's Wonton Noodles Family」has branches in popular areas like Tsim Sha Tsui and Central. This time we visited the Jordan branch, next to Mak Man Kee and Australia Dairy Company. Mak's broth is delicious, and the wonton noodles use egg noodles, which are surprisingly springy and smooth. The wontons are fresh shrimp wontons, each as big as a baby's fist! We also ordered a serving of pig trotters; they were soft, tender, and melted in your mouth, full of collagen!
Address: G/F, 55 Parkes Street, Jordan
「Man Kee Cart Noodles」Every time I go to Man Kee, it's packed, showing its unshakable status in Hong Kong's cart noodle scene. They even have three shops on Fuk Wing Street! The cart noodle options are abundant: 58 toppings + 14 types of noodles + 4 broths to choose from. I chose pig large intestine, pig trotters, pig blood curd, and radish, with oil noodles and brisket broth. The pig trotters were braised until very tender and flavorful; the large intestine was a big piece, with some fat left on, cooked soft with just the right texture. The overall taste was slightly sweet, but it was amazing with chili sauce! Their chili sauce is really outstanding!
Address: 121 Fuk Wing Street, Sham Shui Po
Packed some 「Vission Bakery」pastries to eat on the high-speed train, and they pleasantly surprised me—each one is huge! I did my homework before coming; I specifically came for the Matcha Mochi Danish! The molten matcha mochi filling, with the slightly bitter matcha paired with sweet mochi, is a favorite for matcha and mochi lovers. Matcha fans, go for it! The Pistachio Cruffin is also recommended; the filling is pistachio paste and cranberry jam, with a layer of icing sugar on the outer pastry—a paradise for dessert lovers!
Address: 5 Dundas Street, Central and Western District
Hong Kong Souvenir Section:
If you want to buy local Hong Kong specialties, I recommend the local Hong Kong brand「Wang's」(皇玥), which has branches in popular tourist spots like Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui. Their signature butterfly pastries and crispy cookies are really delicious. The butterfly pastries have a thousand-layer puff pastry texture, and they offer free samples. There are many flavors to choose from, including original, Earl Grey, sesame, seaweed, and more. Their crispy cookies are also different from ordinary ones; the pistachio flavor is made with generous nuts, and you can see individual pistachios on the surface. Also, their entire packaging line is elegant and generous!
Address: G/F, 40 Lee Garden Road, Causeway Bay (Causeway Bay Exit F), and G/F, Shun Shing Building, 77 Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui (Tsim Sha Tsui Exit E)
「Yiu Fung」Their signature preserved plum king costs 100 HKD per tael (about 38 grams), roughly 4 pieces. It might be the most expensive preserved plum ever! On average, each plum costs about 20 HKD. Besides the plum king, Yiu Fung also has hundreds of other affordable dried fruit snacks: olives, preserved plum ginger, aged winter ginger, lemon, etc., which are also famous. Around Lunar New Year, it becomes a hotspot for Hong Kongers to stock up on New Year goods. After all, it's a long-established brand with a reliable reputation and quality.
Address: UG03, 11 Hoi Fai Road, Tai Kok Tsui, Hong Kong
「Tai Tung Bakery」(大同老饼家) is a timeless bakery. Their wife cakes and traditional classic mooncakes have become local representative delicacies, attracting many gourmets. The wife cakes are very crispy with delicate filling, while the traditional mooncakes are especially popular during Mid-Autumn Festival, featuring classic fillings like lotus seed paste and salted egg yolk—a childhood memory for many.
Address: 57 Fu Choi Street, Yuen Long
If you want to buy unique Hong Kong souvenirs, of course you come to「Petite Petite」! They have passport holders, card holders, wallets, keychains, canvas bags, ornaments, and more. I saw many people buying leather keychains; when I asked the staff, I learned they are bestsellers—not only good quality but also cute designs. A genuine leather wallet here costs over 160 HKD in Hong Kong, but the leather is not fake-smooth, has no loose threads, is lightweight, and feels great to hold!
Address: 18 Aberdeen Street, Central
「Laduree」macaron specialty store. Their scented candles come in options like rose, marshmallow, strawberry, caramel, etc. Macaron flavors occasionally include seasonal or new varieties. When buying, you can ask the staff for recommendations and pick your favorite flavors to box, available in sets of 6, 8, or 12.
Address: 3/F, The Gateway, Canton Road
