Governors Island has a long history. Since its development in 1624, it has served as a fortification, military base, and U.S. Coast Guard station. Between June and October 2003, the island offered its first guided tours for visitors. In 2005, the island officially opened to the public, welcoming a steady stream of tourists. Now, Governors Island is open from May to October, making it a famous seasonal tourist destination in New York.

Castle Williams: This red sandstone circular defensive fortification at the western end of the island was built between 1807 and 1811 and is considered a prototype for new coastal defenses. It was used as a prison from 1861 to 1965, and its architectural features are well worth seeing.

Fort Jay: One of the classic examples of star-shaped fort designs, featuring a dry moat, hidden magazines, demi-lunes and bastions, barracks porches, various exhibits, and the oldest building on the island.
