Around Shenzhen | Soaking in Hot Springs in Heyuan for a Relaxing Holiday
For a winter holiday, soaking in hot springs is naturally the top choice. On a friend's recommendation, I decided to go to Heyuan Hakka World to relax.
The Hakka World scenic area is a bit far from downtown Heyuan. After getting off the train, it took over half an hour by taxi to get there. The hotel was located deep inside Hakka World and was hard to find. Later I learned that it was a private villa, no wonder the service staff at the entrance gave us wrong directions.
The room was clean and tidy. On the third floor, there was an outdoor soaking pool. They said the water was from a hot spring source, then reheated by a water heater. I soaked the first evening, and with the cool breeze, it felt really nice. This accommodation offered great value for money, and I was very satisfied.
Rating: ★★★★
Hotel: Heyuan Longyuan Hot Spring Villa
Location: 1 Hakka World Avenue, Gaopugang (within Heyuan Hakka World Scenic Area)
If you book an official hotel, you can enjoy free hot spring access, including the Crystal Hot Spring International Hotel, Village Inn, and Xingfuli Villa. For private villas like the one we stayed in, you cannot use the public facilities within the scenic area and need to purchase separate hot spring tickets, about over 100 yuan per person per visit.
After checking in, the receptionist told us she could lead us to the hot springs at a discounted price of 80 yuan. Later, after comparing, we chose Guoyao Health Hall and booked a private room for 288 yuan, which came with health tea and eggs.
To catch the train conveniently, we went to Heyuan city in advance and stayed one night. During the day, we visited Wanlv Lake, and in the evening, we watched Asia's tallest fountain.
I reckon the scenery at Wanlv Lake would be better in spring and summer. In winter, the reservoir water level drops, exposing a large strip of yellow soil along the edges, which spoils the beauty. Also, the wind by the lake was very strong, howling in our faces, and we were practically frozen silly.
However, when we went up to Wanfang Pavilion, we could overlook the reservoir—the vast lake stretched endlessly, merging with the blue sky, water and sky of one color—it was pretty amazing! [Practical Tip: On-site tickets at Jinghuayuan cost 40 yuan, but there are discounts online.]
The fountain show started at 20:00 and was quite spectacular. The wind by the river was bitterly cold, freezing us to the bone. Even so, many people came to watch, making it quite lively. After watching the fountain, we could stroll around nearby—there were many specialty shops, and the red tangerine peel and rice wine were good.
Also not to be missed: the local cuisine, chicken, fish from Wanlv Lake, and Che Tian tofu.
