Liuzhou, the Pride of Guangxi: More Than Just Luosifen! Explore its Stunning Landscapes in Three Days and Two Nights! Liuzhou is a city located in the north-central part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Historically known as 'Dragon City', its terrain is described as 'three rivers converging, embracing the city like a pot', hence it’s also called 'Pot City'. With peculiar and beautiful rocky mountains, magnificent karst caves, deep emerald springs, and winding, clear rivers, Liuzhou boasts excellent cultural and historical scenery and abundant tourism resources. It’s a national top-grade tourist city and a famous historical and cultural city.
So, how to play in Liuzhou? First stop, I'll take you up to the top of Liuzhou to overlook the city's beautiful scenery!
Liuzhou Diwang Tower is definitely worth a visit! Not only are the views stunning, but you can also take on a high-altitude challenge under highly secure conditions—the sense of achievement is off the charts!
On a clear day, the photos are gorgeous, especially if you catch the sunset around 6 pm—it’s stunningly beautiful!
If you’re traveling in Liuzhou, don’t miss this thrilling spot!
Next, we head to Ma'an Mountain. One of the ancient eight scenic spots of Liuzhou, Ma'an Mountain lies on the south bank of the Liu River in the city center. With an elevation of 270 meters, it’s the highest peak in the urban area.
It has long been a favorite spot for tourists seeking tranquility and panoramic views. From the summit, you can overlook most of downtown Liuzhou.
Now, in this crisp autumn weather, standing on the glass platform at the summit and gazing out over the Liuzhou river scenery, your mood will instantly brighten…
Ma'an Mountain has a lift that goes directly to the top, but the last lift is at 16:50! This means if you take the lift up, you'll only see a panoramic view of Liuzhou; to enjoy the night scenery, you’ll need to wait on the summit until at least 7:30 pm.
Actually, Ma'an Mountain isn’t very high—climbing up takes about half an hour, and descending only twenty minutes.
In the evening, of course, you must try Luosifen! How can you say you’ve been to Liuzhou without it? It has a unique flavor that’s spicy, refreshing, fresh, sour, and piping hot. Even if you order delivery in Liuzhou, it tastes far better than what you’d get elsewhere.
Luosifen’s deliciousness also comes from its unique broth, which is made from river snails, sand ginger, star anise, cinnamon, cloves, various chilies, and other natural spices and flavorings. The reason it’s called 'Luosifen' is that its soup is simmered with snails. Outsiders might not be used to the spicy and slightly fishy taste of the broth, but that’s precisely its greatest characteristic.
The quality of the rice noodles is crucial. Round, dried rice noodles are smooth, slippery, and springy—truly bouncy in texture, and the taste is fantastic! If you want a taste sensation, you must try this delicious Luosifen when you come to Liuzhou!
Next, we leave the city and head to Liuzhou's Mengwu Miao Village to experience the simple, authentic local culture.
In the Miao language, 'Mengwu' means 'hello'. This village is a national poverty-alleviation project, developed in recent years. It’s still a niche attraction with few crowds, offering a genuine taste of Miao culture.
The performances here are truly spectacular—there’s even a knife-walking act where a random audience member is carried on the performer’s back. It’s incredibly thrilling!
You can even test the knives to see if they are real—many visitors are eager to touch them.
With two Miao girls as witnesses, the performer really does climb a ladder of knives.
Before long, everyone picks out various items and prepares to join the newlyweds for the wedding procession—the bridal escort is impressively large.
After enjoying the wonderful Miao performances, let’s explore Liuzhou’s magnificent landscapes!
We all know Liuzhou is an industrial city, but did you know? Deep in the mountains of Liuzhou, there are many beautiful places, like Shuanglonggou (Double Dragon Gully).
Inside Shuanglonggou, shrubs grow lushly, and the air is fresh—a natural 'oxygen bar'. Two small streams meander through the forest, appearing and disappearing like a pair of dragons swimming among the trees, hence the name 'Double Dragon Gully'.
Shuanglonggou is right on the mountain above Mengwu Miao Village. The scenery is mostly natural, and you can experience the beauty of 'flying over' the forest from three dimensions: the ground, through the woods, and from the air.
The sightseeing trail in Shuanglonggou is about 6 kilometers long, and hiking the full loop takes nearly 3 hours, so make sure to wear suitable shoes.
[Tips]
Must-do activities: High-altitude zip-line, Glass walkway, Aerial walkway, Forest coaster
1. Right at the entrance, there are various Instagram-worthy photo spots.
2. You can take a boat ride.
3. There are two paths to the glass walkway: one that passes by all the scenic spots but is longer, and a shortcut that halves the time—a good choice if you don’t want to climb.
4. For descending, you can take the forest coaster for 40 yuan per person, which whisks you to the bottom in 3 minutes.
Great for families with children and elderly—a huge natural oxygen bar.
!! Remember to bring snacks and water, and wear comfortable shoes~
After tiring ourselves out at Shuanglonggou, we head to Chengyang Eight Villages to stay overnight, ready to embrace the most beautiful moments of the Dong village the next day. Moreover, staying overnight in the village gives you the privilege of being among the first visitors in the early morning—climbing hills, taking a brisk walk, and gazing at the Wind and Rain Bridge shrouded in mist—utterly delightful~
Chengyang Eight Villages is made up of eight natural villages, surrounded by green hills and woods, with beautiful scenery. Visitors can stroll through the traditional villages to admire the views, visit famous historical sites like the Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge, and watch folk performances showcasing Dong customs. It’s a wonderful place for sightseeing, photography, and experiencing Dong culture. It’s only a 20-minute drive from Sanjiang County town, with easy road access.
The villages preserve old streets, drum towers, and ancient alleyways, with people wearing traditional clothing and passing on the custom of the Hundred Family Feast.
The best way to explore Chengyang Eight Villages is to stay overnight. In the evening, you can avoid the daytime crowds and truly live like a local, soaking in the village’s atmosphere and scenery.
Among the villages, Yanzhai has the historic Helong Bridge, and next to the drum tower in Yanzhai, there’s also the Sanjiang Dong Folk Craft Museum, which is well worth a visit!
Here’s a little travel tip: The classic itinerary starts from the scenic area entrance at Chengyang Bridge and Ma'an Village, then walks to Pingzhai, Yanzhai, Pingtanzhai, Dongzhai, finally arriving at Dazhai, covering most of the highlights. This walking route takes about 2–3 hours. The villages along the way are very rustic, with exquisite wooden drum towers and ancient bridges. In particular, the iconic Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge is a precious historical structure that you should definitely visit.
