2022 Happy Self-Driving Tour – Guangxi Chapter
Due to the impact of the pandemic, we hadn't traveled for eight or nine months. From June 25 to July 27, over 33 days, our couple and a friend couple, four people in total, went on a self-driving tour of three provinces: Guangxi, Yunnan, and Sichuan. Starting from Guangzhou, we drove straight to Guangxi. In nine days, we visited areas in Guangxi including Hezhou, Guilin, Liuzhou, Nanning, and Baise. The scenery of Guangxi is truly beautiful, and transportation, food, and accommodation were all very good and reasonably priced, making our trip very enjoyable!
Day 1: Guangzhou – Huangyao Ancient Town

Huangyao Ancient Town is located in Zhaoping County, Hezhou, Guangxi, with a history of nearly 1000 years. The ancient town preserves over 20 temples and shrines, and more than 10 pavilions and towers, mostly built in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Famous attractions include the former site of the Guangxi Provincial Working Committee, the ancient stage, and Anle Temple. Huangyao Ancient Town was listed by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage as the third batch of China's historical and cultural towns in 2007, and was just approved as a 5A scenic spot by the National Tourism Administration this year.

Former site of the CPC Guangxi Provincial Working Committee, originally Baozhu Temple, built in the third year of Jiajing of Ming Dynasty (1524 AD). After the July 9th Incident in Guilin in 1942, the CPC Guangxi Provincial Working Committee moved to the countryside, and in the summer of 1945 moved to Huangyao Town, Zhaoping County, carrying out revolutionary work in secrecy at Baozhu Temple.

Around Huangyao Ancient Town, nine mountains including Wine Pot, Zhenwu, Rooster, Folding Snail, Across the River, Tianma, Paradise, Niu Rock, and Guandao converge towards the town. Three small rivers, Yaojiang, Xiaozhujiang, and Xingning River meet in the ancient town. The residents of Huangyao Ancient Town mainly come from the southeastern region of China, and the location of the town was deeply influenced by the Han Chinese feng shui culture of the southeast. Huangyao Ancient Town is surrounded by mountains and green waters, possessing all the elements required by southeastern feng shui theory.

Huangyao Ancient Town now preserves more than 300 Ming and Qing ancient buildings, covering an area of 16,000 square meters. Eight stone slab streets are completely preserved, all paved with bluestone slabs, totaling more than 10 kilometers.

After touring Huangyao Ancient Town, I felt it was one of the better ancient towns in terms of tourism quality among those we have visited. A thought: Under the scorching sun, we toured Huangyao; murmuring streams speak of coolness; the bluestone streets hold many stories; each old house pours out heartfelt tales. Within the town, a world of human warmth; outside the town, green mountains and solitary peaks; our predecessors planted shade trees, leaving blessings for future generations!

Day 2: Huangyao Ancient Town – Yangshuo
After breakfast, from Huangyao Ancient Town to Hezhou Zhongshan Ink Landscape – Hundred Mile Gallery, tour there, then arrive in Yangshuo in the afternoon, take a boat tour of the Li River. Accommodation: Yangshuo Xingping Leisure Guesthouse
Hundred Mile Gallery is located in Zhongshan County, Hezhou City, belonging to karst peak forest landform. Due to the pandemic, there were almost no tourists, only the four of us playing there. The scenic area is large, walking under the sun is not feasible, and we found that we could drive in from the village next to the scenic area and enter it.

Hundred Mile Gallery has tranquil and charming mountains, lotus ponds, and pastoral scenery. Green mountains and clear waters, lush lotus ponds. A gentle breeze blows, lotus flowers sway, pure and natural. Due to the pandemic, there were very few tourists, and the scenic area was very quiet.

Yangshuo County is 65 kilometers from Guilin city center. The unique and beautiful landscape has earned Yangshuo the reputation of 'Yangshuo's scenery surpasses Guilin'.

The archway under Nanxun Pavilion at Nanxunmen Pier in Yangshuo records the highest flood levels of the Li River over the years. This year's June flood was second only to those of 1908 and 1954.

The character '带' (belt) inscribed on the cliff by Wang Yuanren, a descendant of the sage of calligraphy Wang Xizhi, contains the artistic conception of 'A river and mountains, peerless in the world, hard work in youth, eternal fame'. One character can be interpreted into sixteen characters, making it a masterpiece of Chinese calligraphy.

Xingping Ancient Town is a brilliant pearl on the Li River, located 25 kilometers from Yangshuo County. It includes eight major scenic areas such as Nine Horse Mural Hill, Snail Hill, Lotus Rock, Tianshui Village, and Lingbao Pavilion.

We chose to take a boat tour of the river. It happened to be Sunday, so there were many tourists, every boat full. The Li River scenery was nice, but the boat tour experience was not good. To earn extra revenue, the boat operator arranged many time-consuming optional paid projects, causing chaos on the boat. The voyage that should have taken an hour was dragged to almost two hours before returning to the dock.

For dinner, we went to the most famous 'Sister Liu Beer Fish' restaurant, but after eating, we found it average.
Day 3: Yangshuo – Lipu – Liuzhou
Popular attractions were crowded and overly commercial, so we chose to go to a lesser-known scenic spot – 'Shangri-La', where there were far fewer tourists. To taste authentic Lipu taro, we made a special trip to Lipu County. After tasting Lipu taro, we visited the Lijiang Bay scenic area. We arrived in Liuzhou in the evening, had dinner on a boat on the Liujiang River, and after dinner took a boat to enjoy the night view of the Liujiang River. Accommodation: Liuzhou Lanting Hotel
For breakfast, of course, we had Guilin rice noodles.
'Shangri-La scenic area' is located near Baisha Town, Yangshuo County, mainly consisting of Lotus Pond, Swallow Lake, Swallow Cave, Dong ethnic customs, and primitive tribes. It is a national AAAA scenic area, one of the first national agricultural tourism demonstration sites, and a recommended tourist destination by the World Tourism Organization.

Arrived in Lipu County at noon, visited Lijiang Bay Scenic Area. Lijiang Bay is located in the southeast of Lipu County, Guilin City, 100 kilometers from Guilin city. Lijiang Bay is 10 kilometers long, covering an area of 500 hectares, consisting of the iconic Sparrowhawk Mountain, Elephant Trunk Hill, Five Finger Mountain, Dragon Head Mountain, White Stone Mountain, Red Horse and White Horse Mountains, and the Lijiang River, a tributary of the Pearl River, along with ecological pastoral scenery on both sides.

Lijiang Bay Scenic Area had beautiful scenery and few people. Only the four of us were tourists that day, led by a guide. First, we took a boat tour of the Lijiang River, then transferred to a dragon boat and rowed ourselves. After landing, we visited the 'Tiangong Cave' karst cave.

In Lipu, you must taste the famous Lipu taro. Lipu taro is large and nutritious. Cut into thin slices, fried, and then placed between pork to make braised pork belly, the flavor is special, the meat is not greasy, making it a famous delicacy.

Day 4: Liuzhou – Chengyang Eight Villages
There was nothing worth seeing in Liuzhou city. We strolled around Liuhou Temple and Liuyaobu Ancient Town, then arrived at Chengyang Eight Villages in the afternoon. Accommodation: Chengyang Eight Villages Banwu Yueshan Guesthouse
In the morning, we visited Liuhou Temple. Liuhou Temple is located in the west corner of Liuhou Park in the center of Liuzhou. It was built by the people of Liuzhou in memory of Liu Zongyuan, a famous politician, thinker, and writer of the Tang Dynasty. The current Liuhou Temple was rebuilt according to the Qing Dynasty structure, displaying many cultural relics and historical materials reflecting Liu Zongyuan's life and achievements.
Liu Zongyuan, courtesy name Zihou, Han ethnicity, one of the Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song dynasties, a writer, philosopher, prose writer, and thinker of the Tang Dynasty, known as 'Liu Hedong' or 'Mr. Hedong'. Because he ended his official career as the prefect of Liuzhou, he is also called 'Liu Liuzhou'.

In Sanjiang County, which borders Hunan and Guizhou, there are eight Dong villages connected together. They not only preserve the ancient traditions of Dong wooden buildings, clothing and accessories, song and dance culture, and living customs, but also continue to develop in integration with modern life, successfully becoming a tourist new village that makes visitors linger.

Chengyang Eight Villages consist of eight Dong villages: Ma'an Stockade, Pingtan Stockade, Ping Stockade, Yan Stockade, Dong Stockade, Dazhai Stockade, Pingfu Stockade, and Jichang Stockade, covering an area of 12.55 square kilometers, with 2,197 households and 9,701 residents. The national key cultural relic protection unit – Chengyang Yongji Bridge is located on the Linxi River next to Chengyang Eight Villages.

Chengyang Yongji Bridge, also called Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge or Chengyang Huilong Bridge. Construction began in 1912, took 12 years, and was completed in 1924. Chengyang Yongji Bridge spans the Linxi River and is a typical Dong building, a stone pier wooden structure pavilion-style building. It is mainly built of wood and stone, with 2 abutments, 3 piers, and 4 spans. On the piers, there are 5 tower-style bridge pavilions and 19 bridge galleries, connecting the pavilions and galleries. The bridge pavilions have high flying eaves; the bridge's wall pillars, tile eaves, are carved and painted. Chengyang Yongji Bridge is a comprehensive architectural masterpiece, combining gallery, pavilion, and tower, with a unique charm in the history of Chinese and foreign architecture. It is a representative work of Dong wind and rain bridges, the best-preserved and largest wind and rain bridge, a crystallization of the wisdom of the Dong people, and an artistic treasure of Chinese wooden architecture. In 1982, Chengyang Yongji Bridge was listed as the second batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

Ping Stockade Single Pillar Drum Tower. The Dong drum tower is the most distinctive regional building of the Dong region, popular in Guizhou, Hunan, and Guangxi. The drum tower uses anticorrosive wood with mortise and tenon joints, without using a single nail or peg. Due to its tight and solid structure, it can last for hundreds of years without decay or leaning. The central pillar rises high, with horizontal beams crisscrossed, fitting together perfectly, using the lever principle to support layer by layer. In ancient times, the Dong drum tower also served as a meeting place, a warning when enemies invaded by beating drums, and other functions.

Chengyang Eight Villages is not far from Longji Rice Terraces, so we decided to go see Longji Rice Terraces. We had wanted to go to Longji Rice Terraces long ago, and originally thought the terraces with rice paddies would lose some charm, but it turned out to be unexpectedly beautiful, with breathtaking scenery. In the morning, we went up the mountain under light rain to view the Zhuang rice terraces 'Seven Stars with Moon' and 'Nine Dragons and Five Tigers'. Then we headed to Nanning. Accommodation: Nanning Hotel

The most famous 'Seven Stars with Moon' in Longji Rice Terraces is the essence of Longji, consisting of seven small hilltop terraces and one large hilltop terrace. The entire mountain is covered with narrow terraces, and the ridges look like contour lines.
Clouds alternately blocked the terraces and then dispersed, allowing us to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

After seeing 'Seven Stars with Moon', we walked along the stone road to see 'Nine Dragons and Five Tigers'.
During the Qin and Han dynasties, the terrace farming method had already formed in Longsheng. In the Tang and Song dynasties, Longsheng rice terraces were developed on a large scale, and by the Ming and Qing dynasties, they basically reached the current scale. Longsheng rice terraces have a history of at least 2,300 years, making them the world's original rice terraces.

After enjoying the views, we walked back to the guesthouse along the path, checked out, and set off for Nanning.
After leaving Longji Rice Terraces, we arrived in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, that afternoon. Checked into Nanning Hotel, a long-established five-star hotel.
In the evening, we tasted authentic Guangxi cuisine at 'Gui Xiaochu', a representative of Guangxi cuisine. The 'Friend Fish' was really delicious.
Day 7: Nanning – Detian Waterfall
In the morning, we visited Nanning Qingxiu Mountain Scenic Area. In the afternoon, we arrived in Chongzuo, visited the Left River Leaning Tower and Detian Waterfall. Accommodation: Detian No.1 Inn
In the morning, we visited Nanning Qingxiu Mountain Scenic Area. Qingxiu Mountain, originally called Qingshan, also known as Taiqing Peak, is located on the banks of the winding Yongjiang River. On top of Qingshan, there is a tall pagoda, known as the 'green lungs' of Nanning. It is also the site of the Nanning Botanical Garden and is the top-ranked 5A scenic spot in Guangxi.

Leaving Nanning, we arrived in Chongzuo City in the Baise area at noon, visited the famous local Left River 'Leaning Tower'.

Left River Leaning Tower, also known as Guilong Tower, is one of the eight major leaning towers in the world. It is located two kilometers northeast of Chongzuo city center, built on the stone island in the Left River – Aotou Peak. The tower was built in the Ming Dynasty (1621) with three stories, and in the 35th year of Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1696), two more stories were added, making it a five-story brick tower with a base diameter of 5 meters, a tower height of 28 meters, and an octagonal shape.

That afternoon, we arrived in Daxin County, Chongzuo City, and visited the famous Detian Waterfall.

Detian Waterfall is located in the upper reaches of the Guichun River in Daxin County, about 50 meters from the 53rd boundary marker on the China-Vietnam border. The clear Guichun River is a tributary of the Left River and also the border river between China and Vietnam. The waterfall is majestic and spectacular, connected to the adjacent Ban Gioc Waterfall in Vietnam. It is the largest transnational waterfall in Asia and the fourth largest in the world, with an average annual water flow about three times that of Huangguoshu Waterfall in Guizhou, and is a national AAAAA-level scenic spot in China.
