Beijing: May Day Visit to the Western Beijing Rapeseed Flower Sea Festival
When spring arrives and flowers bloom, I always recall Song Dynasty poet Yang Wanli's poem 'Staying at the Xu Gong Shop in Xinshi': 'Through sparse hedges, a deep path winds; new leaves on trees haven't yet formed shade. Children chase yellow butterflies in haste; they vanish into rapeseed flowers without a trace.' The poem paints a beautiful picture of a rapeseed flower sea. Now, you can also witness this stunning rapeseed flower sea in Beijing.
This rapeseed flower sea lies in a 200-mu farmland in Guaicun (literally 'Strange Village') in Wangzuo Town, Fengtai District, 37 kilometers southwest of Tiananmen Square. Locals have carefully crafted the area into a perfect photo spot. Under the azure sky, golden waves ripple, and the fragrant rapeseed flowers are refreshing. The ticket design itself is poetic; on it is an acrostic poem that reads horizontally: 'Guaicun Rapeseed Flower Festival'.
Giant windmills, balloons, and rustic photo frames—pick any angle and you'll snap a gorgeous pastoral masterpiece.
If you feel tired, sit down and rest on a countryside chair amidst the flowers. Pick up a paintbrush and add your own touch to the pastoral landscape. You can also send a postcard from the flower sea to your future self.
In the flower sea, giant cartoon characters like the Rubber Duck and Doraemon wave at you, while the heart-shaped flower corridor and white Crescent Bay await your embrace.
There's also a group of whimsical scarecrows 'diligently' working in the fields. Fancy a photo with them?
Many wonder why it's called 'Guaicun' (Strange Village). According to locals, a peculiar grass grew by the river in the village. Not knowing its name, they called it 'strange grass.' So the village was named 'Strange Grass Village,' later shortened to 'Guaicun.' The name is unusual but easy to remember. Around May Day, the rapeseed flowers are at their most beautiful. Bring family and friends to enjoy the blooms, take photos, and check in—it will be a trip well worth it.
