Beijing Fenghuangling Natural Scenic Area is rich in cultural landscapes. There are numerous relics and sites of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian religious culture as well as ancient oriental health preservation culture, with profound cultural heritage. They blend harmoniously with the natural scenery, forming over 40 scenic spots along the southern, central, and northern routes within the area.

The northern route features peculiarly steep and massive rocks with the most dense concentration of scenic spots. Fenghuangling is part of a corner of Beijing's Western Hills. Unlike other peaks, the mountains here have fewer trees but are dominated by massive rocks, mostly weathered rocks, including typical coastal landforms. Some paths on the northern route are carved out of the giant boulders, with slopes up to 90 degrees, making the climb extremely thrilling. Near some boulders, there is barely room to turn around, and you might even need to use both hands and feet to scramble up, very exhilarating. For an adult with normal fitness, it takes over 3 hours to reach the summit, but there are many steps—over 2,000 stone steps—making it the most difficult of the three routes. It's a good choice for rock climbing enthusiasts or avid hikers.

The central route is centered around Longquan Temple, forming a '0'-shaped loop over 2,000 meters long, much smaller than the southern loop. You can hike around the small hill, and it requires the least physical effort and time of the three routes, making it very suitable for seniors and children.

The southern route is relatively flat, mainly for enjoying Fenghuangling's natural scenery, with no strenuous climbing. It also has the most dense vegetation among the three routes, with many wild walnut trees; at Walnut Gully, you can even pick wild walnuts. It also boasts the most cultural sites, with temples like Miaojue Chan Temple and Huangpu Temple forming a triangular religious cultural route. The southern route takes about 6 hours to complete. From the starting point, you can proceed without backtracking, eventually returning to the starting point. If you want a more relaxed hike but still see many sights, choose the southern route. Though it takes the longest time, you'll visit plenty of spots with relatively lower physical exertion, and you can pick wild walnuts for a fun experience.

Longquan Temple is within Fenghuangling Natural Scenic Area, nestled at the foot of the Western Hills' Fenghuangling. It is a Han Buddhist temple originally built in the early Yingli period of the Liao Dynasty. In front of the temple gate stand two vigorous cypress trees over 600 years old. Inside, there are two stout and towering ginkgo trees and two ancient cypresses, all over a thousand years old as of 2015. The temple's original site faced east; a single-arch ancient stone bridge inside is still well preserved.

Along the way, there are mountains, streams, wild fruits, and beautiful scenery. To be honest, the climb was tiring, but very enjoyable and relaxing. After descending, we went to a farmhouse restaurant for barbecue and sang karaoke.
