Into the Forbidden City: Capturing Exquisite History Through the Lens

Over the past couple of years, after watching the first three seasons of 'New Arrivals at the Forbidden City,' our elementary schooler's interest in the Forbidden City has grown, and they specifically asked to visit the Forbidden City and Prince Gong's Mansion. An interest is a good thing, and as parents we like to encourage it, so the Forbidden City became one of the focal points of this learning trip. So here it is: 'Here I Am, Forbidden City!' Enjoy!

Life needs a pair of eyes that discover beauty. When you stand before the Forbidden City and step inside to learn its history, you are captivated by everything—the graceful beauty of the architecture, the exquisite allure of the treasures. It's a feast for the eyes, overwhelming and unforgettable. Especially lucky was the weather being so cooperative; every casual snapshot captured both my footsteps and my mood.

Within half a day, following the guide's explanations, I gained a clear understanding of the historical tales and the origins of the cultural relics. I covered over half of the Forbidden City, taking more than 700 photos. Sometimes, to get a perfect shot, I had to wait under the scorching sun for the crowds to thin. For a unique shot of a national treasure, I'd politely wait while elderly visitors and children admired it, then seize the moment with quick reflexes. Haha, now I see why professional photographers are fully geared up and deeply tanned. As for the young man from Jiangsu I met by the red wall—sorry we didn't get to shoot the Golden Dragon spectacle together due to time constraints. Work has been so busy, and I rarely find time to quietly sort through everything. I mustn't do this half-heartedly; I want no regrets. Editing and reviewing today, the memories come flooding back, vivid and truly worthwhile.

Above, I focused on the magnificent splendor of the palace buildings.

In the following, I'll highlight the dazzling opulence of the Treasure Gallery, utterly exquisite.

Then, various lifelike jade carvings and unbelievably fine porcelain. All these close-ups I took when the moment was right. So many visitors were deeply captivated, lingering and unwilling to move on. I would wait and wait—there's always a second that belongs to me.

There's always a treasure that will rivet your gaze, the more you look the more you love it, utterly fascinated.

After that, I showcase the varied and exquisitely crafted clocks of the Clock Gallery, masterpieces of skill.

While marveling at such craftsmanship, let us cherish time and beauty, and cherish each moment as we go.

Step into the Imperial Garden and soak in the leisurely atmosphere of the imperial court.

By bus or by bicycle, let's head together to Prince Gong's Mansion.

The bustling commercial streets are shoulder-to-shoulder with crowds, and the lively old lanes and alleys stretch seemingly without end. The young crowd's nightlife is just beginning, but we must head back to the hotel to recharge. On Beijing's buses and subways, don't expect a seat—just squeeze in and stand firm for six stops. Use Alipay to scan when boarding and exiting; just bring your phone and yourself. Alright then, turn on the internet and location services, and Ctrip and Gaode Maps will guide you wherever you wish, freely roaming the capital.

Rushing along, snapping photos nonstop, the elementary schooler now has lively and memorable material for their summer diary (I've captured everything in such detail that you can flip through anytime and relive the memories). Gradually, you'll understand why I broke away from the guide-led group, why I clocked so many steps and got so tanned, and why there were so many discoveries and rewards. To gain something, it's simply about reading ten thousand books and traveling ten thousand miles—one through the eyes, the other with the feet, both with the heart. Reading and experience go hand in hand, linking theory with practice. Young as you are, you need to accumulate and reflect, to be a mindful person.

Here, I also want to thank all you readers who have persisted to the end—it shows patience and maybe you're drawn in, so I must express my respect and gratitude. Please do share your thoughts; communication is how we improve!

Modern life is so busy and restless that I've almost completely lost the prose-writing skills I once had. I must read and learn more, or else future travelogues will find me tapped out with nothing to write.

So, my 'First Impressions of the Forbidden City' comes to a pause here. Next episode, I'll carefully organize it when I have time.
