Geographic China – June 27, 2020: Underwater Phantom Shadows – Laishui's Wondrous Spring (Part 1)

A folk song about Yugu Spring has long been passed down:

In the mountains of Yesanpo there's a strange spring,

Clear water gushes from the cave without end.

At Grain Rain it sprays fish by the hundreds,

To solve its mystery, ask the gods.

Yugu Cave and Spring is located in central Yesanpo, consisting of Yugu Cave and Yugu Spring, and is one of the core scenic areas of Yesanpo.

The fish in Yugu Cave Spring are locally called 'Shikou fish' (stone-mouth fish), scientifically known as the multi-scaled shovel-jaw fish. These fish prefer quiet and often emerge from the spring vent at night. The larger fish follow the outflow into the river, while some small ones linger near the vent.

Around the time of the Grain Rain (Guyu) solar term each year, the spring cave continuously sprays out fish, a mystery for ages. Thus, this spring is recognized as one of the world's 'Eight Great Strange Springs' and listed as a world wonder.

Yugu Spring water is sweet, cool and refreshing, gushing endlessly year-round. Rich in a variety of beneficial minerals and trace elements, it is a rare natural mineral water.

Yugu Cave Spring boasts not only magical fish but also a wondrous cave. The explored underground cave is about 1,800 meters long and has five levels. Each level is unique, truly 'every level has scenery, every view is extraordinary, caves within caves, all interconnected.'

The diverse cave formations were shaped over hundreds of millions of years or longer, masterpieces bestowed by nature upon humanity.

The cave features unique geology, with stalactites, stalagmites, stone flags, and stone curtains crisscrossing in dazzling profusion, overwhelming your eyes with endless wonders.

Yesanpo is situated in the Taihang Mountains within Laishui County, Baoding City, Hebei Province, about 100 kilometers southwest of Beijing. It encapsulates 3 billion years of North China's geological tectonic evolution, serving as a natural geological museum rich in scientific significance.
