The shifting visual experiences and the just-right sense of harmony come from the interplay of architecture and nature. In this northern land, spring has arrived, so the carved beams and painted eaves are not the only colors in the ancient city. April brings a magnificent dreamscape here.
The breeze, tinged with the fragrance of plants, is the most inviting sign. Once inside the ancient city, follow the scenic waterway and you'll see lush greenery fringing the river. The murmur of flowing water and the swaying branches bring vibrant life.
Nature's beauty is inherently changeable, but the presence of ancient architecture adds an atmospheric touch.
Walk further, and your footprints will be scented with blossoms. Wander leisurely and enjoy the views. Pink crabapple blossoms, plucked from the glow of sunset, drift by doors and windows, clustering into a soft cloud, silently radiating allure. Turn your head, and see dappled light falling on the grass, blooming into small yellow flowers, flaunting their tender charm.
These wayside plants, set against the ancient buildings, bloom anew this year, yet seem rooted for ages. Year after year, they revive, ever-present and ever-radiant.
After a stroll in the city, head to the waterside path to take in the mountain-and-water scenery. A different view awaits.
If the city showcases 'towers and pavilions,' here you'll find 'terraces and kiosks.' In April, walk along the Fushan Pengri or Huagai Yanlan waterside platforms, and you can see two unique 'rivers' of this season.
The first is, naturally, the murmuring Yishui River. In spring, the Yishui River sheds its historical melancholy. Under the warm afternoon sun, it becomes a scene of tranquility.
The second is a sea of flowers on the bank. The February Orchids spread in vast swaths, like a purple sea flowing down the slopes, meandering all the way to the riverbank with gentle, graceful ripples.
The riverside path is a transition line between nature and architecture, cleverly blending two different worlds. It's as if one can choose between seclusion and worldly engagement in a single thought.
April in Yandu Ancient City is magnificent, romantic, bursting with the vigor and passion of all things in bloom. Such beauty must be savored in time, to not betray this land of brocade and the city bathed in spring light.
