Yesanpo, How Wild Is It?
China is so vast, I want to see it. I'll take you to a place you may have been or not.
Yesanpo, How Wild Is It?
Yesanpo, a magical darling of the earth
Located in Laishui County, Baoding, Hebei Province, Yesanpo is a 'newcomer' among national scenic spots, but it is already a national 5A-level tourist attraction.
Yesanpo lies at the intersection of the Taihang and Yanshan mountain ranges in northern China, on the northern end of the Zijingguan deep fault zone. Over 1.4 billion years of geological evolution have created its majestic, perilous, peculiar, and secluded natural landscapes.
Within the North China intraplate orogenic belt, Yesanpo's geological relics are typical, rare, and systematic, making it a vivid classroom for earth science.
Yesanpo boasts seven major scenic areas and 108 attractions, but here we'll focus on the highlight and most popular spot: Baili Gorge.
Baili Gorge is one of Yesanpo's most distinctive scenic areas, hailed as the 'Number One Gorge Under Heaven.'
In this hundred-li-long (50 km) 'structural gorge' where 'twin cliffs lean against the sky and myriad crags split from the earth,' sheer cliffs rise thousands of feet high, precarious precipices abound, wild streams wind through, and the scenery changes with every step. Multiple phases of intense tectonic movement and magmatic activity have left behind magnificent scrolls of natural history.
The TV series 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms' filmed the scene of Cao Cao's defeat and escape through Huarong Road here.
The gorge walls are nearly vertical, as if hewn by axes and knives, which geologists call a 'zhang valley.' It formed through the development of multiple sets of vertical fissures in the rock layers (known as tectonic joints), later shaped by collapse, scouring by mountain streams, and erosion.
The Great Fissure was formed when rocks along vertical joint planes collapsed due to weathering and were then carried away by water erosion. If the fissure widens further, it creates a 'One-Line Sky.'

Yesanpo is a Global Geopark with complete geological relics, clearly visible unconformities of various types, and a full range of rock relics including intrusive, volcanic, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Abundant tectonic features like joints, faults, and folds stand out, along with a rich variety of mimic landforms. Walking through Baili Gorge, you'll experience pristine nature and marvel at landscapes shaped by uncanny craftsmanship.
