Recalling the first trip of 2021. The pandemic in 2020 made traveling last year incredibly difficult. Missed the cherry blossoms in South Korea, missed the long-awaited graduation trip... Time flew by, a year passed. At the beginning of 2021, I hoped to start a new year's journey with a brand new trip.

My impression of Chongqing

Why choose Chongqing as the first trip of 2021? Because Chengdu to Chongqing is really convenient, so I often have the opportunity to go to Chongqing, but Chongqing is always enjoyable no matter how many times you go; besides, with the epidemic and the approaching Spring Festival, I was afraid of unexpected situations on long trips. I remember that every time I went to Chongqing I came to Hongya Cave, and my friends said the same thing on WeChat Moments; I always end up here somehow, but even if it's the same place, I seem to find new joy each time. Perhaps that's the charm of Chongqing. Evaluate Chongqing with four words: "Love and hate"! The reasons for loving it are not only those mentioned above. Although I have been to Chongqing many times, I always discover new things: new hotpot restaurants, new photo spots, new street corners. I enjoy the satisfaction of exploring a city. And I hate it no less than I love it: the unpleasant weather, the huffing and puffing from climbing up and down, the helplessness of taking unnecessary detours—my feelings for it are complicated. If I say I like it, it seems not so much; if I say I don't like it, I still want to go to Chongqing from time to time. It makes me a contradiction.

"Walking in Chongqing is like walking between reality and dreams."

? Movies and Magazines Are All for You

Remember Huang Bo running wildly on the crisscrossing overpasses?

In 2006, "Crazy Stone" made Chongqing a hit overnight, and since then Chongqing has been closely linked with movies.

From "Crazy Stone", "I Belonged to You", "Chongqing Hotpot" to "Better Days", more and more movies are enchanted by Chongqing, and more people come to Chongqing again for a movie.

A director said: "Chongqing is a mix of old and new. In one neighborhood you can see different styles and buildings from various eras, but they blend naturally without being abrupt. This city has a kind of chaotic order, which is itself surreal. You don't see this elsewhere, creating great tension in both content and form."

As the super popular spokespersons of Chongqing, TFboys' every movie and every magazine attract countless people to check in Chongqing. Today, this part will follow the footsteps of Yi Yangqianxi, Wang Junkai, and Wang Yuan together.

Yi Yangqianxi: Coming for "Better Days"

In 2019, once "Better Days" was broadcast, it pushed Chongqing to another peak. At the cinema, I immediately recognized the filming location was Chongqing; otherwise, which other city has such staggered houses? It seems unique to the mountain city. Big cities give a certain sense of distance, while the mountain city feels more real and full of life, which also fits the film's temperament.

The director said: "Chongqing has many large overpasses, high-rise buildings, and small alleys, like a maze. Putting characters here gives a feeling that they can't escape this place, which helps the film present the inescapable melancholy of adolescence."

"You go ahead, I will always be behind you."

"Chen Nian, you are the first person to ask me if it hurts."

"Even though we live in the gutter, we must remember to look up at the stars."

After school every day, Xiao Bei silently accompanied Chen Nian on the road near the Railway Middle School; under the Sujiazhuang Bridge was Xiao Bei's home where he lived alone; Xiao Bei and Chen Nian met at the Toy Children's Car City; at the Tongyuanju subway station, Chen Nian's figure going home...

· Haitangxi Tube-shaped Building

[Address]: Zhenzheng Street, Haitangxi, Nan'an District

Actually, I had been to this tube-shaped building before the movie was released. At that time, it was still a relatively niche place. Who knew that when I came back the second time after the movie was released, the usually quiet and cold tube-shaped building was full of students taking photos.

This is a residential building full of history, and it is also Chen Nian's home in the movie. From the outside, it doesn't look special, but inside it's another world.

This reminds me of what Chen Nian wrote in her textbook: "We all live in the gutter, but some of us still look up at the stars."

Entering from the entrance, you are in the middle to upper floors of the tube-shaped building. An octagonal well-like structure, old staircases, traces of time everywhere. But entering it feels oppressive because the light is dim, like a deep well isolated from the outside world.

(Movie screenshot vs. actual photo)

If you can't find it, ask people on the nearby streets. Basically everyone knows it. You can take photos at the iron gate at the entrance and easily get emotional-style photos.

Now there are many similar tube-shaped buildings in Chongqing, forming a sharp contrast with modern skyscrapers. I hope these buildings are not demolished or rebuilt, preserving Chongqing's original appearance; the older generation of Chongqing people are the witnesses.

· Crown Escalator

[Address]: Floor 1, Crown Building, No. 107, Zhongshan Third Road, Lianglukou

I am deeply impressed by the Crown Escalator because the first time I came to Chongqing, my hotel was near Lianglukou, and I had to go through the Crown Escalator. I was shocked that this escalator was so deep.

(Taken in summer 2017)

The Crown Escalator is 112 meters long, 1.3 meters wide, with a vertical rise of 52.7 meters, running time of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. It is the second longest escalator in Asia and one of the most characteristic transportations in Chongqing. Originally, the Crown Escalator was built to facilitate Chongqing people going up and down the mountain—Lianglukou is on the mountain, Caiyuanba is at the foot. Later, it became increasingly popular with the increase of tourists. In "Go Fighting!", Huang Bo once challenged the escalator task here.

Also, those who have seen "Better Days" are familiar with this place. In the movie, Xiao Bei silently guards Chen Nian by standing on the adjacent elevator as Chen Nian goes to and from school.

We also imitated the film and shot a few small clips; does it feel right? One thing to remind: riding this escalator costs a fee, 2 yuan, need cash. Prepare in advance before going.

· Zhongshan Fourth Road

[Address]: Zhongshan Fourth Road, Yuzhong District

Zhongshan Fourth Road is known as the most beautiful road in Chongqing. This road, only 800 meters long, has quietly spanned three centuries.

The name "Zhongshan Fourth Road" first appeared on a map in the 1930s of the Republic of China. From then on, it was destined to be inseparable from history, representing the past and present of Chongqing. Guiyuan, Teyuan, Zhougongguan, Zhang Xiang's Mansion... these old buildings scatter sporadically along this road.

The whole street is rich in literary atmosphere, shaded by trees, full of depth and mystery. It gives a completely different feeling from other Chongqing streets—quiet, unique.

Along Zhongshan Fourth Road, there are many huangjiao trees. Huangjiao is the city tree of Chongqing, with strong vitality, able to sprout from rock crevices on walls.

(Movie screenshot vs. actual photo)

In the last scene of "Better Days", the adult Xiao Bei still stays behind Chen Nian, adding warmth to the somewhat oppressive atmosphere.

After watching "Better Days", it's worth going to Zhongshan Fourth Road and reliving the movie, making you continue to have hope for life. "You go ahead, I will always be behind you."

[Address]: Kui Xing Lou, No. 17 Datang Plaza, Linjiangmen, Yuzhong District

Kui Xing Lou is located in Linjiangmen. From the spacious square, it looks flat, but the square is connected to the newly built high-rise next to it via a skybridge, while below the skybridge is a "cliff" more than twenty stories high! Therefore, it is also known as the "Disappearing Horizon".

There are two suspended skybridges here. You can stand on one side to take pictures of the other, but if you are afraid of heights, don't look down.

(Movie screenshot vs. actual photo)

Below the skybridge is the place where Xiao Bei walks around the corner in the most popular movie poster. When I went, there was a line to take photos!

This angle is really stunning. It was cloudy when I went; on a good day, the sunlight can slant down perfectly, restoring the movie poster 100%. Walking down from here, not far away is Hongya Cave.

Wang Junkai: Hidden Corners of Residential Buildings

Baixiang Ju is one of my favorite places recently. This treasure residential building has every reason to be popular.

It is said that Baixiang Street got its name from the "Baixiang Temple" on the street. There was a pond in the temple with a white marble elephant carved in it, exactly facing a pair of green stone lions at Xuantan Temple on the south bank, forming a "Green Lion and White Elephant Locking the Yangtze" situation, locking Chongqing's fortune and blessing it with good weather. Baixiang Ju is named for its proximity to Baixiang Street. One Baixiang Street is half of Chongqing's history. It has witnessed the Southern Song Dynasty's resistance against the Mongols and also seen the opening of the "Oriental Wall Street". It has 9 cultural relic buildings and 2 ancient city wall sites. It is a microcosm of Chongqing's development history.

If you can't find the exact location of Baixiang Ju, first navigate to the nearby Yonghui Supermarket. Opposite the supermarket, there is a white elephant sculpture. That's an obvious landmark. Then walk along the road behind the white elephant, and soon you will reach Baixiang Ju.

Can you imagine what it's like to have a residential building with no elevator from the 1st floor to the 24th floor? At first, I thought the residents were amazing, climbing up and down without getting tired. Later, I learned that there are exits to the outside on multiple floors. In that era without elevators, the wisdom of Chongqing people was fully demonstrated. In 1994, Baixiang Ju won the first prize for excellent architectural design in Chongqing.

It first came to public attention from the 2016 classic movie "Chongqing Hotpot". In the movie, Liu Bo, being chased for debts, is beaten in the corridors among the covered bridges of Baixiang Ju.

(Magazine photo vs. actual photo)

(Magazine photo vs. actual photo)

Now, because Wang Junkai took a magazine photo here, Baixiang Ju became popular again. Actually, I wanted to check in here last year, but every time I came to Chongqing, time was tight, so it never happened. This time I prioritized it.

This is one of the most popular spots in Baixiang Ju. On this nearly 90-degree curved slope, hold your phone up to the sky and wait for the cable car of the Yangtze River Cableway to pass by. In front are old residential buildings, and behind is the vaguely visible Raffles City, forming a sharp contrast.

At the window of the corridor, the bridge is clearly visible with a very wide view. "You stand on the bridge looking at the scenery, and people upstairs look at you."

The day I went, the weather was good with a gentle breeze, and I wanted time to freeze at this moment.

At the corner, the stairs behind are the filming location of "The Hidden Corner". Also, local residents in the corridor are playing cards or mahjong. Clothes are drying on the public terrace. Piles of sundries in the corners. Traces of life everywhere.

Wang Yuan: The Hottest Street Convenience Store in the Country

The hottest convenience store in the country is undoubtedly this one! Several beverage coolers line up against the facade of the store on the slope. Through the glass, you can see the drink shelves inside. Various colors interweave, forming a messy beauty, very similar to the style of vending machines on Hong Kong streets.

This convenience store, established in 2016, is open 24 hours, selling cigarettes, alcohol, and drinks. It was originally unremarkable. Later, because the store was too small to hold all the drinks, they had to pile them outside, stacking them up at the door. Unexpectedly, this unintentional move unexpectedly made it popular.

After Wang Yuan came to take magazine photos here, hundreds of people check in every day. It is said that the owner can make thousands of yuan profit a day. The star effect is indeed strong!

That day, after eating hotpot nearby, we went despite the rain because it was close. I thought there would be no one else taking photos in the rain.

The convenience store is at the entrance of a garage. From a distance, it doesn't look noticeable, but when you get closer, it catches your eye.

Indeed, no one was there; tonight the place was ours! Because the convenience store is on a slope, you can choose to shoot from below to make people look taller.

I wonder if everyone noticed the words "Take photos and buy water" next to it? Actually, the store doesn't force people to buy water if they take photos. It's just that too many people come, blocking the way a bit. But most people who come to take photos buy a bottle of water.

Because of its Hong Kong style, you can use some film or vintage filters. A Polaroid photo with this background also looks great!

Here's a behind-the-scenes shot; haha, that's how miserable the reality is behind the pictures. The rain got heavier, shoes got wet, and my sister caught a cold the next day...

? Night Is the Eternal Theme of the Fog City

If you ask which city in China has the most beautiful night view, I think Chongqing is definitely number one! No night view, no Chongqing. The interweaving of buildings and water, layers of beauty. The confluence of the two rivers, the lights coming on, fully displaying the nocturnal aesthetics of Chongqing.

Chongqing's night is the feeling of Hongya Cave: "Searching for him hundreds of times in the crowd, suddenly turning back, he is there in the dimly lit place." Chongqing's night is the splendor of the entire Yuzhong Peninsula seen from Nanshan Yikeshu. Chongqing's night is the magnificence of cruise ships and high-rise buildings blending under the Qiansimen Bridge. Chongqing's night is a street lamp at the corner of the Mountain City Trail...

From dusk to evening in the city's clouds

That afternoon, a bit of sunlight broke through the thick clouds in the Chongqing sky. At five o'clock, I left the hotel and went to the nearby United Nations office building, planning to climb up and overlook the entire city of Chongqing. Xiaoshizi subway station exit is not far away. At the building, take the elevator to the 47th floor, then transfer to another elevator to the 67th floor. Exit the elevator, turn right to the ticket office, then enter from the side.

After entering from the entrance, there is first a not-too-small art exhibition. If you have time, you can rest and look around. Then go to the rooftop via the staircase entrance on the side.

There are signs on the floor. Follow them to a rainbow staircase. Exit the elevator to the rooftop.

Then take the red staircase built on the rooftop to reach the highest helipad. When I went, there were already some tourists, and a photographer was shooting time-lapse.

At that time, the sunset had a little pink tint. I enhanced it a bit later, and a gentle city photo came out.

There are red spiral staircases on both sides of the helipad. One side overlooks the river view of Dongshuimen Yangtze River Bridge, and the other side overlooks the cityscape of Jiefangbei, The Westin, and WFC Global Financial Center.

When night falls, the view is even better. The night view of Chongqing city is in full view! Personally, I think the experience here is better than many high-rise observation decks in other cities because this one uses a semi-open design. Unlike other cities' high-rise observation decks, which are mostly enclosed with glass for safety, you can immerse yourself and experience the thrill of high altitude.

The staircase here is the best place for photos. The cityscape behind makes the photo more epic. However, fog set in at night, so I didn't get the ideal effect.

Looking down from the red staircase for a while makes your legs weak, so just look ahead and walk. Also, you can shoot from above when you are sitting or half-lying on the stairs; it also looks good.

More dreamy than Shanghai: The perfect viewing platform opposite Raffles City

I used to think Hongya Cave's night view was dreamy enough. But this time, when I went to Nanbin Road opposite Raffles City to take photos of Raffles, I found that this place is even more dreamy! Raffles City can be called a landmark building of Chongqing. The most beautiful night view of Chongqing must include Raffles City!

After dinner, you can come for a stroll on Nanbin Road. The beautiful night view along the road and the riverside breeze make you feel great. You can see the Yuzhong Peninsula cityscape on the opposite bank. In the picture above, you can see Qiansimen Bridge and Hongya Cave. The angle is more open, isn't it?

The shape of Raffles City looks like a sailboat. I don't know why, every time I see it, I think of the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. At night, the whole building lights up in different colors. Located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Jialing River, the two rivers clamp the "sailboat", giving it a momentum of riding the wind and waves.

Further down Nanbin Road, there is a ring-shaped landmark on the roadside. Looking at Raffles City through this circle gives a different feeling.

Actually, I originally wanted to go to the arch below to take photos, but unfortunately, the entrance at the bottom was already sealed. Otherwise, the photos would have been even more dreamy.

Besides Qiansimen, what other bridges are worth visiting?

— "What are the beautiful bridges in Chongqing?"

— "Qiansimen Bridge."

— "And?"

— "Hmm, I don't know."

Indeed, tourists only know to go to Qiansimen Bridge to take night photos. This time, while strolling on Nanbin Road, I encountered Dongshuimen Bridge, and I felt it was no less impressive. Mainly, there were almost no people here, only a few passersby.

At first glance, do you mistake it for Qiansimen Bridge? Actually, Dongshuimen Bridge and Qiansimen Bridge are "sister bridges", i.e., "Chongqing Two Rivers Bridge". Dongshuimen Bridge connects Yuzhong and Nan'an. The bridge towers of the two bridges are beautifully curved in space. The "twin bridge" construction method is unique in the world, and it is also a characteristic of Chongqing.

That night, we walked from Longmen Road downstream to Nanbin Road. Along the way, we could see the Yangtze River Cableway. Taking a shot here is also good, very Chongqing.

Further downstream is Dongshuimen Bridge. It took five years to build and opened to traffic in 2014. It was once selected as one of Chongqing's top ten "most beautiful bridges".

Chongqing's ancient city gates have the saying "nine open and eight closed", with a total of 17 gates. Currently, only two ancient gates remain in Chongqing: one is Renhe Gate, and the other is Dongshuimen. Dongshuimen Bridge is named for its construction near Dongshuimen.

The main span of the bridge is 520 meters, the deck is 21 meters wide, and the total length is 1000 meters. It has two levels: the upper level is for pedestrians and two-way four-lane traffic, and the lower level is for two-way rail lines.

Also, in summer, walking on the Dongshuimen Yangtze River Bridge, you can not only feel the slight coolness from the river breeze but also enjoy the beautiful night views of the north and south banks of the Yangtze River in Chongqing. It is also a good viewing platform.

If you come to Chongqing for tourism, I might not recommend spending money on the Yangtze River Cableway, but I would recommend you walk on Dongshuimen Bridge and Qiansimen Bridge, slowly enjoying the beautiful night view of Chongqing.

A niche perspective of the popular Hongya Cave

One of the must-visit spots in Chongqing is Hongya Cave. Especially at night, looking from the opposite bank, it feels like being in the bathhouse of Granny Meng from Spirited Away, full of dreaminess. It is the most landmark building in Chongqing, no doubt.

Hongya Cave is an old internet-famous attraction in Chongqing. It seems that people who have been to Hongya Cave don't want to go again, one because they've been there, and two because Hongya Cave is very crowded.

I've been to Chongqing many times, and every time I go to Hongya Cave (I don't know why). Today, I'll recommend some niche perspectives of the popular Hongya Cave that you must not have been to.

Actually, Hongya Cave was previously photographed even more brilliantly by a Japanese photographer, inside the scenic area. If you are interested, you can look it up. Besides his spot, I only recommend this one spot inside Hongya Cave: by the wooden bridge. From this angle, you can see the stilted buildings of Hongya Cave, bridges in both near and far, and a contrast between warm and cool lights.

Then you can go to Qiansimen Bridge. Shooting Hongya Cave from an oblique angle on the bridge has a different flavor. Set up a tripod to shoot time-lapse or light trails; both look great.

Many people only know to take photos on the road below Hongya Cave. Actually, the opposite side of Hongya Cave is the best spot to take a full view of Hongya Cave (walk across Qiansimen Bridge). The bridge, Hongya Cave, and the tall buildings behind merge together, creating a layered dreaminess.

Finally, here is the place I most want to talk about. By the Jialing River, a niche spot diagonally opposite Hongya Cave. From here, you can see both Qiansimen Bridge and Hongya Cave, along with the tall buildings in the distance and the boats on the river, very three-dimensional!

Walk a few hundred meters downstream from directly opposite Hongya Cave to reach this spot. Basically no one there, you can pose freely. Looking from here, it's absolutely stunning!! Make you the coolest person in your Moments~

I recommend going only at night, not during the day. During the day, it doesn't feel like much; at night, you can capture that dreamy and futuristic feeling.

Use the lights of the bridge and tall buildings behind as blurred background, and take a silhouette shot easily.

[Warm Tips]: 1?? Be careful about safety!!! There might be broken glass bottles, branches, small gravel by the river. It's best to turn on your phone flashlight and watch your feet. 2?? Although waves are generally not a concern, it's best not to get too close to the river to avoid accidentally falling in. 3?? If you have companions, it's better to go together. It is not recommended to go alone for photos. 4?? Follow my suggested time, don't shoot too late, as the road might become hard to walk on. 5?? When taking photos by the river, don't produce trash! If any trash is generated, please bring a bag and take it with you to throw in a trash can. Protect the environment, everyone is responsible.

It turns out there is another fairy tale of Hayao Miyazaki hidden in the mountain city

Besides Hongya Cave, I found a fairy tale world in a small alley of the mountain city!

I discovered it from a video by a Chongqing photographer I stumbled upon. This time in Chongqing, I finally arranged it. This small alley is located in Ma'anshan Community Park on Shangxin Street, Nan'an District. It is free and open to the public. Hurry to check in before it gets overrun by tourists. Less than a minute's walk from the main street, you will see a staircase with Chongqing characteristics. On both sides are old Chongqing houses, paved with bluestone slabs, preserving the original appearance of Chongqing. If you are from Chongqing, you'll feel a sense of childhood.

There is also an old road sign by the roadside, very nostalgic.

At the entrance of the alley, you can see cute Totoro. Although not exquisitely made, it blends well with the environment without being abrupt, adding a cartoon dreamy beauty to this "mountain city trail".

There are also colorful flowers by the roadside. Under the light, looking close up feels like walking into a miniature fairy tale world.

Besides, there are nostalgic TVs, thermos bottles, and various old items placed around. Passersby going up and down, the hazy lights, the hotpot nearby, full of the flavor of life.

? Stepping Abroad, All of a Sudden

Chongqing has a very strong local flavor. Many places naturally carry Chongqing characteristics, as if everywhere you go looks like Chongqing. But during my days wandering in Chongqing, I spent a lot of time searching for B-side scenery that goes against the mountain city's nature. I think this should be an interesting experience, right?

So, here comes the "abroad" chapter of "Chongqing Forest"!

A subway station that looks just like Japan, surprisingly here

[Address]: Daxigou Station, Line 2

I really want to travel to Japan, but unfortunately... However, this newly discovered super niche photo spot in Chongqing is amazing! In a second, you travel to Tokyo. Chongqing finally has a Japanese-style photo spot!

It rained that night, but I insisted on going; otherwise, I wouldn't have time to check in in Chongqing, haha. It is at Daxigou Station on Metro Line 2. Exiting the subway station gives you this picture.

The exit of this station is relatively less crowded, so you don't have to worry about people affecting your photos all the time. This time, I brought an umbrella and a fill light as props. A person holding an umbrella downstairs, the night has a quiet and lonely beauty.

My younger brother, my sister, and I each took a photo, all with mobile phones. In minutes, we got great shots. Originally, there were other buildings on the right side, but I edited them out later to make the picture cleaner.

Daxigou Station itself has a very Japanese-style platform, with many green elements, simple and fresh. I really love it. You can also take very Japanese-style photos inside the station.

Also, walking out of another exit of the subway gives good photo opportunities. Outside is a zebra crossing, with the river and tall buildings behind. Using passing blurred vehicles as a background also feels nice.

Before it becomes too popular, go check it out quickly. Finally, I have to say, every time I go to Chongqing, there are surprises, haha!

??? ???? Chongqing Version of New York

[Address]: Bayi Road, Yuzhong District

Shifting the lens to the other side of the ocean, Chongqing also has a touch of America.

I passed by here by chance and felt it was different from the previous streets. Looking at China Everbright Bank through the gaps between the buildings on the street suddenly gives a foreign feeling.

Walking further forward, you can see the tall building of New York Tower. Its top is pointed, easy to identify. Wait for a "little yellow car" (taxi) from Chongqing to pass by and capture it; instantly feels like on a New York street.

Medieval Castle: A Mysterious Church in a City Park

[Address]: Central Park, Jiangbeizui Central Business District

On the way back to the hotel, I passed a park. Inside the park, there is a Christian church that stands out under the lights.

It was built by American missionaries in 1894. Originally, the church was not here. Previously, an American missionary, the director of Chongqing Kuanren Hospital (now the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University), sent people to buy a shop in Jiangbei Shuyuan Street to carry out missionary work under the guise of medical practice. Due to conflict with local people (historically known as the Jiangbei Religious Case), the church received compensation. The Methodist Church used the compensation to build the Gospel Hall and Jiangbei Medical Hall, with the American missionary serving as the first pastor of Jiangbei Gospel Hall.

During the War of Resistance, the hall carried out various patriotic anti-Japanese propaganda activities. The church's library was expanded into the "Wartime Salvation Library" and organized reading groups. Patriotic groups that held activities here included the Salvation Association, Student Salvation Association, Student Union, Jiangbei Women's Comfort Branch, Aviation Training Class Anti-Japanese Salvation Group, Wartime Books Supply Agency, etc.

In 2005, Jiangbeizui announced a large-scale construction phase. The Gospel Hall, along with some old buildings in Jiangbeizui, was listed in the first batch of reserved relocation projects, starting relocation and reconstruction in 2006. The newly completed Gospel Hall is here. It integrates classical and modern religious architectural styles, not only preserving and inheriting Chongqing's historical architectural culture but also adding a humanistic landscape to the modern Jiangbei CBD financial center.

Currently, this place is very niche, with almost only some local people in the vicinity walking around.

During the day, it is unremarkable, but at night, because it's not in a busy area, it feels like a beauty isolated from the world.

In the glow of the lights, it looks like a fairy tale castle, casting a mysterious veil over this park.

Also, people occasionally hold weddings here. If you go during the day, you can wear brightly colored clothes (such as red) for a better match.

? A Bite of the World, A Bite of Chongqing

So-called cuisine is nothing but meeting again and again. We take you across mountains and seas, sometimes taking root, turning into thousands of dishes, then transforming into the bustling world, crossing the spice paths, after several nights of rivers and lakes, lighting up thousands of lights. In this wonderful culinary journey, you bring laughter, and I have the fortune to receive it. — "Once Upon a Bite"

Like Chengdu, Chongqing is a city you can go to purely for food. It is a city card and the pride of every Chongqing person. Can't be happy without spicy; no spicy, no Chongqing.

Hotpot | Only after eating hotpot in Chongqing can you say it's complete

When mentioning Chongqing, people's first reaction is definitely not Hongya Cave or the monorail, but hotpot!!! Since you're in Chongqing, how can you say you've visited Chongqing without having hotpot at least twice? Here I recommend three super awesome hotpot restaurants, respectively in Nan'an District, Shapingba, and Yuzhong District. Without further ado, let's arrange!

??? Nan Hotpot ???

? Nan Hotpot (Four Community Main Store)

? Address: No. 3-1, Unit 3, Building 3, No. 236 Nancheng Avenue, Garden Village 5

? Transportation: Metro Loop Line Nanhu Station Exit 3, walk 930 meters

Nan Hotpot has always been super popular. Earlier, Nan Hotpot from Chongqing opened a branch in Chengdu. I went with a friend and thought it was amazing! But my friend said the one in Chongqing tastes even better. It is said that people start queuing for Chongqing's Nan Hotpot at four in the afternoon!

To try the legendary queue king Nan Hotpot, I arrived at 4 pm and waited for the shop to open. As expected, there were already people waiting.

This shop is incredibly popular in Chongqing. The main store in the four communities is actually a small hotpot shop under a residential building, very folksy decoration, authentic!

It is a dessert shop that has been delayed by hotpot. Last time in Chengdu, our table ordered four extra-large servings of shaved ice. It was amazing, huge portion with rich toppings. Because the portion was so big, this time we each had one cup. The sticky and soft texture was super delicious; I wanted to drink more after finishing!

? [Braised Series]: Braised chicken feet, braised pig trotters, braised beef, braised pork intestines. They can be eaten directly or put in the pot. Very flavorful. ? [Double Pepper Beef]: Highly recommended. The meat is very tender and tasty. If you like spicy, don't miss it! ? [Fresh Fried Crispy Pork]: Their crispy pork is excellent. The skin is very crispy and thin, not greasy at all.

Besides, there are also beef tendons, duck blood, spicy pork ribs, etc. So happy~

When visiting Chongqing, seriously, don't miss this place. Even if you have to queue, it's worth it. Go early, go early, go early—important things must be said three times!

??? Lu Principal ???

? Lu Principal Old Hotpot · Everything Can Be Boiled (Shapingba Store)

? Address: No. 64 Yubei Road, Shapingba District

? Transportation: Metro Line 1 / Loop Line Shapingba Station Exit, walk 440 meters

Haha, this time in Chongqing I checked in at Lu Principal! I've eaten at this one several times in Chengdu, and I especially wanted to experience Chongqing's Lu Principal!

This time I went to the Shapingba store, which was also the first hotpot meal in Chongqing. After exiting the high-speed rail station, I went straight to the hotpot shop. At first glance, it looked like a miniature version of Hongya Cave, a hotpot shop with stilted building retro style, very Chongqing!

The decoration design of this place is super cool. Walking in from the entrance feels like traveling back in time. Colorful neon lights, various nostalgic signs, green and red walls, full of retro flavor, very lively. In seconds, it will blow up your social feed~

My impression of Lu Principal is not the hotpot but the desserts! Every time I eat at Lu Principal, I eat a lot of desserts, haha. This store offers more than ten kinds of free desserts for you to choose from, plus 5 different flavors of extra-large shaved ice. The appearance is amazing, and the key is it's free, very worthwhile!

I ate their signature spicy braised chicken feet, spicy braised tofu, spicy braised ribs, and luncheon meat. Their braised hotpot: the braised dishes can be eaten directly or boiled in the hotpot. I personally prefer to boil them in the hotpot since I came to eat hotpot. Next time I go to Chongqing, I'll eat here again.

My friend and I spent a full two or three hours eating here. It was so good. This restaurant is already on my list for treating friends next time, haha. Thrilling!

? Pa Second Brother Yaopian Wang Old Hotpot (Jiefangbei Store)

? Address: No. 129-131 Zou Rong Road, Level 1, World Trade Center, flat street, Shop 45

? Transportation: Metro Line 2 Linjiangmen Station Exit B, walk 90 meters

Last time, my classmate went to Chongqing and checked in this famous kidney slice hotpot. It can be called a Chongqing time-honored brand. Before going, I saw many people recommending Pa Second Brother. The Nanping store is more popular, but this time I checked in at the Jiefangbei store.

I don't know the best hotpot in Chongqing, but this store definitely deserves the title of the best kidney slice hotpot.

I went relatively late, but there were still many people in the shop. In Chongqing's night, it's right to have a proper hotpot meal.

The store name is "Yaopian Wang" (King of Kidney Slices), so you can see Pa Second Brother's confidence in his kidney slices. The kidney slices are cut evenly, the knife skill is superb, the kidney slices are tender and taste great. Eating them with the chili dry dip is absolutely thrilling!

Besides kidney slices, I recommend a few favorite dishes. ① [Cold Pot Duck Blood]: Once it floats after being put in the pot, it's ready to eat. It's tender and smooth, a must-order! ② [Homemade Luncheon Meat]: Cut thickly, solid texture, good taste, chewy. ③ [Spicy Beef]: Beef I never forget when eating hotpot. The beef is very fresh, the more you eat, the spicier it gets, the more you want to eat. ④ [Kidney Slice Partner]: As the name suggests, essential for eating kidney slices. Freshly cooked kidney slices dipped in it, spicy and delicious, absolutely comfortable. ⑤ Also, [squid], [handmade wontons], [mai ba (a type of cake)] and so on are all excellent.

This wonton is pretty good. Now I always order a serving of wonton when eating hotpot.

If you like eating kidney slices, you must check in here.

Chuan Chuan (Skewers) | A Chengdu person's first time eating Chuan Chuan in Chongqing

Hotpot restaurants can be seen everywhere in Chongqing, but Chuan Chuan shops are rare. After eating a lot of hotpot, I really wanted to try Chuan Chuan. On the last day of leaving Chongqing, I actually found a treasure Chuan Chuan shop. Next time I come to Chongqing, I must revisit it!

Times Paradise has two shops. The one I went to is the second shop, on the second floor. From downstairs, it looks inconspicuous, but once upstairs, it's a different world!

The restaurant is spacious and bright. The interior decoration is super Hong Kong retro, surrounded by various slogans and neon lights. No matter how you take a photo, it looks good. Especially suitable for photo check-ins!

The open refrigerated cabinets are misty and ethereal, with complete variety and many choices.

[9 Flavors of Palm Center Bone]: Their signature item. Since I arrived late—after one in the afternoon—the palm center bone was already sold out. My friend said it was a pity, and I must try it next time. Many flavors including spicy, garlic, pickled pepper, Sichuan pepper, etc., many choices. Mainly recommend garlic flavor.

[Beef Skewers]: Must-eat!!! I ate dozens of sticks. Really delicious, extremely tender, must-order, must-order. I feel beef skewers taste even better.

The sour plum juice drink contains ice cream, refreshing and super relieving for spiciness!

[Xiao Jun Gan (Chicken Gizzards)]: You must eat Xiao Jun Gan when eating Chuan Chuan. Crispy texture, chewy and great!

Besides palm center bone, various other meat and vegetable items are abundant. There are also multiple types of ice glutinous rice balls. After a mouthful of spicy, it's so satisfying!!

Sichuan Cuisine | The Number One Jianghu Cuisine in My Heart

After eating hotpot for several meals in Chongqing, I couldn't take it anymore. I wanted to change to some rice dishes. Many people traveling to Chongqing also have this issue. If you don't want to eat hotpot but want Sichuan cuisine, "Yang Ji Longfu" can be arranged!

This restaurant is right next to the Chongqing Guotai Arts Center, very convenient. It is close to Jiefangbei and Hongya Cave. The entrance looks very grand. Without exaggeration, this is the most exquisite and characteristic Jianghu cuisine restaurant I have seen in Chongqing. It is a well-deserved popularity king of Chongqing Jianghu cuisine!

Because we came early, and we wanted to visit a few places in the afternoon, we came to the restaurant at 11 am. There weren't many people inside, and the atmosphere was just right.

Inside is huge. The decoration is Chinese-style Republic of China style, antique and elegant, very tasteful. Wooden carved tables and chairs, lanterns everywhere, very comfortable environment!

The three of us sat in a private room by the window. That day, the weather in Chongqing was good, and sunlight came in. The service staff were also warm and attentive. I felt like I had discovered a treasure restaurant!

[National Spicy Chicken]: This store's TOP 1 signature. Bright colors, very appetizing. Fried chili and chicken cubes stir-fried with green onion and ginger. One of the most popular and classic dishes in Jianghu cuisine.

[Brown Sugar Yinmi Porridge]: I wanted to nourish my stomach after too much hotpot, so I ordered this. Thick, smooth, and sweet, very tasty, suitable for appetizing before meals.

[Mapo Tofu]: A very rice-friendly dish, authentic Sichuan flavor, generous portion. I personally love spicy tofu.

[Yang Ji Private Braised Goose]: A very exquisite and creative dish. It is served in a birdcage. I ordered it for its appearance. Ethereal, the goose meat is firm and flavorful.

Each of us ordered a bottle of the restaurant's homemade drink. It could be taken away if not finished. Not only was the portion generous but the taste was also good, very refreshing!

There were so many other dishes. If I hadn't been full, I would have kept eating. It really suits the taste of Sichuan and Chongqing people!!!

Finally, I have to say, Yang Ji Longfu is truly the facade of Chongqing Jianghu cuisine. It's excellent for treating guests or gatherings!

? Yang Ji Longfu (Jiefangbei Main Store)

? Address: No. 32 Linjiangzhi Road, Shop 7 (Intersection of Cangbai Road and Linjiangzhi Road, behind Wangfujing Department Store, next to the traffic light)

Taro Balls (Yu Yuan) | Grandpa Yage's Taro Balls, the Best Without a Doubt

The most popular taro balls in Chongqing are undoubtedly these. I specifically asked my Chongqing friends for snack recommendations before going, and all of them recommended it.

This is a small taro ball shop run by a Taiwanese grandfather. Previously, friends went specifically to Yudong to eat, but now there are branches in various business districts.

The grandfather insists on making all ingredients by hand, using no additives, using simple raw materials to create the best taste.

Handmade taro balls are more chewy. A full bowl, full of happiness for foodies!

This shop is not large, with orange as the main color, fresh and healing, in the style of old Taiwanese street shops. The price is not expensive, don't miss it.

Potato (Yangyu) | 9 out of 10 Chongqing people have eaten it

It is said that this Dingjiapo Potato hidden under a Dazu residential building has been imitated but never surpassed. This time, I made a special trip to taste it.

In the window, you can see bowls full of potatoes, tofu skin, and chili sauce. Just looking at it makes your mouth water!

There are only three ingredients here: potato slices, potato chunks, and tofu skin. Tofu skin and potatoes with the boss's secret seasoning, once you start eating, you can't stop.

Personally, I think the best are the potato chunks, soft and fluffy, very flavorful.

Potato slices are crispy and tasty, with a good texture.

Tofu skin is the most spicy-absorbing, but for heavy taste people, it might still be a bit bland, but it suits the majority. In Chongqing, it is a snack not to be missed!

Xiaomian (Noodles) | The Soul Snack of Chongqing

"Every morning, the aroma of spicy begins to permeate the streets and alleys. But at this time, the hotpot restaurants and Sichuan restaurants around the city are almost not yet open. The source comes from the noodle shops that open earliest near residential areas." — "A Bite of China"

(The picture was taken last summer vacation)

"Xiaomian is so small that it is a familiar daily element in the lives of Chongqing people; Xiaomian is so big that almost everyone in this city of millions loves it." — "A Bite of China"

It is the soul-level food of Chongqing. In the morning, you can start with a bowl of Xiaomian; late at night, you can also end with a bowl of Xiaomian. During my days in Chongqing, I ate a bowl of two-liang Xiaomian every day, wonderful~

—— Epilogue ——

The first city I traveled to in 2021 was Chongqing. What about you?
