Chongqing’s Newest Must-Visit Spot: A Stunning Azalea Sea Is About to Bloom – Keep This Guide Handy!
When many of you visit Chongqing, you tend to focus on city sightseeing in the downtown area. Little do you know that Chongqing, famous as the Mountain City, is truly picturesque with its mountains and rivers. And there’s one place that has taken root deep in my heart, and that is Jinfo Mountain!
Just a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Chongqing, Jinfo Mountain is different from other mountains. It is a typical karst tableland. At over 2,000 meters above sea level, the mountain displays unique towering cliffs and steep precipices – truly spectacular.
Having missed the azalea season before, I made sure to arrive right at the start of blooming time this year to experience another side of Jinfo Mountain—the beauty of spring~
I arranged a three-day, two-night itinerary, giving me plenty of time to fully appreciate the mountain’s many charms from top to bottom. Here’s the guide I’ve put together—be sure to save it~
Cable Car Encounters: Flower Sea and Waterfall
From the entrance to the top of Jinfo Mountain, you need to take a scenic shuttle bus plus a cable car, ascending from 700 meters to over 2,000 meters at the summit. The whole way, we were surrounded by mist and clouds, like a fairyland, eliciting gasps of awe from everyone in the bus.
And this cable car is the steepest in China in terms of vertical ascent—in short, it’s thrilling. Along the way, you can see the iconic welcoming waterfall, cascading straight down a massive rock face ahead.
The most stunning sight is from the cable car: slopes blanketed in a sea of azaleas! Mountain azaleas grow at various altitudes on Jinfo Mountain, with over 40 varieties. Due to the large elevation differences and temperature variations, the azaleas start blooming at lower altitudes from mid-April and gradually work their way up to the peak, lasting nearly a month. So for that whole month, you can immerse yourself in an azalea wonderland~
As I mentioned, Jinfo Mountain is a typical karst tableland, with vertical cliffs at the summit dropping 50 meters. The Cliff Plank Walk is carved directly into the rock face, giving you the feeling of walking on clouds. If you’re not too afraid of heights, you must experience the thrill of this cliff path!
Looking out from the Cliff Plank Walk, you’ll find Jinfo Mountain’s best views. The overlapping mountain ridges take on the tones of an ink-wash painting, so enchanting.
From the end of the plank walk, you ascend a slope to reach the true summit of Jinfo Mountain, where you’ll find the Azalea Park. As the name suggests, it’s home to ancient azalea trees that have grown for decades, forming the largest stretch of azalea blooms on the mountain. When in full flower, it turns into a sea of blossoms, a bit like a ‘rooftop garden’. This is expected around the May Day holiday, so if you have travel plans, you’ll be lucky enough to enjoy this gorgeous flower sea!
At the summit, you can spot many azalea varieties: wide-petal, tree-maple, Jinshan, trumpet, curved-tip, hemp-leaf, and more. I can’t tell them all apart—I just love the delicate pink ones~
A local specialty on Jinfo Mountain is square bamboo—you’ll see dishes made with it everywhere. The mountain has large bamboo groves, and this bamboo is crispy and tender despite its aged appearance, truly delicious, so it’s very popular. When visiting Jinfo Mountain, don’t miss exploring the bamboo forests and tasting square bamboo~
Jinfo Temple is the largest temple complex in Chongqing and one of the four great temples on Jinfo Mountain. Designed in a Tang-dynasty style, walking through the temple, you’ll have moments that feel like you’ve traveled back in time to ancient Chang’an.
At such a high elevation, in a place of natural wonder, offer a prayer for peace and safety.
When it comes to staying at Jinfo Mountain, one option is Tianxing Town at the foot of the mountain. Tianxing Town is a spot where you can stay, eat, and have fun—it’s the main tourist hub for Jinfo Mountain. The town is designed to replicate the look of an old Chongqing mountain village, making it a great place for photos with an old-world charm.
Strolling through the town amid green hills and clear waters, the laid-back atmosphere gave me a rare sense of peace—that’s probably the bliss of a Jinfo Mountain getaway. Dressing up in traditional Hanfu and snapping some photos easily fills a whole day with joy~
Visiting Jinfo Mountain, how could you miss the hot springs? These springs have a history of over a thousand years, with water naturally sourced from underground at 48°C. The water is rich in mineral salts and trace elements, very beneficial for the body!
Besides soaking in the hot springs, don’t miss the snacks at the hot spring town. Their hot-and-sour noodles are famously delicious, and this time I also discovered the wolf-tooth potatoes—crispy and packed with flavor, absolutely heavenly~ Double delight~
At the mountain foot: Tianxing Liangjiang Holiday Hotel
A very cozy hotel, with ample heating and no dampness, a balcony where you can breathe in the fresh air, and excellent service—thoughtful turndown service with milk and fruit~ It feels like home~
At the summit: Chongqing Jinfo Mountain Liangjiang Hotel
Who knew there’d be such a wonderful hotel at over 2,000 meters? Chinese-style design, spacious rooms with cozy sofas—a fantastic place to stay. Plus, the hotel food is absolutely delicious.
Stargazing Pavilion Ox Head Feast
A local specialty, accompanied by a unique ceremony, full of character and atmosphere. The beef is grilled at the center of the table, served with various soup pots. With Jinfo Mountain’s generally cool temperatures, this meal is wonderfully nourishing!
Square Bamboo Noodles
As mentioned, square bamboo is a Jinfo Mountain specialty, and these noodles are handmade by locals using a stone mill. They have a smooth, bouncy texture, and with a drizzle of chili oil, they warm both body and soul.
Summit Mutton Soup Pot
Many free-range sheep graze the mountaintop, feeding on herbal plants, so the meat is nutritious and not gamey. The soup made from them is not only tonic but also a total comfort on the chilly summit of Jinfo Mountain~
After all these recommendations for fun, food, accommodation, and relaxation, have you grasped the essence of Jinfo Mountain? In fact, Jinfo Mountain has something to offer all year round: a sea of flowers in spring, a cool retreat in summer, red leaves in autumn, and skiing in winter. How can such an amazing destination not tempt you? The upcoming May Day holiday—plan your trip now!
