For a while, work had been extremely hectic, and I hadn’t had a chance to travel and unwind for ages. As the year came to an end, my workload eased up, so I finally scheduled my annual leave and planned a leisurely getaway with my boyfriend, also to celebrate our second anniversary. I used to be crazy about ticking off trendy spots, but they all started to feel the same. So my boyfriend and I agreed to find a place away from the city hustle and enjoy a comfortable, idyllic countryside life. After some online research, we discovered this special place—Guangzhou Yi·Airport Cultural Tourism Town. We were super excited before setting off and could barely contain our anticipation. Guangzhou Yi·Airport Cultural Tourism Town is far from urban noise; here you can not only freely admire the enchanting natural scenery but also enjoy the leisure and entertainment spaces it offers, relaxing your tense body and mind.

My boyfriend and I drove from Zengcheng and arrived at 6 p.m. We had booked online in advance a guesthouse called 归阁. After parking, we went straight to check in. Before we even got close, we were completely drawn in. It’s tucked at the end of a century-old green-brick lane in the airport cultural tourism town. The design style perfectly fulfilled my vision of rural country life—so poetic.

We couldn’t wait to step inside. What greeted us were simple tables and chairs, exquisite tea sets, a compact fridge, a smart speaker, stylish lighting, forest-like fabric drapes, comfortable bedding, beautifully embroidered cushions, and paintings full of traditional Chinese aesthetics... Lying on the bed, admiring the decor, lost in music, we quietly savored our time together. The blend of modern and classical gave 归阁 a unique charm that sets it apart from other guesthouses.

Under the window, the guesthouse thoughtfully set up a tea counter. Sitting there, enjoying the view outside was so soothing—blue sky reflected in water, plus the distinctive architecture in the area—it felt like a cure for the soul. We sat at the tea counter, brewed a pot of tea, listened to music, teased each other about our embarrassing moments, and took loads of photos. Planes crossed the bright sky, and we reveled in the sweetness of being together. Life was peaceful and beautiful.

The first floor of 归阁 has a minimalist industrial-style restaurant and bar, bright and simple. It’s one of the highlights of the guesthouse, and the chef’s skills are excellent. Whether Chinese or Western cuisine, everything is a delight. Just between us, we two foodies thought the dishes were amazing! There were egg tarts I absolutely love, Macau chicken steak buns, French toast... Even my boyfriend, who is super picky about food, couldn’t stop raving! He complimented the food while eating, and the chef nearby got a bit embarrassed. He even teased me for eating too much, though he didn’t hold back himself!

While strolling around the town after dinner, we also found many other guesthouses and hotels, like 宫崎, 希迪, 电影时光, 陌野, all offering good value. Being close to Baiyun Airport, most of them provide airport pickup and drop-off services. Out-of-town visitors can call ahead to ask.

1. 宫崎酒店

Do you want to experience a Japanese-style lifestyle? Come to 宫崎酒店! Cherry blossoms, Mount Fuji, sake and other Japanese design elements are perfectly blended in. Plus, tatami mats and Japanese-style decorations in the rooms make you feel like you’re right in Japan. This hotel is full of strong Japanese flavor, with meticulous decor and excellent service—I’d give it a huge thumbs up! There’s also a 7-Eleven right downstairs, so grabbing a late-night snack is super convenient.

2. 希迪酒店

Besides complete basic facilities, 希迪酒店 has a multi-function meeting room, gym, and laundry room—very comprehensive. No worries about finding a meeting place; you can work comfortably here. The rooms are quite spacious, and in your free time, you can enjoy tea and chat in the lobby, taking a break from the busyness. The room setup is especially thoughtful for business travelers: each room has fast fiber-optic internet, high-speed Wi-Fi, smart TV, and multilingual international channels, so you’re always connected. The bright colors and novel design also give 希迪酒店 a stylish touch.

3. 电影时光

As the name suggests, this is a movie-themed guesthouse. Movie posters, vintage photos, and other film elements are everywhere, with multiple theme rooms to choose from—a real treat for movie fans! In the themed rooms, you can project a screen and watch a good movie with your partner, friends, or just enjoy some alone time. It sweeps away your worries and leaves you in a great mood.

4. 陌野酒店

Grey-white tones and minimalist industrial style create a simple and unique hotel design. Here, you can take in the surroundings through large floor-to-ceiling windows. Or in the morning, draw the curtains, bask in the sunshine, and brew a cup of coffee while gazing at the scenery—a lovely start to the day. Warm-colored furniture and spliced flooring give a homey feel during your travels, while a bright-colored chair adds a pop of color. Comfortable bedding ensures quality sleep and reflects the hotel’s sincere care. The big windows bring you closer to nature—blue sky, white clouds, clear water...

After a night’s rest, we two foodies walked from the guesthouse to the town’s food street. Through two days of on-the-spot tasting, we’re recommending a few must-visit eateries!

1. 开得胜

开得胜 specializes in Cantonese specialties and snacks. Their signature beef offal brand “牛状元” (Beef Champion) really surprised me. The aroma of the beef offal first drew me in, and when I walked over, it was all fragrant beef offal. They put rice noodles into boiling broth, scoop them into a bowl, then add a pot of beef offal on top, and pour a ladleful of beef offal soup over it to perfectly combine everything, with a sprinkle of coriander. One bite—pure satisfaction!

2. 惠心私房菜

With the rise of private home-style dining, people are increasingly drawn to unique private kitchens. I’m one of them—every city I visit, I try one or two private kitchens to taste the local flavors, as their unique, home-cooked taste helps me understand the city’s cuisine faster. As a Cantonese restaurant, 惠心私房菜 has a strong Cantonese-style decor. The plating uses the most common stainless steel plates found in Guangdong families, giving a strong sense of homey ceremony. The rooftop on the second floor has outdoor seating overlooking the town, and you can also barbecue there. We sat on the rooftop, having drinks and grilled meat, feeling that life is just wonderful.

3. 什间·哼哈大排档

We stumbled upon this open-air food stall by chance. That evening, the place we wanted to try had already closed, so we were heading back to the hotel when the irresistible aroma from this stall pulled us in. Its signage is eye-catching, with a few round tables out front. When the lights come on at night, it’s full of lively atmosphere: sounds of sizzling woks, chatter, clinking glasses... The cuisine mainly features Cantonese and Sichuan dishes. Fiery Sichuan flavors meet mild Cantonese style, creating an interesting contrast. But if you can’t handle spice, better skip the Sichuan dishes—you might end up in tears! My favorite is the stir-fried pork with chili—the meat is so flavorful, spicy and great with rice. The stall is still in its trial operation phase and expects to officially open in mid-to-late December. Interested friends can come and try it then!

4. 一个金子吧

As night fell and the streetlights came on, my boyfriend suggested checking out 一个金子吧. I had been looking forward to this place while researching. The dim lighting, drinks, music, and décor all blend into a unique ambiance. Upon entering, the first thing that caught my eye was a huge bar cabinet, filled with cocktails, whiskies, red wines—all kinds of fine brews. The bar is divided into a gold area and a red area, with the gold area exclusively for ladies and the blue area for gentlemen. We sipped our drinks and watched the lively crowd jumping and dancing, feeling our mood lift. At 一个金子吧, let’s head towards a glittering tomorrow!

There are many more delicious places worth trying, but due to time constraints, we had to leave those opportunities for next time. Fellow travelers can explore more restaurants—there’s plenty of great food here. Foodies, come and check them out!

Additionally, culture and arts are a major feature of Guangzhou Yi·Airport Cultural Tourism Town. With the slogan “Revitalizing the countryside with culture and arts,” the town has created several distinctive cultural check-in spots. This time we experienced the 24-Hour Late-Night Bookstore and 翼空间·春睡画院.

The 24-Hour Late-Night Bookstore stays open around the clock, with reading rooms, rest areas, and a children’s room, catering to anyone needing to study or rest at any time. We learned that the building housing it has over a hundred years of history, deep in heritage. Inside, it incorporates many intangible cultural heritage elements like lion heads and clay sculptures—definitely not to be missed! Rows of books against a simple backdrop, retro design, and introductions to Lingnan cultural items create a very cultured atmosphere. P.S. The photos are really nice here, but remember to keep quiet and not disturb others.

翼空间·春睡画院—we found out from the introduction that it’s a renovated ancestral hall. We were stunned because it’s so cool! My boyfriend, an art student, had been looking forward to this place and was immediately captivated as soon as he entered. The gallery is spacious and grand; I heard they regularly host various art exhibitions. If you’re interested, check the event schedule before visiting. The art museum features many landscape paintings, abstract works, and more. We admired many paintings, and the interior design also fascinated me—so trendy and stylish. I heard the design even won an award.

By the way, the streets here are filled with unique buildings and sculptures, and the color combinations can add brilliance to your photos! The sunset glow combined with the centuries-old green-brick houses makes for photo ops that can produce blockbuster images in minutes. Even the small objects in the park can become interactive photo props: little flowers, grasses, chairs, tables, glass railings... all can be a highlight in your shots. I held my boyfriend’s arm, looking at our reflections in the water, the picture harmonious and beautiful, wishing time would freeze.

Happy times are always short, and our weekend trip came to an end! Oh yes, you can buy souvenirs here too. I picked up many special small items to bring back to my family, and they loved them—these items carry great sentimental value. Guangzhou Yi·Airport Cultural Tourism Town meets all your needs, from dining and lodging to fun. I hope my recommendation can serve as a little reference for those planning to visit.

Guangzhou Yi·Airport Cultural Tourism Town is right near the airport, very convenient by subway or taxi.
