- Shamian, Yongqingfang & Enning Road:

· Yongxing Siu Mei – roast meats (avg. ¥71/person): Long renowned in Guangzhou, their [roast goose] and [char siu] are legendary signatures. They start selling at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. – if you don’t line up early, you might not get any... Is this “hunger marketing”? The owner doesn’t bother with such tricks; when the goods are genuinely top-notch, there’s no worry whether the regulars will buy.

→ Take-out only, no seating. Grabbing a box meal on the street is part of the experience (the roast meats can be a bit salty on their own without rice)...

· Zhanji Restaurant – Cantonese dishes (avg. ¥69/person): [Cantonese poached chicken] steamed-style requires the best chicken breed and perfect heat; the bones still show a hint of pink (due to the cooking method), and the meat is tender, never dry. As for whether it has that “chicken flavour”, that depends on the breed… Guangzhou locals often choose Zhanjiang chicken, Qingyuan chicken, or Sanhuang chicken, hehe… these can be pricier. [Five-Willow Fried Egg] is all about sweet and sour – a homestyle appetiser, though Guangzhou families actually rarely make it at home 😛. [Pig’s trotter] is braised to a sticky skin and soft meat, but if you don’t like gnawing on bones, it’s less recommended, haha.

→ For two or three people, ordering all three signature dishes at once isn’t recommended – first, you probably can’t finish them; second, the strong flavour of the five-willow egg will clash with the delicate taste of the poached chicken…

- Along Yanjiang West Road & Haizhu Bridge:

· Qingxin Chicken & Shatin Pigeon Shop (Financial Branch) – Cantonese dishes (avg. ¥68/person): If you’ve ever binged classic Hong Kong dramas, you’ve surely been low-key tempted by [Shatin pigeon] – that legendary late-night dish... When the pigeon is roasted just right and eaten piping hot, the juices really burst, leaving a lingering fragrance on the palate and fingers... You’ll likely find yourself licking your fingertips clean. (Going off topic, going off topic...) Let’s get back to the house specialty – Qingxin chicken... Carefully selected breed, soaked in white master stock then plunged into an ice bath, resulting in a refreshingly smooth skin and tender meat. Tempted yet?

· Liang’s Kitchen (South Huadong Road Branch) – Cantonese dishes (avg. ¥90/person): A family-run Cantonese eatery, their [deep-fried pig intestine] is outstanding 👍. Many Guangzhou lads make a special trip here for supper just for this. The intestine is thoroughly marinated, then deep-fried to a crisp outside and tender inside – simply superb 😋. I recommend trying it as is: the intestines are cleaned so well there’s no off-flavour... the pure braised taste is already distinctive. Adding sauce makes it a bit too sour and overpowering. [Tangerine peel ribs] are made with real dried tangerine peel; every bite carries that citrusy fragrance... How do I know they use real peel? Because the chef 👨‍🍳 tosses it in when cooking, so the aromatic fried peel lands on the plate – and I got to taste it 🤫.

→ The signature dishes come in small portions and are a little pricey. If you dine upstairs, be prepared for a very steep staircase; otherwise, they’ll set up a table right on the street...

- Beijing Road & Dafo Temple:

· Fulin Food House – Cantonese dishes (avg. ¥78/person): A time-honoured Cantonese eatery with 30 years of fame, no ads or rankings needed – word‑of‑mouth among locals keeps this affordable favourite standing strong along Beijing Road’s bustling Huifu East Food Street. Their signature [whole crispy‑skin pig’s trotter] and [blanched beef slices] are practically ordered by every table!

→ The crispy trotter has gone up from ¥68 to ¥75, but compared to a certain Western bistro’s ¥130 version, it tastes better and is far more wallet‑friendly... Sure, some will criticise me – the dining environments aren’t even in the same league – but Guangzhou folks only care about taste and value, okay?

· Xingyuan Restaurant – Cantonese‑style da pai dong (avg. ¥69/person): Open until 2 a.m., this place holds an indispensable seat in Guangzhou’s late‑night scene... What matters most for a midnight snack is ‘wild flavour’. Their [salted egg yolk squid tentacles] marry savoury richness with a chewy bite – perfect with drinks. The [dry‑fried beef chow fun] has superb wok hei, the rice noodles thin, the beef silky... Wash it down with two bottles of chilled Zhujiang draft beer, and that’s pure bliss ❤️.

→ It’s not far from the Pearl River waterfront. After supper, if you’re not ready to head back, take a stroll along the river and enjoy the breeze... (Do watch out for safety ⚠️)

- Dongshankou & Xinhepu:

· Lede Zizai Black Bean Chicken – local chicken hot pot (avg. ¥50/person): Haha, that’s right, I’m recommending chicken again 🐔 (as the saying goes, no chicken leaves Guangdong alive 😜). The star here is their black bean chicken; personally, I love it with coconut milk – as long as you time the cooking right, the chicken picks up that sweet coconut aroma, creating a whole new flavour. (Hot‑pot‑cooked chicken will be a bit tougher than poached, so choosing the right broth and watching the cooking time are crucial.)

· Fenfang Dessert – Cantonese desserts (avg. ¥24/person): Compared to the fame of Wenming Road’s dessert street, Fenfang is like that old wine shop tucked deep in an alley, quietly serving the neighbourhood... Their “tong but luck” (sweet glutinous rice balls) holds countless childhood memories for Dongshan’s young masters and misses? (Memories aside... those rice balls are still very sweet... easy to tire of after a few bites.) And their beef brisket with rice noodle rolls rivals any hip eatery’s version today...

- Huacheng Square (Canton Tower + Guangdong Museum + Opera House + Guangzhou Library New Building):

· Changlai Xiaoju – Cantonese meals (avg. ¥73/person): Built up in recent years on word‑of‑mouth and value, they often have special discount set menus for new customers – perfect for travellers wanting to try something new. As regulars, if we want to snag a deal we go for their evening/supper set.

· Dian Du De – Cantonese dim sum (avg. ¥89/person): Cantonese dim sum is famous across the nation, with rice noodle rolls, har gow, siu mai, chicken feet, youtiao, red rice noodle rolls, beef balls, and congee with various meats... an endless list 😛. Compared to high‑end teahouses, Dian Du De offers decent quality at very approachable prices.

→ A trip to Guangzhou wouldn’t feel complete without enjoying “yum cha” with a pot of tea and a couple of dim sum baskets... Ending with Cantonese dim sum is my wish that all visitors to my hometown will fall in love with its earthy, everyday flavours ❤️
