Kyoto Hidden Gem: Nishijin Living Museum – Tondaya
Kyoto cultural experience journey at 'Tondaya'
It seems many people in China haven't discovered this hidden gem yet! A reservation-only museum that combines guided visits, tea ceremony 🍵, kimono 👘, flower arrangement, kaiseki cuisine, maiko performances, and various other Japanese cultural experiences.
'Tondaya' is different from ordinary museums — it is the kimono wholesaler run by the Tanaka family for generations. Originally, the Tanaka family ran a currency exchange business in Fushimi (a city south of Kyoto) during the Edo period (1603–1867).
Due to the 1868 Battle of Toba-Fushimi, 'Tondaya' had to relocate to Nishijin, where the kimono industry was developing at that time, and the current house was built in 1885.
'Tondaya' was designated as a National Tangible Cultural Property in 1999, and also designated as an Important Cityscape Building by Kyoto City in 2007.
Currently, 'Tondaya' is open to the public as the Nishijin Living Museum, aiming to promote education about traditional Kyoto lifestyle and culture.
