Autumn Maple Season: Drinking Coffee in Osaka and Kyoto
On this trip to Japan, I only stayed in Osaka and Kyoto, making sure to visit at least one cafe every day. Sometimes I went to two, and even had coffee at 6 PM—I really put in the effort. Since I was traveling with someone who only drinks lattes, I mostly visited cafes that serve espresso-based drinks, so I hardly experienced any traditional Japanese kissaten. But that’s fine.
Let’s start, in no particular order.
Blue Bottle Coffee was just okay, but this one was a limited-edition coffee cart in collaboration with a temple. You could sip your coffee while sitting in front of the exquisite dry landscape garden at Sairai-in Temple—not to be missed.
On the way to Nanzenji Temple, I passed another Blue Bottle, but it was packed with customers, even more people taking photos, turning it into a tourist spot. So I quickly escaped.
The staff at Blue Hat seemed to be a Taiwanese sister, who spoke a few words of Chinese and then drifted away. The shop was spacious, the coffee was good, and the canelé was even better. They also had baked goods, so you could have breakfast there too.
A cute neighborhood cafe with their bakery across the street. After ordering coffee on one side, you could run over to pick out bread. The bread was better than the coffee.
Looking back, this Kansai coffee trip seemed even better than the one in Tokyo? At least I remember a few that were surprisingly delicious, and a few that weren't great but looked beautiful.
If you like it, please give a like, star, and follow. Thank you!
