Discover the Most British Centenary Shopping Centre in London
London, the most charming fashion capital of the world. If you miss London's fashion, you miss the whole world.
The most upscale fashion here is always full of stories. For example, the Burlington Arcade, a beloved British fashion landmark for British elites, traces its story back 200 years.
The Burlington Arcade was built in the 17th century by the noble Lord George Cavendish. His residence, Burlington House, was a magnificent palace with luxurious and spacious gardens, now home to the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1819, Lord George Cavendish's wife, Lady Cavendish, commissioned architect Samuel Wares to build a covered shopping arcade along the west side of their garden. At that time, it served only aristocrats and celebrities. Over the two centuries of British history, the Burlington Arcade became the first boutique department store in London, surviving events such as the Great Fire of London and World War II. It is not only a London landmark rich in history and culture but also a British architectural and heritage treasure.
The guards at the Burlington Arcade, known as Beadles, are a distinctive feature and the world's oldest and smallest private security force—they have been present since the Arcade's founding in 1819, ten years before the Metropolitan Police Force. The original five Beadles were selected from Lord George Cavendish's regiment, the 10th Light Dragoons.
Today, the chief Beadle, Mark Lord, leads the other Beadles in serving the continuous stream of visitors. They wear 18th-century aristocratic military uniforms—double-breasted long coats and high hats with tassels—appearing very gentlemanly and courteous. They are happy to guide visitors and share the arcade's history and culture.
Today, the Burlington Arcade is not only Britain's oldest luxury shopping centre but also a cultural heritage gem in London's Mayfair, with 46 world-class boutiques and 4 million visitors each year.
2020 was a special year. After the COVID-19 outbreak in the UK and the lockdown easing on July 4 in London, the Burlington Arcade strictly adhered to government health regulations, implementing daily deep cleaning measures. Each boutique currently allows only two customers at a time, and many have VIP lounges on the second floor to ensure private shopping. In the Arcade, you'll see lush green plants arranged along the centre of the walkway to help maintain social distancing while you shop.
The Burlington Arcade welcomes you with the utmost professionalism and safety.
