Eltham Palace: History

First built in 1305, the historic Eltham Palace has long been favored by royalty and the wealthy. Before the 16th century, it was a royal residence where the young Prince Henry (later Henry VIII) spent much of his youth. During the Tudor period, the palace was often used by the royal family for Christmas celebrations.

In 1933, millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld of the British upper class acquired the land and commissioned the finest architects and designers of the time to build a luxurious, ultra-modern fashion palace, which is the current Eltham Palace.

In 1944, the Courtaulds handed the palace over to the Royal Army Education Corps; in 1995, English Heritage took over Eltham Palace and eventually opened it to the public.

Architectural Features

Inspired by the architecture of Hampton Court Palace, Eltham Palace has a Renaissance-style exterior while the interior is pure modernist decoration. Its entrance hall features a glass dome that allows external light to illuminate the entryway. The palace's dining room and living room, as well as Virginia's bedroom and suite, showcase the advanced design technology of the time, forming a perfectly coordinated whole. The abandoned walls in the garden, the 15th-century bridge across the moat, and the magnificent great hall have been well-preserved, highlighting the original palace's character.

Highlights of Eltham Palace

The entrance hall was meticulously crafted by Swedish designer Rolf Engstromer, with warm sunlight streaming in, giving visitors a feeling of walking into the light.

Not only does the mansion boast the most exquisite design style of its time, but it also featured the most advanced technology, including a central-heated bedroom for the Courtaulds' pet lemur.

Virginia Courtauld's walk-in closet contains many exquisite dresses, hats, and accessories from the 1930s. You can even try on some replica vintage items to see your retro look.

The garden of Eltham Palace covers 19 acres, and the medieval elements retained from its predecessor, such as the moat and ruins, have become highlights of the palace. Moreover, there are many ponds and waterfalls leading to the rock garden by the moat, a captivating rose garden, and a children's outdoor play area, each with its own characteristics.
