Tower of London

Everyone knows Tower Bridge, known as the gateway to London, but have you visited the Tower of London, from which it gets its name? This complex on the north bank of the Thames has served as a castle, royal palace, treasury, arsenal, mint, prison, and zoo, earning it the nickname 'the British Forbidden City'.

The Tower of London was founded in 1066 by William the Conqueror as a riverside fortress. In the 13th century, King Henry III and Edward I expanded the tower, adding a moat and more defensive structures. After the 19th century, the Tower was designated as the Royal Mint, becoming one of the safest places in England, where the crown kept its most precious jewels and property. Today, the Tower's guards have transformed into friendly tourism operators, and the Tower itself is a major tourist attraction in the capital.

Within this 12-acre complex, the White Tower, completed in 1100, is the most prominent. It stands 32.6 meters tall, with four turrets at the corners forming a shape of three squares and one round. It is the most important, oldest, and strongest building in the Tower. Inside, there is a spiral staircase leading to the top, and a crypt of St John's Chapel below. The Crown Jewels exhibition in the White Tower displays crowns, scepters, and royal jewels from the 17th century onwards – definitely worth a visit.
