The Notting Hill Carnival (NHC) is London's annual grand event, attracting tourists and locals from all over the world.

The carnival usually takes place in summer, welcoming warm weather and holidays. The venue is colourfully decorated with various amusement rides, entertainment activities and food stalls, ensuring everyone can find something they enjoy.

A young man in colourful costume took part in the Notting Hill Carnival parade in London, UK. His name is Claudia Jones. He was born in 1915 in Trinidad, a British colony in the Caribbean. When he was nine, he moved to the US to reunite with his parents. In 1936, he joined the American Communist Party. During the era of McCarthyism after World War II, Jones was imprisoned multiple times and expelled from the US in 1955. He then moved to Notting Hill, a Caribbean immigrant community in west London.

In 1958, Jones founded the 'West Indian Gazette', calling on colonial people to unite for independence, racial equality and world peace. The following year, there were racial violent incidents against black people in Notting Hill. In response, Jones organised a walking event in the area to promote the outstanding culture of the Caribbean. In August that year, he initiated the first indoor Caribbean carnival in the UK, advocating racial integration and unity. After Jones died in 1964, the event evolved into a street carnival, later known across Europe as the Notting Hill Carnival.

To commemorate the founder and his original intention, the UK government installed memorial plaques at two locations in Notting Hill on 22 August 2008.

MAS Bands

MAS bands are an indispensable part of the carnival. They produce and provide costumes for NHC. A new theme is introduced each year, and the public is welcome to purchase costumes and join the band to participate in 'MAS Bands' along the carnival parade route. Each MAS band is evaluated by official judges at judging points (south of Great Western Road) over two days. The list of winning MAS bands will be announced on social media.

Steelbands

In the mid-1960s, steelpans were the first sound to be played on the streets of Notting Hill. Russell Henderson and his band were invited by Laheem Laslett to play at a children's street gathering she organised. Steelpans remain an important element of the Notting Hill Carnival to this day.

Calypso

Calypso first arrived in Britain in 1917 with the British West Indies Regiment stationed on the south coast. However, this Caribbean music genre gained widespread exposure in the UK on 22 June 1948, when Trinidadian calypso singer Lord Kitchener performed a calypso song 'London is the Place for Me' live upon arriving at Tilbury Docks from the ship Empire Windrush. A journalist asked him to sing a calypso song, and he improvised 'London is the Place for Me', bringing calypso music to a British audience. Thus, the UK calypso scene was born. Today, the highlight of the British calypso scene is the 'London Calypso Tent'.

Sound Systems

The roots of Jamaican culture and reggae music led to the introduction of sound systems to NHC in 1973. Now, sound systems have developed for over 30 years in Jamaica, catering to different musical tastes. The Jamaican sound system scene includes many static sound systems offering a variety of music styles. These sound systems cover genres from Dub, Rare Groove and House to Jungle, Samba, Blues and Hip Hop.

Brazilian Bands

Brazilian bands were first introduced to the Notting Hill Carnival in 1984 by the London School of Samba. Their performances along the parade route are highly popular. Elaborate dance moves and energetic, synchronised live drumming delight audiences.

Live Stages

Live stage performances are the focus of the carnival, where you can enjoy shows from a range of excellent artists. This includes local artists, traditional calypso musicians and superstar performances. In addition, there is a dedicated stage for families and children, featuring children's entertainment and interactive performances. During the carnival, this community becomes a popular destination for young families and an excellent spot to watch the parade.

The carnival offers cuisines from around the world, with a major focus on diverse Caribbean foods. Jamaican Jerk Chicken is one of the most popular, with the aroma of grilled meat giving the Notting Hill Carnival its unique scent. Trinidadian bread and Guyanese Pepperpot are also must-try items. If you don't eat meat, most stalls also offer vegetarian options. With over 300 stalls to choose from, you can enjoy some traditional dishes or try something new.
