GDIF was founded in 1996 by its artistic director Bradley Hemmings as an independent festival. It initially evolved from the former Greenwich Festival and later became a cross-river festival. Starting as a small-scale arts project, its goal was to host a grand event combining art performances, music, dance, and theater in the historically and culturally distinct areas of Greenwich and Docklands, providing high-quality artistic experiences for local residents and visitors. "The Afrinauts" is a team of curious visitors from another world who land in the Thamesmead Docklands, inviting the audience to a spectacular dance party combining circus performance, storytelling, and sound system culture. The show features new music created by UK grime artist Afrikan Boy, co-created with quantum poet Oneness Sankara, blending West African folklore, fantasy, and sci-fi elements.
The Air Between Us

Location: Greenwich Park
This spectacular aerial performance will take place on the hilltop of Greenwich Park. The show will be performed by award-winning disabled artist Rodney Bell and highly acclaimed dancer/choreographer Chloe Loftus. With their different cultures and experiences, Chloe and Rodney allow the audience to appreciate how balance and harmony can coexist, like planets orbiting each other, drawn by each other's energy. This UK debut from the Aotearoa, New Zealand group will land directly on the GDIF stage.
Cygnus

Location: Royal Victoria Dock
Twelve swans will perform a poetic ballet on the water of Royal Victoria Dock. As night falls, this mysterious and beautiful installation floats on the calm water, combining robotics and romanticism, forming incredible shapes against a backdrop of magical light, sound, and music.
The Architect
Performed by: GDIF in partnership with the Actors Touring Company, supported by the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation.
"The Architect" is an immersive theatrical journey conceived by Mojisola Adebayo, Roy Williams, and Matthew Xia, and co-created with Bola Agbaje, Dexter Flanders, Vanessa Macauley, and XANA artists. The audience will board an iconic red bus and travel across southeast London, exploring how to create a blueprint for the future after the brutal murder of Stephen Lawrence. The play is co-produced by the Actors Touring Company and GDIF, in collaboration with the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation.
Bouncing Narratives
Dates: September 9 & 10
Location: Canary Wharf
This immersive performance takes place in and around a shipping container with a trampoline roof. A series of playful images, sounds, and movements evoke experiences of joy, trauma, and fragility, exploring how past experiences keep returning to consciousness. The audience can choose to sit under the trampoline or watch from outside.
