July 2022: Athens + Santorini, a 5-day free trip for four, leisurely and comfortable ^_^
Athens, the host of the first Olympic Games and the 2004 Olympics, a city that houses 35% of the country's population, has a dense population in the main urban area with tightly packed houses. The summer here is hot and dry, but that doesn't stop us from chasing blue skies and clear waters, la la la.
1. Essential items to bring: sunglasses, sun hat, sun-protective clothing or arm sleeves, sunscreen, water
It's best to buy water at supermarkets; there is no water sold at the Acropolis, and drinks start at 5 euros.
2. Airport to city center: about 1 hour by car, Uber taxi 36-40 euros, subway tickets available in multiple languages, single ticket 9.9 euros.
3. Food: Chinese cuisine--Mingyue Lou is reasonably priced and tastes authentic; non-Chinese--Google Maps ratings above 4.5 are generally good. There is a square in the Ancient Agora of Athens where cherries are 1.19-1.99 euros/kg. We went to the northern part to eat Greek food, which was quite authentic (menu as shown in the picture), and the liver was delicious.
4. Accommodation: Recommended to stay in the city center, around the area between Syntagma Square and the two metro stations near the Acropolis, convenient to everywhere and close to the attractions. Hotels only allow check-in after 3:00 PM. (We left our luggage at the Chinese restaurant Mingyue Lou.)
5. Transportation: The subway is fine except for the expensive trip to the airport (9.9 euros); the tour bus is negotiable. We bought a 2-day pass for 4 people at 18 euros each. Some top decks of the buses have sunshades, some don't, but you can enjoy the breeze and scenery. There are audio guides in several languages via earphones. The bus stops at each attraction for photos or getting off to explore.
6. Ticket prices: Acropolis 20 euros; it's not recommended to buy the combined ticket with the Temple of Zeus. Tour bus: 3 lines cover the main attractions of Athens, and you can bargain with the ticket seller. We paid 18 euros per person for 2 days.
Recommended duration: 2 days
Flight check-in: Try to check in online; airport check-in may incur fees. We came from Prague and paid 5 euros per person for check-in. In Greece, you can use a QR code from your phone to board.
Our itinerary: Around the Acropolis - Roman Agora - Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens - Kifisia (for Greek food) - Acropolis - Temple of Zeus - Three tour bus routes (basically covering all Athens attractions) - Syntagma Square - free time in the evening
PS: Keep an eye on your belongings, beware of pickpockets, travel in groups, and don't accept free bracelets offered on the street.
Blue-domed churches, white-washed houses, seagulls, blue sky, ships, scooters... Aegean Sea, here I come!
1. Airport to Fira town: about 1 hour by car, taxi within 5 km costs 30+ euros; local bus is very cheap, ticket prices 1.2-1.8 euros. Need to bring small change, buy tickets with cash at the scene. From Fira to the airport is not a detour, about 10 minutes to the airport.
2. Food: Chinese cuisine--Yixiang Ju (Yi Xiang Ju) has authentic taste, you can quietly ask the waiter to change money; Aisa Club has large portions and there is an overseas guy who speaks Chinese to take orders; non-Chinese--Google Maps ratings above 4.5.
3. Accommodation: Recommended to stay in the central location of Fira, where many local buses start. You can take a bus north to Oia for sunset, or south to Red Beach.
4. Transportation: Local buses are great, ticket prices 1.6-2.2 euros; scooters require an EU license or a recognized Chinese license with a translation, rental about 50-100 euros.
Recommended duration: 2 days
Our itinerary: Fira town - Cliff path (blue-domed church, sea) - Oia town (sunset) - Fira shopping - Red Beach
