Day 2: Museum Island -- 3.5 museums in one day
Planned to visit three museums in one day, ended up visiting three and a half. Among the five museums, except for the two with Chinese explanations which you can view more carefully, for the other three you can just pick any one and take a quick look.
1. Pergamon Museum
2. Old Museum
3. New Museum
4. Bode Museum
5. Berlin Cathedral
6. James Simon Gallery
7. Old National Gallery
8. Humboldt Forum
9. Unter den Linden
10. German Historical Museum
11. Neue Wache
12. Humboldt University
First, the Pergamon Museum, the most famous and with Chinese audio guide, mainly about West Asian culture, especially Mesopotamia. When browsing inside, you always hear words like Mesopotamia, ancient Babylon, Hammurabi, thousands of years. A flash of inspiration: maybe Jay Chou's 'Love Before the Common Era' was inspired here. Then I posted a WeChat moment with the caption: 'Priests, temples, battles, arrows - whose past? Excavated after dozens of centuries, still clearly visible.' Anyway, this museum is really impressive and worth a visit.
Second, the Old Museum, just to the left of Berlin Cathedral. The faded stone columns and faded gilt letters in front of the portico show its sense of history and status, so it should be worth a visit. This museum mainly focuses on sculptures, especially from the Greek period, so many goddesses are wearing sandals; I've seen many bloggers mention this sandal meme. There are many headless pieces, which further show its historical sense. Another blogger mentioned there is a special exhibition area inside, but actually it's nothing much, not worth seeing. This museum has no Chinese audio guide, so just a quick glance to improve aesthetic appreciation.
Third, the New Museum, the second most worth seeing museum, with Chinese audio guide. The New Museum now mainly focuses on Egyptian culture. The bust of Nefertiti is the treasure of the museum. After more than 3,000 years, it is still lifelike. Displayed alone in a room with a circular dome, the lighting is perfect. Unfortunately, no photography allowed, so after leaving the room I took a photo with a telephoto lens. There are also several sculptures of Nefertiti in the museum, worth seeing too. More about Egyptian life, also worth a visit.
Fourth, the Bode Museum. The entrance arcade is quite nice. Mainly Byzantine period works. I didn't plan to explore it thoroughly anyway, so after just a short while it was about to close. Didn't see much Byzantine characteristics, so maybe it doesn't even count as half.
After visiting four museums, go to Berlin Cathedral to take some photos and enjoy the dusk scenery. The white walls of the James Simon Gallery can produce particularly pure images. Pass by the Old National Gallery. Then go to the Humboldt Forum to see a few exhibitions. Finally, along Unter den Linden, take night photos all the way, from Berlin Cathedral, bypassing the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag, and return to accommodation. Passed by the German Historical Museum, Neue Wache and the sculpture inside - Mother with Her Dead Son, Humboldt University and Humboldt Forum.
End of Day 2.
