The Golden Route of the Great Northwest—Dunhuang Stop

Today I’ll introduce you to Dunhuang along the Great Northwest route.

Two days is plenty for visiting Dunhuang.

Next, let me tell you how to visit it with the least hassle!!!

We hired a local driver in Dunhuang because some attractions are quite far apart, and hiring a car offers good value.

The driver was recommended by a friend. He was a really nice person.

Today he took us to the Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Moon Spring, and the Mogao Caves.

First, let’s talk about the Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Moon Spring.

Opening hours: 5:00 AM; closing time: 10:00 PM.

There are plenty of activities: camel riding, sand sliding, desert motorcycles, archery, etc.

Since I had never ridden a camel, I had to try it here. Wearing a little red dress, the photos turned out stunning. But the camels really smell bad. (Since we’re already here, wouldn’t you be letting down this desert if you didn’t ride a camel?)

Best time to visit: afternoon, to avoid the midday heat and also catch the incredible sunset. Most importantly, get some great selfies. Two angles: climb to the top of the sand dune for a bird’s-eye view of Crescent Moon Spring, or get close and shoot at eye level. (Suggest wearing bright clothing or a long dress, especially a red dress!)

Our driver arranged everything including food and accommodation. The accommodation price was cheaper than booking online. As for food, he took us to places that are cheap and authentic. And most importantly, it was super, super, super delicious!!!

The driver was really witty and funny, keeping us laughing the whole way. He told us in advance what to prepare, and when we left, he even gave us a box of local fruits as a gift. Along the way, he often treated us to apricot peel water. We felt a bit embarrassed.

Meeting such a driver while traveling is truly touching. Highly recommend him to everyone.

Now let’s talk about the Mogao Caves.

When looking at these historic relics, it feels like seeing the once glorious Dunhuang. In August 2019, even President Xi visited the Mogao Caves to experience the charm of Dunhuang culture.

There are three ticket categories, all requiring advance booking to enter. Each group is limited to about 20 people. The exterior of the Mogao Caves is a nine-story red building, and inside stands a 35-meter-tall Buddha, which is truly awe-inspiring.

(Selfie tip: Use panorama mode vertically.)

Also, there are many caves, so you can quietly admire the murals and statues. There is also the Library Cave, which is said to have been discovered by a Taoist priest during cleaning. It’s mysterious and impressive, showcasing the ingenuity and wisdom of the ancients.

Practical tips:

1. The sun radiation is strong with extreme UV. Always wear sunscreen and stay hydrated.

2. When riding camels, do not feed or tease them arbitrarily. You can ask the camel guide to take photos (for a fee).

3. It’s recommended to rent shoe covers or sand gaiters. Do not walk barefoot on the sand to avoid burns.

4. Keep your belongings safe.

In summer, people love to play in water, but the desert is also fun with its soft, fine sand. Unfortunately, there is no big desert in my hometown.

Today I had a date with a camel. Ha ha, because the camel behind kept rubbing against my leg. What are you trying to do? Ha ha. I suggest long clothes, long pants, and tall socks to keep sand out—also sun-proof and convenient. But as a dress lover, I wore a dress for photos.

Next time I’ll introduce our second day’s check-in spots.
