Speed and Passion: A Guide to Off-Roading in Dunhuang Yardang
In the northwest, you can take in snow-capped mountains, deserts, Gobi, grasslands, and lakes, experiencing a blend of vastness, wildness, grandeur, and gentleness all in one. Located west of the northwest, Dunhuang Ghost City, eroded by wind and rain and with no resistance, has landscapes as eerie as ghosts. When the wind blows, the wailing sounds seem like its hysterical cries over thousands of years.
During the day, from a distance, mirages in the desert look like vast, misty seas, with the entire Yardang Ghost City seeming to float within them. At dusk, the mirages fade, and the entire Yardang Ghost City is enveloped. Under the glow of the sunset, it appears resplendent and even more mysterious and solemn.
The power of time and the wonders of nature have created the maze-like Dunhuang Yardang landform. It is majestic, exquisitely shaped, and rich in content, making it a rare geological wonder.
In such a vast landscape, does it also call for a bold way of travel to unleash infinite possibilities? One answer is off-road vehicles, which can provide an experience of speed and passion.
Off-road vehicles not only have a rugged and wild appearance but also strong off-road capability, allowing us to explore the unknown Yardang world.

II. Start Experiencing the South Zone Features!
1. Internet-Famous Road
Only by experiencing it personally can you appreciate its beauty. Especially when riding an off-road vehicle roaring down, the feeling of freedom and abandon, the anticipation in every small curve that makes you hold your breath, and after passing through, the exhilarating feeling is indescribable and leaves you wanting more.
Below the internet-famous road is the scenic area landmark Alien, shaped like an alien gazing into the distance.
Of course, the internet-famous road also passes the Southern Route High Point โ the best sunset viewing spot besides the West Sea Fleet in the north zone.
1. South Zone Vegetation
Vegetation is extremely common in mild and humid environments, but in the desert it shows extraordinary preciousness and tenacious vitality. This is inseparable from the climate and geological structure of the scenic area. The Yardang scenic area has an arid desert climate, with much wind and sand but little rain and snow, high evaporation, no surface water in the geopark, and the ancient river channel of the Shule River passes through the south of the park. The ancient river channel of the Shule River was once covered with vegetation. Over the years, wind and sand caused sand grains to be intercepted, forming the sand mound grass landscapes seen today.
On the tour of the north zone, you may have heard guides mention the sparse Yardang vegetation in the distance, and yearned to see it. In the south zone, this is realized. Here are camel thorn, saxoul, reeds, cynomorium, and other plants, adding a touch of green. Especially these sand mound grass landscapes are unique and have a special desert charm.
Warm Tip: Cynomorium in the scenic area is a protected plant and cannot be dug up arbitrarily. Other plants also need protection; just enjoy the view.
1. Rich Yardang Formations
Strolling through the north zone of Yardang, you will find that the Yardang formations are relatively concentrated, large in scale, and most have names, such as Golden Lion Welcoming Guests, Sphinx, Hero Pass, etc. But in the vast south zone, there are not only named Yardang bodies like Alien, Great Man Statue, Hen Laying Eggs, Two Lions Guarding the Gate, but also many Yardang formations that require imagination to appreciate. The shapes of Yardang differ from different angles and directions.
(1) Alien
Alien is a columnar Yardang. Erosion and collapse formed the columnar Yardang body because the upper clay layer is difficult to weather, while the lower sandy layer is easily weathered and exfoliated. This differential weathering created the most unique scenic spot in the area. It is like a life left on earth, standing still for thousands of years.
(2) Great Man Statue
With a heart of reverence, people like to make statues for some great men, but making statues for great men is not exclusive to humans. In the Yardang Geopark, there are also great man statues, but their creator is not humans but nature. The Great Man Statue in the Yardang Geopark is a mature-stage Yardang body. In this geological hall, it resembles a towering great man, as if pointing to the landscape and strategizing.
Some Yardang formations rise abruptly, like pillars, trees, bamboos, or umbrellas; some lie prostrate on the ground, like lions or tigers; some are strange, like gods or devils; some are solemn, like castles, curtains, or houses. In the gullies of the "earth hills," the goose-yellow sand dunes wind and undulate, glittering with golden waves, like pieces of brocade.
At this moment, the off-road vehicle stops near the designated Yardang formations, giving everyone space and time to approach the Yardang. Walking alone along the road, gradually going deeper, the yellow sand wraps around you like the wind on the road. No signal, no people, no response, only the howling wind in your ears and the Yardang beside you that has been there for hundreds of thousands of years. Only at this moment can you feel your own existence, a feeling that is incredibly real.
4. Sunset at the South Zone High Point
Along the sand ridge, the off-road vehicle accelerates to rush up to the South Zone High Point, which is when it truly shows its power. Experience a real journey of speed and passion, excitement and heartbeat, every step feeling the wheels grinding forward on the sand.
Standing high up, everything in the distance appears small. Thoughts are carried far away. For thousands of years, in this magical place, any worldly troubles are as insignificant as the smallest dust on the Gobi Desert. Then, looking ahead to thousands of years, no matter how great our ideals, they cannot escape the witness of this land. Here, let go of worries, forget time, and be grateful to nature. Occasionally, you see a few similar off-road vehicles roaring by, accompanied by wind and sand, and your thoughts slowly return. You realize that this fulfilling time is gradually fading away, but your heart becomes more expansive.
If you happen to catch the sunset in Yardang, it will be an extremely fortunate and delightful surprise. In this open view, quietly watching the changing colors of the Yardang formations under the setting sun, you will be deeply moved by the wonders of nature.
5. Western Blockbuster
Entering Yardang is like being in an American Western movie. The vast, endless roads in the Gobi desert, the high sky, the wide land, the long road โ all give a sense of a Western blockbuster romance. Anyone will be awed by the wonder of nature.
If you want to stage a Western blockbuster, prepare sporty, dynamic, and stylish clothes in advance. You can use your imagination to take the photos you want. Of course, you can also consult our driver. I believe a unique beautiful photo is everyone's dream and the best memory to witness the trip.
After the off-road trip ends, the driver will lead everyone back to the parking lot. The journey is not over; more excitement follows.
Dunhuang Yardang is a gift from nature to the world. Only by coming in person, reading it with your heart, and touching it, can you feel the magnanimity of Yardang and the magnificent beauty bestowed by nature. Its brilliance is more than this; it is like a huge canvas waiting for you to fill in. Whatever you like and however you prefer, it has it all. You just need to slow down: stop to camp and watch the stars and sunrise; cycle, hike, etc., to satisfy your curiosity and adventurous spirit.
