Let's Go See the Golden Sand Sea
Day 1: Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring — Yuequan Town — Dunhuang Grand Ceremony
Day 2: Mogao Caves — Shazhou Night Market — Desert Camping
Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring are world-famous for the harmonious coexistence of sand and spring, a miraculously formed 'desert wonder'. There are many experience activities in the scenic area, such as camel riding, off-road motorcycles, helicopters, paragliding, sand sliding... Looking into the distance, the yellow sand dunes roll in waves, the golden sand sea 'surging and roaring'. If you climb to the top and slide down, it makes a sound like silk and bamboo instruments; when the wind blows over the summit, the buzzing sound resembles both golden drums and rolling thunder. Crescent Moon Spring is a clear spring shaped like a crescent moon, nestled in the embrace of the sand sea at the foot of Mingsha Mountain. Crescent Moon Spring is about 100 meters long, over 20 meters wide, and its deepest point reaches more than 5 meters. In the spring, the water is azure and clear as a mirror, with schools of fish swimming; around the spring, water plants thrive, green trees surround, and pavilions and towers stand. Viewed from afar, the blue water and yellow sand complement each other, making Crescent Moon Spring even more magical and beautiful. Countless visitors come here to climb the sand mountain and view the spring, intoxicated by the pleasant and melodious humming of the wind blowing over the sand mountain. While marveling at the wonder and beauty of nature, people continue to write series of magical stories, perform touching myths, and thereby express their hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow. You will definitely be captivated by the magic and beauty of Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring when you come here.
Yuequan Town highlights cultural experiences, tapping into Dunhuang's rich natural and cultural resources, showcasing profound historical and cultural heritage, innovating and developing while protecting and inheriting, striving to become the first impression of the Silk Road. The town's architecture is in ancient Han style, with inns and various restaurants of different styles, full of local characteristics, and overall gives a good impression. It's also very lively here at night.
Dunhuang Grand Ceremony is a desert live-action show. You can fully enjoy Dunhuang's beautiful scenery, brilliant lights, with an audience seat that rotates 360 degrees and moves forward and backward, transitioning from outdoor to indoor. Different scenes are distinguished by rotation. The actors' passionate performance, a highly creative show, a touching story, interwoven with many Dunhuang-specific elements, depicts a story that took place on the ancient Silk Road.
The Mogao Caves, once blooming like fireworks; now, the Mogao Caves are like a thousand-year-old man, quietly telling the legendary stories of its joys and sorrows, partings and reunions. For thousands of years, with its unique cultural charm—ancient Chinese civilization, ancient Greek civilization, ancient Indian civilization, and Central Asian civilization—it has blended into a unique cultural melody in the world, attracting countless people to visit and be moved and enchanted. Tickets can be booked on a certain official website or on a certain travel platform. It is the largest, best-preserved, and richest classical art and cultural treasure house in China, and also a world-famous Buddhist art center. The beautiful flying Apsaras, 'flying over the Mogao Caves, traveling through the corridors of history.' I believe that as long as everyone practices civilized tourism, the Mogao Caves will still stand there after a thousand years, accompanied by the howling wind from Mingsha Mountain, like a brilliant pearl radiating light, shining even more dazzling and enchanting in the vast desert! (To protect the Mogao Caves, photography is prohibited inside the caves.)
Shazhou Night Market is a famous snack street in Dunhuang. The short commercial street is divided into two parts: one side is open-air barbecue, and the other side is handicraft vendors. Beer with grilled skewers, plus the famous apricot peel drink, makes for a very enjoyable meal. Performers from shows come to promote, accompanied by a moment of song, 'the Apsaras begin to dance.' There are many local specialty snacks here: donkey meat yellow noodle and Hu Yang stewed pie are must-eats in Dunhuang. Handicrafts include sand bottles, handmade camels, jewelry, local dried fruits, etc. With its distinctive local features and rich folk customs, it is known as Dunhuang's 'night scene picture' and 'customs painting'.
Desert camping is an essential experience for desert travel. The camping bases are located at the back mountain of Mingsha Mountain. There are many operators. I booked through a certain travel platform, and the prices are similar. Hotpot, bonfire party, fireworks, open-air disco dancing, barbecue, off-road motorcycles, and camping in the desert at night to watch the stars—the feeling is truly too beautiful for words.
