Northwest China travel has always been a dream in my heart. This spring, I planned to take my wife, who has worked hard with me for years, to experience a different kind of trip together. I didn't know how many days to arrange for a Northwest China tour, which scenic spots were fun, or whether there were any recommended local quality tour guides in Qinghai. We planned to fly directly to Xining and then join other tourists with the same itinerary locally—I dared not try a risky trip for just the two of us.

Not long ago, I traveled in the Northwest for a few days with several close friends. I've summarized the following experiences and feelings to share with you, hoping they help. Before going to Northwest China, we found a local quality tour guide in Qinghai, Da'age, recommended by many netizens. He customized our tour route and calculated the costs, saving us worry and, most importantly, money.

We took an 8-day, 7-night itinerary covering highlights like Menyuan Rape Flower Sea, Zhangye Colorful Danxia Geological Park, Jiayuguan, Mogao Caves, Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring, Dunhuang, Dongtai Jin'er Lake, Caka Salt Lake, and Qinghai Lake. It was an all-inclusive package with no additional costs! The beautiful scenery of the Northwest truly captivated me. The current travel market is chaotic, so finding a reliable person is crucial. The hotel we stayed at and the meals were arranged by our itinerary planner, Da'age, who was very patient. I have to give a thumbs-up to this handsome guy. Travel Tips:

Every trip should be well planned in advance. Travel itself is a high-consumption activity; distinguish between travel and sightseeing. Don't waste money and precious time, only to end up with unhappiness and frustration. No matter where you go, the following points are essential:

- Be familiar with the main attractions of your destination: which are must-see, which are optional, and how the scenic spots are distributed. Different destinations have different distributions, so choose a suitable travel style to spend less money and visit more highlights.

- Understand the local consumption level. Choose a正规 travel agency and a guide with a national license. Beware of potential traps like "zero-fare tours," "low-price tours," and "shopping tours." Never adopt the attitude of "figure it out upon arrival."

Our Itinerary in Qinghai and Gansu:

Day 1: Arrive in Xining, Qinghai; stay overnight in Xining.

Arrive in Xining, Da'age arranged a butler to pick us up and take us to the hotel. Then we had free time.

Day 2: Xining – Riyue Mountain – Daotang River – Qinghai Lake – Xiangpi Mountain – Caka Salt Lake – Chaka Town

Tibetan compatriots say: This is a river formed by the princess's tears. Princess Wencheng threw away the sun-moon mirror and headed west, but she still missed her hometown. Weeping sadly, her tears formed a river flowing westward, as if guiding her west. Geologists point out that over 200 million years ago, the Qinghai Plateau was a sea. Due to strong crustal movements, the plateau gradually rose. Initially, Qinghai Lake's water flowed eastward through Riyue Mountain, but as Riyue Mountain rose higher, Qinghai Lake became a closed basin, and the originally eastward river had to turn westward. The Daotang River is famous mainly because it lies along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. The place is named after the river, and now a small town called Daotang River sits at its mouth where it enters Qinghai Lake, serving as the gateway to Qinghai's pastoral areas. Crossing Riyue Mountain feels like entering another world. In Daotang River, you experience a completely different风情 from the Hehuang Valley. Mongol and Tibetan compatriots wear traditional fur robes, ride horses, call dogs, and drink heartily exuding a rugged masculinity.

Qinghai Lake, called "Kuku Nor" in Mongolian (meaning "blue sea"), lies in the Qinghai Lake basin in northeastern Qinghai Province. It is China's largest inland lake and largest saltwater lake. There are five small islands in the lake, with Haixin Island being the largest.

Xiangpi Mountain belongs to the Qinghai Nanshan mountain system, with an altitude of 4,451 meters, much higher than Riyue Mountain. Shortly after leaving Heimahe Township, you see the undulating Xiangpi Mountain range towering ahead like a huge barrier. The slopes are steep, mostly 30-40 degrees or even steeper. Ascending the Xiangpi Mountain pass, you can overlook beautiful alpine pastures and leisurely grazing sheep.

Day 3: Caka Salt Lake – Crossing the Qaidam Basin – Keluke Lake – Emerald Lake – Dachaidan – Dachaidan

Caka Salt Lake is near Chaka Town in Wulan County, Haixi Prefecture, also known as Caka (meaning "salt pond" in Tibetan). It has been famous for producing "big green salt" since ancient times. On sunny days, the lake water has high crystallization, revealing a thin layer of brine over the white salt lake. The scenery and reflections are clear and pure, like a mirror of the sky.

Emerald Lake was originally the mining area of the Dachaidan Chemical Plant salt lake mining team. Because the lake water is clear and green like emerald under sunlight, it is called "Emerald Lake." When calm, the lake water spreads like mirrors, reflecting the blue sky, white clouds, and snow-capped peaks of the Qaidam Mountains. It outshines Caka Salt Lake and is breathtakingly beautiful.

Day 4: Dachaidan – G315 National Highway – Wusute Water Yadan – Dongtai Jin'er Lake – Qinghai Yadan Landform – Dachaidan

Known as China's Highway 66, the blue sky and white clouds are stunning. The G315 U-shaped sky road in the third largest basin is perfect for road trip photos.

Wusute Water Yadan Geological Park features a unique water Yadan landform. As Jin'er Lake's water level rose, it gradually submerged the northern Yadan groups, forming this distinctive water Yadan. From dawn to dusk, the scene is dreamlike. Sunlight illuminates the water Yadan in golden colors, with stone pillars and reflections seeming to float in midair like a magical castle.

Nanbaxian, also called Nanbaxian Yadan, is a vast Yadan landform with wind-eroded earth forest groups. The name comes from eight female geologists who sacrificed their lives searching for oil here in the last century.

Day 5: Dachaidan – Dangjin Mountain – Petrol Town – Aksay – Yangguan – Dunhuang

Dangjin Mountain is in Aksay Kazakh Autonomous County. Crossing the 3,800-meter Dangjin Mountain, you enter Qinghai. The view opens up, and a seemingly endless road points straight to the basin center. The road's visual width is magnified 20 times by power lines and cable ditches on both sides. This place was once uninhabited, with only a road stretching toward the misty Dangjin Mountain, like a passage to a mysterious world in Middle-earth.

Petrol Town is the old county seat of Aksay in Jiuquan, Gansu. It was once a bustling oil town. The movie "The Ghouls" was filmed here. The town rose from oil, then declined from hustle and bustle to ruins. Traces of human existence have merged with nature.

Yangguan Ruins, also called Yangguan Museum, are west of Dunhuang. Built in the Western Han Dynasty under Emperor Wu, it was an important pass on the southern Silk Road, named for being south of Yumen Pass. The site includes replica Han-style city gates and several exhibition halls displaying many Silk Road artifacts. Visitors can see relics, buildings, and a residential street.

Day 6: Start from Dunhuang – Mogao Caves – Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring – Dunhuang (overnight)

Mogao Caves, also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes, are southeast of Dunhuang. The site includes the Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center (showing short films) and the caves themselves. Carved over a millennium, they contain vast murals, statues, and artifacts, making them a world-famous Buddhist art site. The art features a harmonious blend of architecture, sculptures, and Dunhuang murals, vividly representing multiple dynastic styles.

Dunhuang Museum, south of the city, showcases the history of Dunhuang as a Silk Road hub and precious artifacts from the Mogao Caves. Its exterior resembles Han Dynasty Great Wall sections and beacon towers. Inside, it feels like a cave complex with ancient corridor designs. The main exhibition is "The Confluence of Chinese and Foreign Cultures."

Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring, south of Dunhuang, is a unique sand-and-spring landscape and a symbol of Dunhuang. Crescent Spring sits at the foot of Mingsha Mountain, surrounded by dunes. Due to wind direction, sand moves upward rather than burying the spring, earning it the title "Desert Eye."

Day 7: Start from Dunhuang – Guazhou – Jiayuguan – Zhangye Colorful Danxia Geological Park – Zhangye

Guazhou County, under Jiuquan City, Gansu, is at the western end of the Hexi Corridor. It connects to Yumen in the east, Dunhuang in the west, Subei Mongol Autonomous County in the north and south, and Hami, Xinjiang in the northwest. It has been a transport hub and Silk Road trading town since ancient times.

Jiayuguan is the western starting point of the Ming Great Wall. It is the largest and best-preserved ancient military fortress along the Ming Great Wall, a crucial strategic pass known as the "Great Barrier Between China and the Outside."

Zhangye Danxia Landform, formed 6 million years ago, is in Linze and Sunan counties. Composed mainly of red conglomerate, sandstone, and mudstone, it features thousands of cliffs and mountains in bright red and reddish-brown hues. Under sunlight, the colorful hills and peaks are spectacular. It was also the filming location for Zhang Yimou's "A Simple Noodle Story" and the TV series "Detective Di Renjie."

Day 8: Start from Zhangye – Qilian Grassland – Gangshika Snow Peak (distant view) – Menyuan Hundred-li Rape Flower Sea (seasonal only) – Daban Mountain – Xining, end of trip

Biandukou Ecological Leisure Tourism Area, also called Biandukou Scenic Area, is in southeastern Minle County. The area offers stunning natural scenery, including Stone Buddha Cliff Paintings, Niangniang Tomb, Black Wind Cave, and Zhuge Stele. Cultural attractions include international campsites, capsule hotels, motels, BBQ cabins, grassland camping bases, and ecological horse trails. It's a great leisure destination.

Menyuan County, in Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai, has the province's largest rape flower base, a major oilseed production area. Every July, rape flowers bloom from Qingshizui in the west to Yulongtan in the east, and from Lenglongling (border with Gansu) in the north to Daban Mountain in the south. The sea of flowers stretches tens of kilometers, turning Menyuan into a golden ocean.

Daban Mountain, at the border between Datong and Menyuan counties in Qinghai, is a key transport route from Qinghai to Gansu. Among the many mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Daban Mountain is famous for its special location. It is one of three viewpoints for Menyuan's rape flowers. After exiting the Daban Mountain tunnel, you soon reach the Daban Mountain viewing platform, offering distant views of Gangshika Snow Peak and Menyuan's hundred-li flower sea.
