Global Walk【12】the Walk of the World – Season 1, Episode 9: Paris
Paris, for me, is a place I can never get enough of – part two. That year, my visit coincided with the Mid-Autumn Festival, and I got to experience a Chinese-style celebration in romantic Paris.
On September 11th, a flight from London to Paris cost just 120 yuan and took 50 minutes – a much better deal than the Eurostar.
Naturally, the first thing I did after dropping my bags in Paris was to go see the bell tower of Notre-Dame, which had been damaged by fire in April.
I headed straight to the weathered Notre-Dame to gaze at it from afar; then, as always, I sat down for a coffee at my favorite corner café on the Left Bank of the Seine – a ritual every time I visit the city.
Although Notre-Dame wasn’t too badly hurt, what was lost went far beyond bricks and mortar: it was a piece of history we can never return to, memories impossible to relive, and feelings that can’t be rekindled...
In that moment, the whole world grieved with it!
Along the Left Bank of the Seine, art is a sight you simply can’t ignore. Be it the people or the paintings, everything becomes part of the scenery!
This Mid-Autumn trip to Paris was at the invitation of Brother Chang from the Paris International Chinese Character Festival committee, to take part in promoting Chinese culture in France. I came both to learn and to see for myself: to discover how an older Parisian gentleman spreads the profound beauty of Chinese characters around the world!
At the market event in the town hall of the 13th arrondissement, I felt deeply moved and proud. Holding a Chinese character festival during China’s traditional Mid-Autumn Festival showed just how deeply the organizers understand Chinese culture.
The bright moon carries longing across a thousand miles, and even in a foreign land, it shines just as bright.
In Paris, how could you possibly skip the Louvre during the day?
In Paris, how could you let down the city’s all-round culinary delights?
In Paris, how could art ever escape the pull of the Centre Pompidou?
In Paris, how could you resist the temptation of street food?
In Paris, how could a drive through the city not pass by the Arc de Triomphe?
In Paris, how could the songs echoing in the metro ever be missing from daily life?
In Paris, classicism is the city’s soul.
In Paris, modernity is its body.
Even though the Grande Arche de la Défense is more imposing and majestic, it has never won my affection.
The foundation’s building, a new landmark on the edge of central Paris, is amazing – both its architecture and its collection. Even though I’m not into the products themselves, the building and exhibits always draw me back for a visit.
