First, I wish everyone a bullish 2021! In the Year of the Ox, come to Hokkaido to eat beef. Be sure to visit Shiraoi Town. Shiraoi beef is one of the representatives of Hokkaido Wagyu. It melts in your mouth without being greasy, and most importantly, the price is fair—fair, fair.
There are five designated Shiraoi beef restaurants:
① Uemura Beyond – The most expensive. They serve prepared meat. Two stores: one not far from the town entrance, the other on their own farm. The farm store only sells Shiraoi beef burger takeout. Both the restaurant and burgers taste great.
② Iwasaki Omotenashi Tei – Mid-range. You grill yourself over charcoal. There's also a branch called Gochisou Tei specializing in steak and the Japanese favorite hamburg steak (hambagu). Personally, I recommend the hamburg steak place—it's cheap and delicious.
③ Cowbell – Budget-friendly. A restaurant in the forest where you also charcoal-grill. The owner is very particular about food texture, so the dishes are unbeatable.
④ Amano Family Farm – Mid-range. Also self-grill. Their homemade side dishes are a standout—super tasty. They even make meat cakes. It would be a memorable night for a birthday.
⑤ Ushi no Sato – Budget-friendly. If you have no transportation, it's a 15-minute walk from Shiraoi Station. Self-grill. Lunch sets are a great deal. My top recommendation—I buy my New Year's meat here.

An izakaya known for reasonable prices and seasonal Hokkaido ingredients. In the tank, botan shrimp and squid swim leisurely. They hold regular tuna disassembly shows. Signature seafood menu includes the popular 'Dirty Salmon Roe Rice Bowl'—not that the roe is dirty, but the toppings are piled high and spill over the bowl, so I call it a dirty rice bowl, haha... Another bit of useless knowledge? They also have live squid sashimi, the kind where the squid 'dances' as seen in videos. Besides seafood, there are local fresh vegetables, grilled chicken, and Genghis Khan menus. Here, regardless of age or gender, you can enjoy Hokkaido cuisine.
Highlight: all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink buffets—highly recommended in Japan.
