Essential Guide for Ski Beginners at Rusutsu Resort Ski Area in Hokkaido!
As we enter the golden autumn of October, the weather gradually turns cooler. It is well known that autumn in Hokkaido is fleeting every year. Rusutsu Resort has also entered the final stage of this year's summer operations with anticipation for the snow season.
So before the 2023-2024 snow season begins, let's take a look at how beginner-friendly the Rusutsu Resort Ski Area is!
As the largest resort in Hokkaido, the Rusutsu Resort Ski Area boasts three ski mountains: West Mountain, East Mountain, and Isola. These three mountains feature a total of 37 ski trails of four difficulty levels: beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert. Among them, the beginner trails are: West Mountain has 3—Family, White Lover, Rainbow; East Mountain has 3—Easy Trail, Fuboru, Joint; Isola has 4—Furikozawa, Isola D Bypass, Isola Summit Bypass, Isola Grand Bypass.
Although all three mountains have beginner trails, some of these beginner trails are connected to intermediate, advanced, or expert trails, or are too long, so they are not necessarily beginner-friendly. For novice skiers, we highly recommend the Family and White Lover trails on West Mountain and the Easy Trail on East Mountain. Both in terms of length and slope, they are very suitable for practice.
Every year, first-time visitors to Rusutsu or those not yet familiar with the resort ask, 'Which ski pass is suitable for beginners?' You don't need to buy an entrance ticket to enter the Rusutsu ski area, but you need a lift pass to use the chairlifts and gondolas to access the trails. To meet different needs, we offer various types of passes: 1-day passes, multi-day passes, point passes, etc. For beginners in the practice phase, it's worth considering the cost-effective point passes, which can be purchased based on the type and number of lifts you ride.
・Quad chairlift: 2 points
・West Mountain gondola: 3 points
・Gondola (East Mountain, Isola): 4 points
・Double chairlift: 1 point
※East Mountain Gondola Line 1, Tower Double Chairlift, Across No.1 and Across No.2 double chairlifts are free to ride.
※The number of points required varies depending on the lift.
For those just starting to ski, choosing equipment is another major concern before skiing! Rusutsu Resort has 4 equipment rental service stations offering a variety of rental packages. Three are located in the Rusutsu Resort Hotel & Convention Center: on the 2nd floor of the North Wing, 1st floor of the North Wing (Premium), and 1st floor of the South Wing. One is located in The Rusutsu Westin Resort Hotel on the 1st floor.
At the 4 service stations, you can choose from 5-hour, 1-day, or multi-day rental packages based on your skiing level and itinerary. You can also choose to rent snowboards or skis, full equipment sets, or individual items. If you rent a full set of equipment, the gloves and goggles included do not need to be returned; you can take them home and use them for your next ski trip.
If you lack confidence in practicing on your own or want to quickly master skiing skills with the correct methods, you can also consider the ski lessons at Rusutsu Resort. At Rusutsu Resort, you can find official instructors who speak Chinese, English, and Japanese. Whether for snowboarding or skiing, there are courses of various durations and types. Those who want to experience the fun of skiing can choose a shorter 2-hour lesson; those who want to become proficient can choose lessons longer than 2 hours.
Both group and private lessons must be booked through the official website. To ensure a smooth reservation for your desired lesson, it is recommended to check the official website information in advance and not miss the booking window.
In addition to skiing, Rusutsu also offers a variety of snow activities, restaurants with diverse cuisines, hot springs for complete relaxation, and more. This place is great for skiing, but it's not just about skiing. I believe that friends who love snow, winter, and outdoor activities are also looking forward to the arrival of winter. More ways to have fun at Rusutsu Resort await your exploration this winter!
