After the past three years, Seoul's shopping hotspots have quietly changed. When I first arrived in Seoul, everyone went to Myeongdong to shop, with crowds thronging the crisscrossing streets. In recent years, no trip out is complete without visiting Seongsu-dong, the gathering place for Seoul's fashionistas, which is full of trendy restaurants and cafes, perfect for dates and photo ops.
Another shopping hotspot in Seoul is Apgujeong, where trendy and luxury brands gather. Many juniors chasing K-pop idols come here hoping for a chance encounter. If three years ago, Korean shopping trends centered around Myeongdong, now the real shopping hotspots in Korea have gradually shifted toward the Gangnam area. So what duty-free shops are there in Gangnam? That's the must-visit on any Korea trip I want to share today: Hyundai Department Store Duty-Free, one of Korea's four major duty-free shops!
Generally, anyone who has seen a Seoul shopping guide knows that Korea has four major duty-free shops: Lotte Duty Free, Shinsegae Duty Free, Shilla Duty Free, and Hyundai Department Store Duty Free. Today, we introduce Hyundai Department Store Duty-Free. It is located on Seoul Subway Line 2, the core line of Seoul's subway, making it easy to reach Dongdaemun and Gangnam directions. Take Seoul Subway Line 2 to Samseong Station, exit at Exit 5, and walk two to three minutes to reach Hyundai Department Store. Floors 1-7 are the department store, and floors 8-10 are the duty-free shop. You can first go to the membership service counter on the 10th floor to get a duty-free shop membership card. The staff there speak good Chinese, so those not good at Korean need not worry about communication. When registering as a member, you can enjoy various shopping experiences through rich events and discounts. Plus, there are countless promotions all year round; with brand-exclusive events, you get tons of free gifts, and some brand single-item discounts are very attractive! Korean domestic brands purchased at the duty-free shop can be taken directly, while other brands generally need to be picked up at the airport. If you shop at the department store on floors 1-7, you can apply for tax refunds on purchases over 30,000 won.
For those living near Gangnam, it's very convenient to go to Hyundai Department Store Duty-Free. Even tourists visiting here don't have to wait in long lines, as it's not too crowded, and locals also enjoy shopping here. Additionally, there are restaurants on the 10th floor where you can eat after shopping. Nearby, there is also COEX, Korea's comprehensive trade center, which is worth a visit.[a1] The Starfield Library there is also a popular photo spot!
