Magical Sheshan: A Summer Family Adventure with Hamburg
Amidst relentless rains, this summer felt too short.
The lush green of summer, the passion and joy of the season—I've missed them so.
To catch the tail end of summer, I went to Shanghai with my little Hamburg, embarking on a Sheshan adventure.
It's not the height of the mountain but the spirit that dwells within. For Shanghai, mountains are rare. Whether in cultural history or natural scenery, Sheshan stands out. With its lofty church and rich history, Sheshan is a timeless fragrance, a pearl set in the southwest of Shanghai.
Whenever it is, getting close to nature always delights the body and soul. After long rainy days, Hamburg was like a bird returning to the forest, a fish diving into the deep—his joy beyond any description. Child, laugh heartily, let your laughter spread through this green sea.
Emerald green dripping, scenery picturesque—such beauty brings an utterly cheerful mood. Start this journey, give your spirits a proper holiday.
Chenshan Botanical Garden, the largest plant kingdom in East China, offers a nighttime spectacle. A magical night, wonderful companions—this adventure reached its climax: the dream of the night, and the unstoppable curiosity in a little boy's heart. Look at that sparkle in his eyes—curious, eager; life is enriched bit by bit.
Beyond the mountains and across the sea, there live a group of Smurfs—lively and clever, mischievous and quick. At Shanghai's Smurf Park, my little elf dances with the Smurfs, swimming in an ocean of endless joy and knowledge. A focused man is the most handsome, and a focused boy is pretty handsome too.
Day 1: Upon arriving in Shanghai, head straight to Sheshan Forest Park to admire its beauty; in the evening, enjoy a night tour of Chenshan Botanical Garden and explore the plant kingdom; stay at Sheshan Forest Hotel and share the night with the mountains.
Day 2: Spend the day at Shanghai Smurf Park, experiencing the joy of playing with the Smurfs all day long.
1. Transportation to Shanghai is very convenient—high-speed rail, airplane, train, or car all available.
2. Sheshan is located in the suburbs of Shanghai; driving yourself is most convenient. Consider renting a car, but beware of Shanghai's rush hours, or you'll be stuck in traffic that makes you question life.
3. If using public transport to Sheshan, take Metro Line 9 to Sheshan Station; after exiting, many shuttle buses go directly to the scenic area, which is quite convenient.
Summer family travel tips:
1. Early August is still very hot, especially in Shanghai—muggy and oppressive. Even in the forest park, take precautions against the heat. Bring sun hats, anti-heatstroke medicine, etc.
2. This itinerary involves climbing and getting close to nature, so comfortable shoes and insect repellent are a must.
3. Shanghai cuisine is well-seasoned, with rich soups and sauces, oily and dark soy, which is quite enjoyable. But if you're not used to it, watch out for travel tummy troubles; bring some common medicine just in case.
4. For clothing, kids in summer need breathable, loose, and comfortable clothes. If your child is willing, bring a sun-protective jacket. Choose light-colored clothes that don't absorb heat and are good for photos.
Mostly flat Shanghai gains its varied mountain scenery from Sheshan. The twelve peaks of Sheshan are each beautiful. Though it's the highest in Shanghai, the altitude isn't high—the tallest, Tianma Mountain, is only 98.2 meters. With its enchanting beauty, lush greenery, birdsong, and flower fragrance, Sheshan is perfect for kids.
Stepping up stone steps, holding little Hamburg's hand as we walk through the forest—this is a rare chance. Laughing and playing along the way, occasional pleas for a carry, it's like going back to when Hamburg was so small and clung to me. Unknowingly, the closeness I missed due to busy work is slowly returning.
Although it's a national 4A-level forest park, Sheshan isn't as wild as deep mountains. Still, remember to keep the kids hydrated during the hike. Quick tip: carbonated drinks can replenish energy to some extent, easing low blood sugar and thirst after exercise, but don't overdo it.
Climbing and reaping rewards along the way, Sheshan in its heyday left many cultural sites. Over dynasties there were 'Ten Views' and 'Eight Views'. With a history of Buddhist worship, it's said Sheshan once had as many as 1,048 halls and pavilions. The beautiful scenery and magnificent architecture also attracted the famous traveler Xu Xiake.
Teaching children about culture and history amidst mountain views is a great opportunity. Luckily I brushed up on some knowledge before coming; while sightseeing and explaining, I felt quite accomplished as a dad. But little Hamburg couldn't digest too much at once—for him, running in the mountains was far more joyful.
Sheshan National Forest Park covers 401 hectares, far from downtown, stretching 13 kilometers. It's dotted with famous gardens, villas, pavilions, and towers—truly magnificent. A small pavilion, dignified and rustic, adds another charm to Sheshan amid layers of green leaves.
The forest park's woodland trails are quite thoughtful—flat yet retaining a wild character. Though not very wide, they're enough for two to walk side by side. Kids are so simple; just a path makes them so happy. I got to be a kid again too, we laughed freely, the mountain woods becoming our playground.
Sheshan is divided into East and West Sheshan. West Sheshan Park is the most scenic and largest, with many sites worth visiting. Unfortunately, during this special period, the Catholic Church and Observatory were not open.
Even without entering, the majestic exterior is wonderful. Gothic spires, Israeli-style olive-shaped belfry, Spanish-style small domes, Greek-style colonnades—yet the glazed tiles and plain walls are Chinese. A blend of diverse cultures gives the church a unique splendor.
The ornate architecture bears the marks of time, yet remains dazzling despite wind and rain. The Catholic Church became a perfect photo spot in Sheshan; little Hamburg even prepared props, looking quite dashing. But wherever you take photos, safety first.
Joyfully ending the forest park visit, what remains in memory are Hamburg's smiling face and the wonderful scenery. The fresh air and stunning views brought good spirits—let's commemorate it with a big smile.
The first night's stay was at Sheshan National Forest Hotel, right opposite the park's gate, very convenient. And it doesn't feel like a hotel at all; the four-story buildings resemble a resort. There's a mini waterfall at the entrance, the courtyard is garden-like and pleasant, quiet and beautiful. Sleeping against the mountain, with a child, was quite comfortable.
The Forest Family restaurant is right next to the hotel, its ink-painting style blending with the woods. Elegant and cozy, the simple, clean setting makes dining a pleasure.
Authentic Songjiang farmhouse cuisine—though we're in East China, I still tasted many dishes I'd never seen or heard of. Generous portions, fresh ingredients, great flavors. Even the simplest fried dumplings were flavorful, well-seasoned.
The most popular dish was definitely the white-cut chicken. Tender meat that melts in your mouth, even kids can eat it. With special dipping sauce, it's smooth and refreshing, with a unique chicken aroma. Hamburg ended up using his hands—proof of how good it was.
Sheshan National Forest Park tips:
1. Opening hours: 8:30 to 17:00, last entry at 16:00, currently free.
2. Due to the pandemic, real-name reservation via WeChat official account is required, entrance only via the North Gate. Before entry, show the Shanghai health code, reservation code, temperature check, and wear a mask. The park is not crowded.
3. Address: No. 9258 Waiqingsong Road.
4. Parking available at East Sheshan parking lot and West Sheshan North Gate parking lot, flat rate of 10 yuan.
A family night tour is a rare activity. After enjoying Sheshan National Forest Park's fresh nature during the day, come to Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden at night to explore an extraordinary nocturnal world and its amazing architecture.
Hamburg's first ever night visit to a botanical garden was dedicated to Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden. Viewing a dazzling array of plants and animals in the dark with other kids will be an unforgettable experience. Come on, little Hamburg, let's open a new world in Shanghai's night.
The night tour begins at 6:30 pm, gathering at Gate 2 of Chenshan Botanical Garden. In the spacious and less crowded area, you can take off the mask for a while. But early August in Shanghai is still sweltering even at dusk, so watch the kids. Hamburg was quite excited, so he was fine.
The night tour begins. Parents and children follow the guide in a line into the greenhouse to witness the strange life world and many unknowns. The plants here are rarely seen normally, such as the garden's treasure, Welwitschia mirabilis, and giant cacti. Kids open their curious eyes wide, unwilling to miss any novelty.
Look at my little Hamburg, listening intently to the teacher's explanation, actively interacting. His thirst for knowledge was bursting, eyes shining, eagerly absorbing new information. May you keep this passion and enthusiasm forever; no matter how long you're away, you'll still be a youth when you return.
The most magical is still nature: the softest cactus grows the hardest spines, yet gathers into delicate little flowers. Who would imagine such a combination? Pitcher plants, cannonball trees, trumpet trees—many I'd only heard of or never even heard of. They captured everyone's attention, and the kids were all engrossed, forgetting the stuffy heat.
The Chenshan night tour covers three greenhouses: Rare Plants House, Desert Plants House, and Tropical Flowers and Fruits House. Each is a dream, a treasure trove full of surprises, dazzling and overwhelming. But the garden's charm doesn't stop there—rare plants, precious flowers from around the world, and seasonal special exhibitions make it a year-round destination, definitely worth the visit.
Without the daytime noise, darkness itself filters out distraction. The whole world slows down and quiets. I think, no matter how many years pass, Hamburg will remember this place, where in this big, wonderful world, he left his focus and dedication. In the night, under the light, knowledge grew, thoughts sparkled. So beautiful, so touching.
Stars twinkling, a gentle breeze, ears filled with the crisp chirps of insects and loud croaks of frogs, composing a summer symphony. The night is colorful, with a different kind of charm. The greenhouse is not just a living kingdom, but also a super photogenic spot, adding a gorgeous touch to Hamburg's photo album.
Thousands of triangular glass panels form a fantastical world. The transparent glass, under the lights, becomes iridescent, as if entering another dimension. Each pane shines differently, together creating a magnificent picture.
Standing outside the exhibition hall is another sensory delight. The uniquely shaped building looks like a huge cocoon, from which colorful butterflies are emerging and taking flight. Under Shanghai's ever-changing sky, it appears even more magical.
Both inside and outside, you can capture blockbuster-style photos of your kids. But it really tests photography skills and equipment. If you plan to, bring gear suited for night shooting. Of course, my little model was also very cooperative, performing brilliantly.
Chenshan Botanical Garden tips:

Yesterday we immersed ourselves in the plant world; today, we dive into a sea of joy. On the last day of our two-day Sheshan trip, we visit Shanghai Shimao Smurf City Theme Park—Smurf Park. Hello, Smurfs, we're here.
Let's take a group photo with Smurfette, Papa Smurf, Brainy, and Jokey—even the villain Gargamel. Before going wild, let's pose and snap some pics~
Smurf Park is an indoor theme park, so no worries about weather or temperature—you can play all day. It's huge, 30,000 square meters, divided into the Adventure King zone and the Smurf zone, with many interactive rides, all beloved by kids.
The Digital Career Experience Center fulfills kids' dreams ahead of time. Diverse scenes, various costumes—you can live your dream job. Cool, my little police officer.
The Stone Cart racing is super popular with kids, boys and girls alike, all wanting to feel the thrill of speed. Charge on~
Put on safety gear, line up, and the little racers set off one by one. My camera kept locked on Hamburg, capturing every exciting moment.
Maybe it's innate talent, Hamburg was like a fish in water on the track—drifting around curves, sprinting on straights, cool from start to finish. He won easily without any obstacles, who knows, he might really become a great racer when he grows up.
In the karting area, there's a dedicated gear zone with helmets and racing suits, even trophies to fill the ceremony. Hold the trophy, enjoy the joy of victory—you deserve this moment of glory.
There's also a parent-child interaction zone, like the Adventure King bumper cars that adults and kids can ride together. Play with other families, laugh out loud with every collision—so much fun, the spacious area makes for a great time.
At Smurf Park, the 6D Exploration World is a must-visit. High-tech effects and motion devices deliver a six-sided, all-encompassing experience—realistic, thrilling, satisfying every fantasy.
Entering here, you're in the real Smurf village. Colorful waterfalls, cute mushroom lights, giant flowers and grass—everything looks so dreamy, magical.
Kids who love the Smurfs will be overjoyed here, as if transported into the cartoon. Cute little ones can strike all sorts of poses, always taking such adorable photos.
In addition to sightseeing, there are also rides to better experience the magic. Hold tight when sitting in the Papa Smurf Jelly Cups, or you might get shaken out. You can also browse the 'Smurf Gift World' and bring your Smurf friends home.
This Berry Coaster may not look very steep, but it's still quite thrilling. Adults screamed in fright—those who scare easily, stay away.
Gargamel's Dark Laboratory holds many secrets. Quick, use your imagination and hands-on skills to defeat Gargamel with wisdom.
My serious little boy is back at it again. In Gargamel's Treasure Room, he turned into a little miner, carefully panning for ores, meticulously sifting through sand to discover precious gems.
Though they're not precious in real life, right now they're priceless treasures. Each piece carries Hamburg's effort and hard work, worth keeping.
After the dark lab, it's finally dad's time to shine. The rides in Smurf Park are all new and in great condition, smooth operation. Watch me hit every basket on the shooting machine.
Unexpectedly, age doesn't matter when you have ambition. Hamburg's shooting skills are also great, his win rate almost catching up to mine. Let's have a father-son showdown, young man.
There are many more rides at Smurf Park, always one that makes you laugh—it's a fantastic family park. But for me, wherever I am with little Hamburg, the air is happy, and time is joyful. I think Smurf Park also aims to bring happiness to every family, letting more people enjoy warm parent-child moments.
