The Most Fun Place for a Shanghai Summer Night: Songcheng, with Water-Splashing Frenzy and Nonstop Shows
🔸 Spectacular night tour photos from Songcheng
In this sweltering summer, the evening is the ideal time for relaxation and fun. Shanghai Songcheng has also launched a nighttime tour activity, which is said to be spectacular. So what are you waiting for? Let's go and check it out together!
Night Tour Time Guide📍 Entry to Shanghai Songcheng's nighttime activity starts from 5 p.m., and you can stay until 10 p.m. During these hours, you're free to have fun however you like, from the first floor to the sixth floor, and even the outdoor spaces. Except for the outdoor park on the ground floor and the rooftop garden, everything else is fully air-conditioned indoors, so you won't be scorched by the sun—the key is staying cool! Escalators and elevators make it easy to move between floors for performances.
Night Tour Show Guide📍 Shanghai Songcheng has performances every day, meaning from the moment it opens, shows run non-stop with a rich variety of content. Each performance is scheduled with a specific time and location. If you ask the staff, they will kindly and patiently give you the day's show schedule. It's best to snap a photo with your phone so you can check times and places anytime. Most performance times don't overlap, but trying to catch every single one would be a bit greedy—just pick your favorites.
Recommended Night Performances📍 The Great Earthquake is a theater show, absolutely spectacular, with fixed times and location. During the night tour, you can catch it from 17:30 to 18:10 at Theater No. 2 on the first floor. Arrive early to grab a good seat. 📍 Besides The Great Earthquake, there are many other shows to enjoy. We recommend Magic Bubble, Hello! Chaplin, Amazing Ventriloquism, Crystal Ball, Jingwu Showdown, Cliff Music Concert, and Secret of the Jungle. And of course, there's the Joyous Carnival and Color Water-Splashing Party, which the whole family—adults and kids alike—can join in.
Photo Spots for the Night Tour📍 Much of Shanghai Songcheng is indoor, making it super cool and comfortable. We recommend strolling through the Sky Market on the 6th floor and Shanghai Roots on the 4th. These two spots are especially popular with girls because they make for great photos!
Night Tour Food Guide📍 The ground floor has a great food street and restaurants with tons of tasty snacks, all at reasonable prices. I recommend the teppanyaki tofu—it's delicious and a huge portion, enough for two, we almost couldn't finish it. At 20 yuan, it's truly affordable. A 500ml bottle of mineral water is only 5 yuan, also not expensive. There are all kinds of snack items, so don't worry about going hungry or not finding something good. Transportation📍 Take Metro Line 13 to Shibo Avenue Station, then it's a 5-minute walk to the park. There's also a sizable parking lot.
What I love most about Songcheng is its shows—absolutely superb! For example, The Eternal Love is a must-see in a lifetime, a spiritual feast for the soul. But that's a paid performance, while Shanghai Songcheng's night tour includes many free shows, and they're just as brilliant. Such great value!
The Great Earthquake tells the story of the Wenchuan earthquake. It's a must-see production that vividly recreates the devastation of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in all dimensions, as well as the subsequent rescue efforts. Right from the start, the show doesn't begin with a formal performance—instead, the director walks onto the stage and recruits volunteer actors from the audience, allowing spectators to truly take part and become part of the story. This makes the experience more authentic and greatly enhances the interactivity.
The show uses a flashback structure. First, a photographer recounts shooting wedding photos of a couple. Then a young woman comes out to recall her mother protecting her during the earthquake. After that, the performance truly begins. Before the quake, the city is peaceful and harmonious: children playing and laughing, tourists strolling, and a newlywed couple happily taking wedding photos with joy on their faces. But disaster strikes. Suddenly, dark clouds gather, thunder and lightning roar, and a terrifying, powerful earthquake shakes the land. Even we in the audience feel the violent tremors, giving us a shockingly realistic experience. It felt so real that we weren't sure if we were imagining an actual quake or just a performance effect. On stage and in the audience, everyone was thrown into confusion. At that moment, I grabbed my husband's hand, thinking: If we were really in such a situation, what would it be like? Would we still have the heart to argue, complain, or blame each other? Humans are truly tiny. In the face of nature, we are like ants. So cherish the present, and cherish the ones you love—you never know when you might part ways. Then, at the command, the People's Liberation Army soldiers marched toward Wenchuan from all directions, and we couldn't help but feel a surge of passion. Several actors performed challenging high-altitude zip-line stunts, breathtaking and thrilling. Medical workers and firefighters also rushed to the scene to rescue survivors, lifting rocks together. Everyone bent down to listen for sounds underground—saving just one more life brought renewed hope. In the face of great disaster, this is the cohesion of a great nation. The Great Earthquake is truly worth watching!
Amazing Ventriloquism: Ventriloquism has a history of over 3,000 years, originating as an ancient art in Egypt, once used in feudal sacrificial rituals. In the past, it was often dismissed as superstitious trickery. In modern times, however, ventriloquism has seen a revival; from the 1970s, it appeared frequently on American radio and television. During a performance, the ventriloquist manipulates a puppet, and the two engage in dialogue based on a story, the performer using different voices to bring the conversation to life. At Shanghai Songcheng, the Amazing Ventriloquism show is a must-see—watch out, the monkey actually speaks! This show is perfect for both kids and adults, and the magical monkey even interacts with you! So adorable!
On the 6th floor's Sky Market, there's a performance you absolutely must not miss: the Crystal Ball! An actor dressed like a character from Arabian Nights performs a magical display with a crystal ball. In his arms, the crystal ball seems to become not a ball at all, but a clear spring, an ocean, brimming with life. The audience's eyes follow his every move, flowing up and down, mesmerizing and brilliant. It's a show you really shouldn't miss. Plus, there's seating here where you can take a short rest.
Magic Bubble: The performer at Shanghai Songcheng is incredibly skilled. Even simple moves draw gasps from the audience and bring the show to a climax. So cool! He dips a tool into soap solution, then lifts and blows, creating a multitude of enchanting bubbles. Under the lights, they refract into brilliant colors—wow, so beautiful! Even adults like us couldn't help but stop and watch. Some grown-ups even joined in as models, and when that huge, long bubble enveloped them, everyone's faces lit up with amazement. It was truly fun and lively. His deft movements and the rainbow bubbles transported us back to childhood, turning us into kids chasing bubbles and colors. Ah, it's been so many years since I've felt that way—a sense of innocence and freshness. Old memories flooded back like a tide, lifting me onto waves of joy. It's so wonderful to relive that childhood happiness! Seeing the children's pure smiles and joyful leaps made me happy too, and before I knew it, tears of joy welled up in my eyes...
Hello, Chaplin: Chaplin was one of the first stars I ever liked. He could express the whole plot without a single word—what a genius! His little glances, gestures, and even that waddling walk could make you burst out laughing, happiness overflowing like water. When I first saw this Chaplin master at Shanghai Songcheng, I thought it was just a convincing costume and makeup. But once his performance started, the whole audience was electrified, and everyone laughed uncontrollably. I've seen his show twice, and each time was top-notch—you just can't help but hold your belly laughing. He has a keen eye for inviting kids from the audience to join him, and he's smart about picking pre-teens and teens aged 10 to 15. Children that age have their own strong ways of thinking and expressing themselves, so they're great to work with. Every kid who went on stage had a blast with Chaplin, and we onlookers laughed till we cried. In short, this kind of show brings joy to everyone. Happiness fills the air and embraces all of us—the atmosphere is fantastic, thumbs up!
Jingwu Showdown: This is a battle to defend national dignity, a martial arts contest against foreign powers. Our Jingwu heroes display the highest level of Chinese martial arts and the strength of the motherland to the extreme.
Color Water-Splashing Party is the most intense, passion-filled activity. Grown-ups and kids alike have a blast. It's not just water you're throwing—it's joy and passion! All your frustrations are washed away in the water and the shouts. Is there any reason not to be happy at a water-splashing party? What troubles could possibly survive such dousing? In truth, life is simple. Things that seem hard may pass if you just grit your teeth. The obstacles you think you can't overcome will be behind you if you persevere. Life isn't that complicated. Think simply. Every individual has different thoughts, but as long as you hold on to what makes you happy, your life will be happy. Go for it!
Cliff Music Concert: An elegant concert of beauty and harmony. The women playing violins were like spirits in the night, illuminating the darkness and piercing through time. The bright, clear notes rose into the night, like a beacon that swept away the shadows in people's hearts, offering the highest musical enjoyment. It was a moment of soul resonance, a moment of pure bliss. Everyone was mesmerized by the music in the night—an incomparable pleasure, right here and now...
Secret of the Jungle is the final performance of the Shanghai Songcheng night tour. I thought it might be a bit gimmicky, but surprisingly, it was done with great care and brilliance. The show depicts the life of indigenous people in a primitive jungle. Carefree, they run through the jungle every day, freely enjoying themselves. But one day, children suddenly burst into their world, followed by a beautiful young woman, disrupting their peaceful lives. The tribespeople try to approach these intruders and learn to coexist harmoniously, eventually becoming a loving family. The story teaches us that respecting nature is respecting ourselves. It also gives the audience a strong sense of participation, especially for kids, teaching them through entertainment to love and protect nature.
During this visit, I bumped into four lovely girls and took a beautiful series of photos of them. If you love portrait photography, I strongly recommend Shanghai Roots on the 4th floor and the Sky Market on the 6th—they're amazing spots for great shots. Just a quick snap will make your social media explode. For landscape and night view lovers, head to the rooftop on the 6th floor. Wow, it's absolutely stunning—you can see the entire Shanghai nightscape, filling you with a sense of freedom. The complex has six floors. Girls adore the 6th and 4th floors. The 6th floor is the Sky Market, full of exotic charm with colorful lanterns and vivid blossoms, just like something out of the Arabian Nights. Photos here are incredible. The 4th floor is Shanghai Roots, where there's a dressing studio—for 158 yuan you can transform into various looks with the help of a professional stylist. Even if you don't pay, you can still take gorgeous photos, because the whole place is designed with a vintage feel, and any random shot will make your friends green with envy.
Shanghai's nights are dazzling, and the time at Shanghai Songcheng flies by, but it fills us with happiness—a feeling beyond compare, something money can't buy. A surge of passion echoes in my chest, powerful, comfortable, and joyful. I think I've fallen in love with Shanghai Songcheng and this wonderful night!
