Singapore's Unique Attraction: The Battlebox Museum, Exploring Singapore's WWII History
This year, red tourism sites in China have become extremely popular among tourists. Did you know? In Singapore, there is a WWII-related attraction that is very popular, namely the Battlebox Museum Singapore.
The Battlebox Museum is a real secret military command center from World War II, holding great significance in Singapore's history. It won the TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Award for the number one spot from 2016 to 2020. Whether you are a military enthusiast or a tourist who enjoys history and culture, the Battlebox Museum is worth a visit!
The Battlebox Museum Singapore is located at Fort Canning Park in the city center of Singapore. Built in the late 1930s, it was the former British underground command center before and during World War II. During WWII, the British forces defended Malaya and Singapore from this mysterious underground fortress, built about nine meters deep. Of course, it was also here that the British decided to surrender Singapore to the Japanese invaders on February 15, 1942.
It was not until 1988 that the underground command center was remembered by the world, and then it was renovated into a museum, reopening to the public to showcase the wartime stronghold of that era. The Battlebox Museum has 27 rooms, including two new exhibition halls: The Fort Canning Story and the Engine Room. During the tour, visitors can hear bombing sounds around them, as if they are amidst the flames of war. Each room recreates the scenes of that time, providing an immersive experience of the wartime conditions.
The museum offers a 30-minute guided tour of the attraction. With the commentary, visitors can better explore the real reasons behind one of Britain's greatest disasters and large-scale surrenders in history, learn about the fall of Malaya and Singapore during WWII, and understand the operations of the underground command center.
