Dig Deep! Unlock Suzhou's 'Hidden Menu' with Ya Shu~

📍 Suzhou · 👁 7388 reads · ❤️ 35 likes

Classical gardens, Pingtan and Kunqu opera, scenic beauty, Suzhou-style restaurants... these are the typical Suzhou impressions. With the rise of domestic travel, more and more people are paying attention to Suzhou, coming here to experience the enchanting beauty of Jiangnan (the region south of the Yangtze River).

Recently, my 'Uncle' lifestyle once again transforms into 'Su' lifestyle; on this nth visit to Suzhou, of course I want to dig deep into some unusual routes and find the 'hidden menu' of thousand-year-old Gusu (Suzhou's ancient name).

01 Typical Suzhou-style Travel: Garden Tours

When visiting Suzhou, garden sightseeing is naturally a must. But how can you stand out from the crowd? I've unlocked these new ways to play for you.

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Immersive Theater 'Six Records of a Floating Life' (Garden Version)

When ancient Kunqu opera meets modern immersive performance, what kind of scene is it? When all this happens in a Suzhou garden, and performers meet you at zero distance, what kind of experience is it?

Canglang Pavilion, one of the four famous gardens of Suzhou, hosts such a wonderful show. Shen Fu's autobiographical essay 'Six Records of a Floating Life' is filled with the happy life of him and his wife Chen Yun, along with their travels. You may be moved by the deep affection between Shen Fu and Yunniang, but experiencing it firsthand in the oldest garden in Suzhou offers another rare life experience.

As China's first immersive theater, the professional performance of the actors blends seamlessly with the ancient trees and rocks of the garden, successfully presenting that unique aesthetic world hidden in time and the enduring, flowing emotions of the ancients.

Tips: Canglang Pavilion 'Six Records of a Floating Life': No. 3 Canglangting Street

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Wear Hanfu and Travel Through Time in a Garden

I've been to Yipu Garden at least twenty times, so what new tricks can I still find? When visiting Kyoto, people wear yukata; when visiting Seoul, they wear hanbok. Why can't we have a time-travel journey in hanfu in our own gardens? This time, I put on hanfu and returned to my favorite lesser-known Suzhou garden, Yipu Garden, for a different garden experience.

This garden, covering less than six mu (about 0.4 hectares), truly lives up to the saying 'a scene at every step.' White walls and dark tiles are covered with creeping vines, and the rocks and lake are surrounded by lush green. It's said that the garden changed hands several times, all owners being literati, which preserved much of its cultural charm.

The design and layout of Yipu Garden combine a simple, open, and natural grandeur with elegant, delicate, and intricately winding paths. Centered around a pond, the garden unfolds a variety of scenery: marvelous rockeries, graceful flowers and plants, lively fish, delicate waterside pavilions, elegant couplets, cleverly designed doorways... Although the space is small, it never feels cramped.

In different seasons and times, the garden displays completely different beauty and mood, pleasing to the eye and magnificent. Dressed in ancient attire, stepping into it, I felt like the garden's owner, strolling and admiring the scenery, elevating life to a new level!

Tips: Yipu Garden: No. 5, Wenya Road, Changmen

02 Typical Suzhou-style Travel: Transportation

If you are still addicted to the travel style of 'get off the bus to take photos, get on the bus to sleep,' then you are really out of touch. No more complaining about the boring transit time, no more worrying about the long distance between attractions. At least now in Suzhou, the most troubling problem for travelers has a perfect solution!

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Having Afternoon Tea on a Bus

Recently, the incredibly popular gourmet sightseeing bus is all the rage. Board the bus, and you can enjoy the beautiful ancient city views outside the window while tasting authentic Suzhou-style snacks provided onboard.

Never underestimate this magical bus; the food is truly provided by local, well-known old shops. During the short stops at each station, grannies quietly bring the food for the next stop. This mysterious 'eat and travel' format definitely transforms the anxiety of rushing around into a leisurely afternoon tea. Is there any more enjoyable way to travel?

Many attractions in Suzhou's old town are far apart. This kind of eat-and-play not only solves the transportation problem but also satisfies your taste buds. The bus even sells Suzhou souvenirs. I have to say, this travel method is an absolute winner.

Tips: Gourmet Sightseeing Bus: Boarding point: Jinji Lake Scenic Area - West Visitor Center

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Customized Private Car Service

In the old city, you can't drive yourself; after all, traffic and parking can be a real headache. But for spontaneous trips, you can opt for a customized private car tour. With it, family outings feel even more exclusive. Wherever you want to go, just tap on the onboard iPad, which helps you find nearby attractions, restaurants, hotels, and more.

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Suzhou by Water

Suzhou's greatest charm lies not only in the old town but also on the waterways outside the city walls. With its well-developed water routes, Suzhou has prospered throughout history. Taking a cruise along these water routes lets you see a different side of Suzhou.

Aboard this cruise, besides admiring the water town scenery, you can enjoy tea, listen to traditional music, and even book a private banquet. Let me tell you secretly, during the tour you'll see the arch bridge that the four pilgrims from the 1984 version of 'Journey to the West' crossed, still retaining its ancient charm. If you want to experience a different Suzhou flavor, try the cruise.

Tips: Shantang Street Bai Juyi Pier

03 Typical Suzhou-style Travel: Accommodation

When traveling, choosing a hotel is of course fine. However, in recent years, the popular 'staycation' concept has made people more particular about where they stay. Where to stay in Suzhou? Let me offer my recommendations.

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: A B&B Called Gusu Xiaoyuan (Suzhou Courtyard)

B&Bs are a very popular lodging style. Gusu Xiaoyuan takes this concept a step further; they selected a number of traditional houses in the old city and transformed them into differently styled B&Bs—some artistic, some garden-style—you can choose whichever you like.

Gusu Xiaoyuan - Duanshan Tang, located near Guanqian Street and Pingjiang Road, uses an ancient house full of Suzhou charm. While preserving the original architectural texture, they've created a refined living space suitable for travelers. With a classic exterior and a modern interior, staying here lets you experience the feeling of dreaming back to old Suzhou.

Tips: Gusu Xiaoyuan - Duanshan Tang: No. 48 Daru Lane

Additionally, I'm particularly fond of Gusu Xiaoyuan - Donghuali, the newly emerging top-tier boutique B&B on Pingjiang Road. Its exterior looks like a house with white walls and black tiles, but once inside, it reveals a whole new world full of surprises.

The entrance houses a café called 'Jiu Qiu,' meaning 'one day apart feels like three autumns, and three days without their coffee is like nine autumns.' The owner intended it as a gathering place for friends, but unexpectedly the young barista's superb skills and consistently delicious coffee turned it into a popular spot. That's great—staying at this B&B, you won't have to worry about getting a good cup of coffee.

In this space with an explosive sense of design, the lighting, comfort, and views make you feel like you're in an Instagram photo! The courtyard features are comfortable, blending modern design elements, perfect for a group gathering to enjoy exclusively.

Tips: Gusu Xiaoyuan - Donghuali: No. 64 Donghuaqiao Lane

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Stay in a Republic-era Style Art Gallery

Hidden in the city, the Seclusion Hotel next to Jingu Li Art Center on Pingjiang Road is just such a hidden gem.

The exterior is a Republic-era western-style building, but inside lies a different world. Old wood, stoneware, and antiques forgotten by time, mottled stained glass, copper bells, wooden doors... Together with modern interior design, they create a unique artistic atmosphere, comfortable and filled with a mysterious retro charm.

Tips: Seclusion Hotel: No. 20 Bashang Lane

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: A Japanese Master's Work Hidden in a Garden

'Youxiong' is a hotel that design enthusiasts and architecture lovers can't resist. Its doors are usually closed; the only way to see inside is to stay there and unveil its mystery.

Originally named 'Jia Yuan,' it was the private residence of Bei Runsheng, the grand-uncle of master architect I.M. Pei. With over 3,000 square meters of garden space, the hotel has only 15 suites, combining classical elegance with modern chic, offering excellent privacy.

The renovation was done by Shuhei Aoyama, a Japanese architect and popular designer from 'Dream Home.' Here, Suzhou garden architecture meets Japanese Zen culture, evolving into a style that breaks down barriers between people and allows them to enjoy the beauty of natural integration, instantly switching visitors into a state of wonderful living.

Tips: Youxiong Hotel: Jingwen Li, Renmin Road

04 Typical Suzhou-style Travel: Cuisine

For foodies, cuisine is the only way to start a trip. I think food is also the fastest and most direct way to understand local customs and culture.

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: A Bowl of Suzhou Nostalgia

When visiting Suzhou, a bowl of Suzhou-style noodles is not to be missed. Yu Mian Tang, located at the old Changmen site, has a century-old history. It sheds the greasy clamor of old-fashioned noodle shops and retains a simple yet elegant environment. This noodle shop has become a scenic spot within the ancient street and is also a highly praised internet-famous restaurant.

At Yu Mian Tang, you can savor the acclaimed classics like Three-Shrimp Noodles and Bald Butter Noodles, as well as new creations like Golden Soup Buddha Jumps Over the Wall and Fish Maw Chicken Soup Noodles that cater to modern tastes. However, what the owner recommends most is a bowl of White Broth Fengzhen Big Pork Noodles, because in this broth you can truly taste the authentic Suzhou noodle soup flavor—rich but not greasy, clear but not bland.

Tips: Yu Mian Tang: No. 73 Nanxin Road

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Innovative Dishes with Suzhou Flair

Want to try creative dishes without missing Suzhou flavors? Dou Ke is a great choice! Located on Pingjiang Road, next to the Seclusion Hotel at Jingu Li, this newly opened restaurant has a chic, bourgeois-bohemian vibe. The simple environment is full of style, specializing in East-meets-West fusion cuisine.

While maintaining quality, the prices are very affordable—no wonder it quickly topped the list of Suzhou's creative cuisine.

Tips: Dou Ke: No. 99 Shilinsi Lane

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Late Night Eatery with Suzhou Flavor

At first hearing 'late night eatery,' you might mistakenly think it's a Japanese-style restaurant, but it's actually a restaurant specializing in Suzhou fusion cuisine.

It organically blends traditional Suzhou dishes with Japanese cuisine, creating innovative Suzhou fare that has been well received, quickly becoming a chain brand in Suzhou and a favorite among diners.

During your meal, why not try a bottle of sake and experience what it's like to pair sake with Suzhou cuisine? I believe you'll love it.

Tips: No. 17 Late Night Eatery · Izakaya (Guanqian Shaomozhen Lane Branch): Room 116, No. 886-900 Ganjiang East Road

05 Typical Suzhou-style Travel: Leisure & Fun

What do you think Suzhou is like? The bustling local customs? A romantic artistic journey? Or the fun social-media spots? I say: All of these are Suzhou.

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Breathe in the Local Hustle and Bustle of Suzhou

How to eat breakfast? In Suzhou, try a flatbread with coffee! Yes, that's right! Because this is Shuangta Market, a creative place that combines artistic flair, local life, and a sense of history, a newly popular photo spot!

The founder of Morihico Coffee is a designer from Hokkaido who loves places with urban vibrancy. The style of Shuangta Market suited his needs perfectly, so he opened this shop. Their pour-over coffee is very popular, and the ice cream is also a bestseller because the machines and ingredients come from Japan.

You should know that in the hearts of ordinary city residents, the wet market is a very important place, a daily destination for daily necessities. I've heard that since the 1990s, Shuangta Market has been one of the most popular markets in downtown Suzhou.

As traditional wet market functions gradually decline, there's increasing demand from residents and tourists for a quality comprehensive market. The renovation of Shuangta Market was inevitable. Now, the Shuangta Market we see is built on the original market, integrating cultural and creative products, trendy snacks, artisan crafts, even coffee and tea shops, creating a 'living museum' that interprets the city's customs and lifestyle.

Shuangta Market perfectly matches my vision of a future market. In this renewed market, there's no dirty mess or noise of traditional markets, only clean display windows, tidy arrangements, and a Japanese-zakka-style artistic atmosphere. Here you can eat, stroll, take photos, and spend half a day immersing yourself in a whole new Suzhou lifestyle.

Tips: Shuangta Market: No. 2 Shijiang Lane

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Guoyun Lou Art Center

'Jiangnan collections are the best under heaven, and the Guoyun Lou collection is the best in Jiangnan.' This 150-year-old library, once belonging to the owner of Yi Garden, is now a vibrant new cultural landmark.

The creative space, combining an art gallery, café, and bookstore, cleverly borrows the architectural essence of Jiangnan gardens. Permanent contemporary installation art blends with the white-walled, black-tiled ancient residence, producing a wonderful chemistry.

It also houses many original designs by Pan Yueming, and is said to be a secret check-in spot for his fans.

Tips: Guoyun Lou Art Center: No. 2 Ganjiang West Road

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: 'Youjian' – Meeting Suzhou Again

I never know how to describe Youjian: it's a coffee shop, a home decor store, a bar, a private kitchen, an art gallery, a creative homeware shop, a B&B... or all of the above. That's Youjian.

This dilapidated old house, hidden deep in a residential alley, was discovered, transformed, and 'radically renovated' into the creative space we see now. It retains the Suzhou charm while blending in modern design inspiration; inside the modern spaces, old objects from the past are displayed. They say the hustle and bustle of life best soothes the ordinary heart, and Youjian is just such a place.

Tips: Youjian: No. 13 Dongsheng Li, Niujia Lane

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Rumor Has It All the Trendsetters in Suzhou Board This Old Train

Once the Dehe small commodity market, it has now transformed into a Suzhou photo hotspot. If you love taking pictures, Blue · SPORT Cultural and Creative Industrial Park is a landmark not to be missed.

Entering the park, the first thing that catches your eye is an old train. Around it, there are many specialty shops for coffee, clothing, trendy items, and more.

There are also Jiangnan-style small theater talk shows and sports areas, all with a bright, colorful vibe. Whether you're relaxing, exercising, strolling, or coming with a friend who's good at photography, you'll get stunning photos in minutes.

Tips: Blue · SPORT Cultural and Creative Industrial Park: No. 188 Panxu Road

06 Typical Suzhou-style Travel: Nightlife

'The moon climbs the willows, people meet after dusk.' Speaking of Suzhou's prosperity, one must mention the night of Gusu. With the development of the night economy, more and more people choose to go out at night. If you still think 'Suzhou has no nightlife,' you're very mistaken.

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Gusu 8:30 PM

The first time I saw the 'Gusu 8:30 PM' idea, my eyes lit up. In the past, when visiting Suzhou, you'd have a steaming bowl of Suzhou noodles in the morning, visit Suzhou Museum and gardens during the day, but at night you'd wonder where to go and what to do, feeling something was missing. The prosperous Jiangnan scenery I'd imagined was always accompanied by bustling nights and crowds. Now, with Gusu 8:30 PM, this imagined scene finds a reality.

'Gusu 8:30 PM' is a key tourism project and city night economy brand in Suzhou, focusing on the diverse nightlife of modern urbanites. It offers a series of special events with Gusu characteristics: premium performances, night tours, markets, and more. When night falls and lights come on, whether you're enjoying a late-night feast, visiting familiar attractions, or buying a couple of creative souvenirs, it's a new way to experience a different Suzhou. One can't help but exclaim: After a thousand years, the night in Gusu is still so splendid, with all kinds of flavors and encounters easily found here.

Tips: Gusu 8:30 PM: No. 43 Taijian Lane

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Sound into Suzhou

They say sound best evokes emotions. Starting from the Zhuangyuan Museum and ending at the Xiangmen City Wall, about four kilometers, roughly 6,000 steps, on Pingjiang Road at night, put on your headphones and follow the soft Suzhou dialect on an immersive time-travel journey. The familiar, bustling ancient street by day becomes more emotional at night. Walking with the audio feels like traversing between two worlds—an utterly unique experience.

Tips: Suzhou Zhuangyuan Museum · Sound into Suzhou: Near the intersection of Lindun Road and Niujia Lane

• Ya Shu's Hidden Gem: Bar Hopping

Bar hopping is the most common form of nightlife. You should know that Suzhou, often joked by netizens as 'everyone goes home to sleep after 8 p.m.,' actually has many good bars.

Whether you like a relaxed atmosphere at Bubbles Beer Shop, the super popular trendy spot Pan House Lounge, or the understated niche Youjian Half Awake bar, you can find them all in Gusu District.

Postscript: One second you're lingering in the classic charm, the next you're stunned by the modern style, and then both hit you at once. From admiring mountains, waters, and scenery, to exploring the soul of the city, then leaving and returning, gradually living like a local—perhaps this is the fate between Suzhou and me. Now when I return to Suzhou, I stay in gardens, wander in markets, eat in noodle shops, and hop between bars. Tranquil, warm, intense, and aftertaste—let all these flavors touch the heart... If you ask me to define it, I just want to say: 'Nei ho, Suzhou.'
