The "Four Seasons Tour in Suzhou & Suzhou Autumn Tourism Season" launch event will also arrive alongside the Jiangnan Culture & Arts Festival. How beautiful is Suzhou’s autumn? Let’s take a look together!

Admire Autumn Colors – A Palette of Gusu

Fiery maple leaves, golden ginkgoes, snow-white reed flowers... Suzhou’s clear autumn is richly colorful, delicate and soft, offering delightful enjoyment!

01 Maple Red

If a single leaf heralds autumn, that “leaf” should be the red maple of Jiangnan. With every gust of wind, the blushed branches and leaves dance gracefully in the forest, adorning each dawn and dusk, composing a dreamlike autumn painting.

In the quiet Humble Administrator’s Garden on an autumn day, find a shaded corridor and gaze upon the courtyard where red maples blaze like fire, mountains and water intertwine, elegant halls and pavilions embellish the dark tiles, and are mirrored in the flowing water. Red maples set off the corner pavilion; morning bells and evening haze, lingering echoes waft. If you also enjoy a bowl of vegetarian noodles, this sweetness will leave a lasting aftertaste in the autumn charm of Hanshan Temple.

The maple leaves of Yushan Park, touched by autumn frost, unleash a fiery red color, calm, mellow, turning the winding paths of the park’s maple trail into a poetic landscape of “man-made yet seemingly created by nature.”

Route 1: Tianping Mountain — Mudu Ancient Town — Lingyan Mountain

Route 2: Humble Administrator’s Garden — Suzhou Museum — Hanshan Temple

02 Ginkgo Yellow

“Patterned apricot wood made the beams, thatched with fragrant grass.” Suzhou’s autumn is the color of ginkgo. As the autumn wind rises, the small leaves turn golden yellow, adorning the paradise of Gusu; as the wind strengthens, ginkgo leaves leave the branches, swirling and fluttering in a waltz, covering the poetic world.

Tiger Hill in autumn brims with infinite antiquity. The pagoda half-hidden among golden ginkgoes creates an unrivaled scene. As deep autumn arrives, the enchanting golden hue of Dinghui Temple, Taiping Zen Temple, and Zijin Nunnery spreads out. Zen, autumn mood, and comfort blend, carefree and content.

On Daoqian Street in autumn, a fairy-tale world of sky-filling ginkgo yellow hides. Strolling along the ginkgo trail, the rustle of fallen leaves underfoot, the wind whirling yellow leaves dancing, inadvertently capturing the autumn of Gusu’s streets and lanes.

03 Reed Flower White

“Lush reeds and rushes, dew turns to frost.” Reed flowers grow by the water, and each autumn they bloom like snow, resembling a dream. When a gentle breeze stirs, layers of reed flowers dance and swirl, adding a touch of tenderness and softness to Suzhou’s clear autumn.

Reed flowers love the water; Taihu Lake is excellent for enjoying them. The rippling blue waves set off the white fluffy reed flowers; with an autumn breeze, oh, how beautiful! Looking along the long plank path, the beauty deep within the reed flowers appears and disappears. If by chance a boat returns late, with fishermen singing at dusk, distant mountains, nearby waters, and the autumn sun add a great deal of poetry to the reed marsh.

Shajiabang is famous for its vast water surface and continuous reed marshes. In the lake and ponds, water caltrops and lotuses intermingle, reeds grow thickly. In autumn, reed flowers blossom, a full expanse of silvery white. Antique-styled painted pleasure boats carry tourists threading through, enabling them to appreciate the classic scenery depicted in “The Book of Songs”: “Lush reeds and rushes.”

Savor Autumn Fragrance – Jiangnan Aromas

01 Osmanthus Fragrance

“Why should they need light green or deep red? They are naturally the finest blooms.” Osmanthus does not win favor with bright dazzling luster or coquettish colors. Its hue is light, its fragrance strong; distant traces, sparse feelings, gentle and soft, like a demure Suzhou “little miss,” possessing a unique and moving autumn charm.

The most exquisite and elegant autumn colors are hidden in the Lingering Garden. The “Smelling Osmanthus Fragrance Pavilion” in the garden was built specifically for appreciating osmanthus and enjoying its scent. This pavilion is open on all four sides, surrounded by cluster-planted osmanthus. The fragrance pervades the air, and without leaving the city, one gains the delight of mountains and forests.

Guangfu Yaoshang Village, one of the five major osmanthus bases in China, is truly a “Osmanthus Village.” Far from the city’s hustle and bustle, in golden autumn, the fragrance of osmanthus here drifts for ten li — absolutely superb!

Recommended photography routes:

Route 1: Lingering Garden — Panmen Gate — Osmanthus Park

Route 2: Guangfu Yaoshang Village — Tongguanyin Temple — Taihu Blue Ring Highway — Taihu Lakeside Wetland Park

Route 3: Baixiangwan Eco-Tourism Area — Zijin Nunnery

02 Rice Flower Fragrance

“Rice fragrant and ripe in late autumn, thousands of acres connected by crisscrossing paths.” In autumn, the rice fields are the richest and most joyfully abundant places. Pausing in the fields to watch the rice waves, threading through the paths to listen to the autumn wind, a long-anticipated autumn tracing journey starts from this moment.

On one side the Grand Canal, on the other North Taihu, and in between, over seven thousand mu of fertile land and villages with white walls and grey tiles. Ink-wash rendering, a benchmark of rural modernization, also a countryside paradise near the city. Flourishing and thriving is the portrait of Beilian Village in autumn: boundless golden rice waves, people’s joyful expressions under the warm sun, together intertwining into a moving pastoral painting.

Recommended photography routes:

Route 1: Wangting Canal Park — Rice Fragrance Park — North Taihu Tourist Scenic Area

Route 2: Tongli Ancient Town — Tongli Beilian Village

Route 3: Zhangjiagang Changyinsha Eco-Tourism Area — Xiangshan Scenic Area — Yangshe Old Street

Best viewing time: Late October 2021

03 Chrysanthemum Fragrance

“Blooming beautifully in late autumn, spreading fragrance within ten paces.” Strolling through gardens and courtyards, the subtle elegant scent will soak in with the wind, refreshing the mind step by step, making one feel relaxed and joyful. It’s too hard not to love chrysanthemum fragrance — not that among flowers one favors chrysanthemums alone, but once these blooms end, there are no more flowers.

Cliff chrysanthemums, tree chrysanthemums, golden rooster chrysanthemums, thousand-head chrysanthemums — on Taigong Island, in Fushui Villa, on Hexiang Isle, every step reveals a different scene. Appreciating chrysanthemums and viewing scenery interweave. Shanghu Lake’s Golden Autumn Chrysanthemum Exhibition displays the unique grace of chrysanthemums from different angles, shapes, and modes, intoxicating.

Recommended photography routes:

Route 1: Yushan Scenic Area — Shanghu Lake Scenic Area

Route 2: Lion Grove Garden — Humble Administrator’s Garden — Suzhou Museum

Route 3: Shangfangshan National Forest Park — Shihu Lake Scenic Area

Best viewing time: Late October 2021

Taste Autumn Flavors – Seasonal Delicacies

The sky is high and the air crisp, autumn colors are delightful. Between heaven and earth, the heat of summer has lessened, adding a touch of warm tranquility. Various seasonal delicacies and lake fresh foods come into season. Autumn specialty products take the stage in turn. Suzhou’s “most delicious” season has finally arrived!

01 Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crab

“Just laugh at that gluttonous prefect of Wu, who traded a poem for two crabs.” Yangcheng Lake spans a hundred li in circumference, with rippling clear waters, pure as a mirror, lush water plants, and a suitable climate. This is the “crystal palace” of the “ultimate Gusu delicacy” Yangcheng Lake hairy crab. Yangcheng Lake crabs have long enjoyed a great reputation overseas and are even called “Chinese golden-fuzz crabs.”

02 Sugar-roasted Chestnuts: In autumn, no one can resist the temptation of shiny, easy-to-peel, sweet and fragrant sugar-roasted chestnuts.

03 Suzhou-style Meat Mooncakes: With flaky, crisp crust and beautiful coloring, the filling is fatty but not greasy, and the texture is crisp. They are an indispensable delicacy during the golden autumn moon-viewing season.

04 Osmanthus-Glazed Lotus Root: When sweet, glutinous lotus root meets intensely fragrant osmanthus, the delicious story of Suzhou begins to unfold.

05 Osmanthus Fermented Rice Wine: The point of drinking lies not in the wine itself; let the thick, sweet, sticky osmanthus fermented rice wine slide down your throat on an autumn night.

06 Osmanthus Cake: An exquisite pastry carrying the unique rich osmanthus fragrance of Jiangnan, relaxing your spirit and calming your mind.

Encounter Autumn Waters – Ten Canal Scenic Spots

The Grand Canal flows endlessly, calmly rippling. The ancient city of Suzhou also became a paradise on earth with ten thousand merchants gathering, thanks to the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. Suzhou’s canal cultural heritage flows through Maple Bridge Night Mooring, Changge Wind Sails transmitting through the centuries. Suzhou’s famous canal sites converge, stringing together the “treasures” scattered along both banks of the canal into a “necklace,” forming a captivating scenic belt of the famous tourist city Suzhou.

01 Wumen Wangting

Wangting is the first town along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal entering Suzhou. Bai Juyi’s poem “Lamplights thread through village markets, music ascends post towers” depicts the prosperous scene of ancient Wangting. Over the course of a thousand years of history, Wangting has preserved the cultural imprints of rice cultivation, Liangzhu culture, Songze culture, and ancient post culture.

02 Xushuguan

Xushuguan has long been known as “a strategic point of Jiangnan, a bustling pier in Wu,” a thousand-year ancient town that flourished because of the Grand Canal. In the first year of the Jingtai reign, it became one of the seven major customs posts in the country, hence the name Xushuguan.

03 Maple Bridge Night Mooring

The Maple Bridge Scenic Area is located west of the ancient city of Suzhou. It arose from an immortal poem and flourished because of the babbling canal. Ancient Maple Bridge, ancient Hanshan Temple, ancient Maple Bridge Town, ancient Tieling Pass, and the Tieling Pass Battle Historical Exhibition together connect the past and present of Maple Bridge.

04 Pingjiang Ancient Lanes

The Pingjiang ancient lanes are the most typical and complete historical and cultural conservation area of the ancient city of Suzhou, truly the epitome of the ancient city. To this day, Suzhou’s ancient city still maintains the double-chessboard layout of parallel waterways and roads, with rivers and streets adjacent.

05 Tiger Hill Pagoda

Known as the “top scenic spot in Wu”, Tiger Hill is a World Cultural Heritage site and a national 5A tourist attraction. The thousand-year Yunyan Temple Pagoda within the scenic area is the second leaning pagoda in the world and also the earliest architectural relic along the Jiangnan section of the canal.

06 Panmen Water-and-Land Gate

One of the eight gates of the ancient Wu capital, Panmen boasts the only existing water-and-land city gate in China and the highest single-arch ancient stone bridge remaining in the province – Wumen Bridge. Panmen was once a transportation hub in southwestern Suzhou and a bustling commercial area.

07 Hengtang Post Station

Hengtang Post Station is one of only two surviving post station relics along the Jiangnan section of the canal, and also the only preserved post station remains in Suzhou, holding a vital position in China’s postal transportation history. The Caiyun Bridge connects to the post station by a long causeway, and the bridge’s north pier and the post pavilion beside the bridge complement each other, composing a unique waterside landscape.

08 Shihu Five Causeways

North of Shihu Lake borders the canal, and it leans against Shangfang Mountain to the west, making it an important water source for the canal. It presents visitors with a magnificent scene of a vast bright mirror. The Wu Causeway, Yue Causeway, Shi Causeway, Yang Causeway, and Fan Causeway each feature distinctive scenery, winding across the water surface.

09 Baodai Bridge

Baodai Bridge spans the east outlet of Dantai Lake, alongside the west side of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal. Its unique 53-arch design looks from afar like a treasure belt waving over the water countryside. “Like a whale’s back touching the clouds, like a long rainbow lying over the waves, like a jade belt floating on water, graceful as a swimming dragon.” Quietly lying beside the canal for centuries, it deserves Qianlong’s praise as “the number one bridge in Wu.”

10 Pingwang · Four Rivers Confluence

Pingwang Town is located in the middle of Wujian District. Here the canal splits into three towards Qiantang and converges with the Taipu River, forming a breathtaking scene of four rivers merging. Today’s Pingwang Town not only preserves the ancient charm of a Jiangnan waterside town but also offers programs such as the Canal One-Day Living Theater, extending the thousand-year canal cultural vein and outlining a brand-new Jiangnan appearance.

Listen to Autumn Sounds – Music of Eastern Wu

Kunqu Opera and Pingtan (storytelling and ballad singing) both originated in Suzhou and flourished in Suzhou. One is a world-class “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”, the other among the first to be inscribed on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Since you are in Suzhou, how can you not enjoy them?

01 Kunqu Opera

A line “Without entering a garden, how can one know such spring beauty is like this?” immerses us in the world of this “ancestor of all theatrical forms”. The art of Kunqu has a long history. Originating in Suzhou, Kunqu dominated the Chinese theater scene for nearly three hundred years since the mid-Ming Dynasty. Come to Suzhou to appreciate Kunqu art and embark on a journey chasing leisurely life and ethereal artistic conception in theater.

“A soft, lingering tune murmured low; twin shadows interweave, promising beautiful music.” The delicate and graceful Kunqu winds through the small lanes, each soft chant carrying the unique flavor of Jiangnan towns.

02 Pingtan

Once the singing of Suzhou Pingtan begins, the land of Wu truly becomes Gusu. The soft Wu dialect gathers here into a trickling stream, infinitely winding, entwining melancholy. Come to Suzhou to savor Pingtan art. The charm of sound slowly drips from the ancient tiled eaves, breaking through the frozen layers accumulated deep within time, transforming into clear Pingtan tunes that knock on your long-sealed heart.

To let more people appreciate the beauty of Suzhou’s musical arts, “Jiangnan Small Performance Venues” and “Jiangnan Small Theaters” bring characteristic cultural performances into hotels, scenic areas, and distinctive neighborhoods, providing performance services for visitors and citizens to enjoy traditional Suzhou opera and storytelling programs.

03 Jiangnan Small Performance Venues

As night falls and lanterns light up, accompanied by the tinkling of string instruments, Wu soft speech is gently intoned. Jiangnan small performance venues with distinct styles and features come to life across Suzhou at night. Each performance lasts half an hour and is mainly staged on Fridays and Saturdays. Tourists and citizens can purchase tickets to enjoy the music.

04 Jiangnan Small Theaters

Jiangnan small theaters are wonderful vessels of elegant Jiangnan. Taking the opportunity of the 3rd Jiangnan Culture & Arts Festival, a series of summer and autumn performances will be launched. Through unique theaters and one-garden-one-feature settings, with rich expressive forms such as drama, opera, musicals, and children’s plays, Jiangnan’s characteristic literary aesthetics will be brought right to your side.
