02 Ginkgo Yellow
“Patterned apricot wood made the beams, thatched with fragrant grass.” Suzhou’s autumn is the color of ginkgo. As the autumn wind rises, the small leaves turn golden yellow, adorning the paradise of Gusu; as the wind strengthens, ginkgo leaves leave the branches, swirling and fluttering in a waltz, covering the poetic world.
Tiger Hill in autumn brims with infinite antiquity. The pagoda half-hidden among golden ginkgoes creates an unrivaled scene. As deep autumn arrives, the enchanting golden hue of Dinghui Temple, Taiping Zen Temple, and Zijin Nunnery spreads out. Zen, autumn mood, and comfort blend, carefree and content.

03 Reed Flower White
“Lush reeds and rushes, dew turns to frost.” Reed flowers grow by the water, and each autumn they bloom like snow, resembling a dream. When a gentle breeze stirs, layers of reed flowers dance and swirl, adding a touch of tenderness and softness to Suzhou’s clear autumn.
Reed flowers love the water; Taihu Lake is excellent for enjoying them. The rippling blue waves set off the white fluffy reed flowers; with an autumn breeze, oh, how beautiful! Looking along the long plank path, the beauty deep within the reed flowers appears and disappears. If by chance a boat returns late, with fishermen singing at dusk, distant mountains, nearby waters, and the autumn sun add a great deal of poetry to the reed marsh.
Shajiabang is famous for its vast water surface and continuous reed marshes. In the lake and ponds, water caltrops and lotuses intermingle, reeds grow thickly. In autumn, reed flowers blossom, a full expanse of silvery white. Savor Autumn Fragrance – Jiangnan Aromas
01 Osmanthus Fragrance
“Why should they need light green or deep red? They are naturally the finest blooms.” Osmanthus does not win favor with bright dazzling luster or coquettish colors. Its hue is light, its fragrance strong; distant traces, sparse feelings, gentle and soft, like a demure Suzhou “little miss,” possessing a unique and moving autumn charm.
The most exquisite and elegant autumn colors are hidden in the Lingering Garden. The “Smelling Osmanthus Fragrance Pavilion” in the garden was built specifically for appreciating osmanthus and enjoying its scent. This pavilion is open on all four sides, surrounded by cluster-planted osmanthus. The fragrance pervades the air, and without leaving the city, one gains the delight of mountains and forests.
Guangfu Yaoshang Village, one of the five major osmanthus bases in China, is truly a “Osmanthus Village.” Far from the city’s hustle and bustle, in golden autumn, the fragrance of osmanthus here drifts for ten li — absolutely superb!

02 Rice Flower Fragrance
“Rice fragrant and ripe in late autumn, thousands of acres connected by crisscrossing paths.” In autumn, the rice fields are the richest and most joyfully abundant places. This is the “crystal palace” of the “ultimate Gusu delicacy” Yangcheng Lake hairy crab. 01 Wumen Wangting
Wangting is the first town along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal entering Suzhou. Bai Juyi’s poem “Lamplights thread through village markets, music ascends post towers” depicts the prosperous scene of ancient Wangting. Over the course of a thousand years of history, Wangting has preserved the cultural imprints of rice cultivation, Liangzhu culture, Songze culture, and ancient post culture.
02 Xushuguan
Xushuguan has long been known as “a strategic point of Jiangnan, a bustling pier in Wu,” a thousand-year ancient town that flourished because of the Grand Canal. In the first year of the Jingtai reign, it became one of the seven major customs posts in the country, hence the name Xushuguan.
03 Maple Bridge Night Mooring
The Maple Bridge Scenic Area is located west of the ancient city of Suzhou. It arose from an immortal poem and flourished because of the babbling canal. Ancient Maple Bridge, ancient Hanshan Temple, ancient Maple Bridge Town, ancient Tieling Pass, and the Tieling Pass Battle Historical Exhibition together connect the past and present of Maple Bridge.
04 Pingjiang Ancient Lanes
The Pingjiang ancient lanes are the most typical and complete historical and cultural conservation area of the ancient city of Suzhou, truly the epitome of the ancient city. To this day, Suzhou’s ancient city still maintains the double-chessboard layout of parallel waterways and roads, with rivers and streets adjacent.
05 Tiger Hill Pagoda
Known as the “top scenic spot in Wu”, Tiger Hill is a World Cultural Heritage site and a national 5A tourist attraction. The thousand-year Yunyan Temple Pagoda within the scenic area is the second leaning pagoda in the world and also the earliest architectural relic along the Jiangnan section of the canal.
06 Panmen Water-and-Land Gate
One of the eight gates of the ancient Wu capital, Panmen boasts the only existing water-and-land city gate in China and the highest single-arch ancient stone bridge remaining in the province – Wumen Bridge. Panmen was once a transportation hub in southwestern Suzhou and a bustling commercial area.
07 Hengtang Post Station
Hengtang Post Station is one of only two surviving post station relics along the Jiangnan section of the canal, and also the only preserved post station remains in Suzhou, holding a vital position in China’s postal transportation history. The Caiyun Bridge connects to the post station by a long causeway, and the bridge’s north pier and the post pavilion beside the bridge complement each other, composing a unique waterside landscape.
08 Shihu Five Causeways
North of Shihu Lake borders the canal, and it leans against Shangfang Mountain to the west, making it an important water source for the canal. It presents visitors with a magnificent scene of a vast bright mirror. The Wu Causeway, Yue Causeway, Shi Causeway, Yang Causeway, and Fan Causeway each feature distinctive scenery, winding across the water surface.
09 Baodai Bridge
Baodai Bridge spans the east outlet of Dantai Lake, alongside the west side of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal. Its unique 53-arch design looks from afar like a treasure belt waving over the water countryside. “Like a whale’s back touching the clouds, like a long rainbow lying over the waves, like a jade belt floating on water, graceful as a swimming dragon.” Quietly lying beside the canal for centuries, it deserves Qianlong’s praise as “the number one bridge in Wu.”
10 Pingwang · Four Rivers Confluence
Pingwang Town is located in the middle of Wujian District. Here the canal splits into three towards Qiantang and converges with the Taipu River, forming a breathtaking scene of four rivers merging. The 3rd Grand Canal Culture and Tourism Expo
From September 22 to 25, 2021, the 3rd Grand Canal Culture and Tourism Expo will be held in Suzhou. Node cities from along the ancient canal will gather together to share the canal’s glory!
This Canal Expo features six major segments with 19 key activities, mainly including Night Tour of Gusu, Opening Ceremony, Theme Performances, Exhibitions, Theme Forums, and Interactive Linkages, presenting an endless stream of canal cultural feasts.
China Kunqu Opera Art Festival
The China Kunqu Opera Art Festival is a national-level cultural event hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government. Held every three years in Suzhou since 2000, it has been successfully held for seven consecutive editions. This Kunqu Art Festival has selected 22 outstanding Kunqu full-length plays and excerpt ensembles from across the country to participate, and has also invited outstanding performances from four local opera genres — Gui Opera, Gaojia Opera, Sichuan Opera, and Suzhou Opera.
