In the warm spring of March, as flowers bloom, it's time for the annual flower-viewing season. In this beautiful season, we made a special trip to Wuxi, Jiangsu, to admire the renowned cherry blossoms and enjoy a romantic visual feast. Chasing blooms, embracing spring – not letting the season slip away.

This trip lasted just four days from March 18 to 21, with about a day and a half spent on travel, leaving only about two and a half days to explore Wuxi. But thanks to a well-planned itinerary, besides visiting the key attractions—Yuantouzhu Scenic Area on Taihu Lake, one of the 'world's three great cherry blossom viewing spots,' and the new bloom-watching destination Nianhua Bay—we also squeezed in Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal, Xihui Park, Huishan Ancient Town, the Former Residence of Xue Fucheng, the Former Residence of Qian Zhongshu, the Gu Yuxiu Memorial Hall, and more. Though time was short, we gained plenty: broadened our horizons and refreshed our spirits. Another quick, fun getaway!

First Stop: Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal Scenic Area (Day 1, March 18)

After flying from Shantou to Wuxi, we checked into the hotel around 5 p.m. We'd skipped lunch to catch our flight, so we quickly found a local restaurant to fill our stomachs. Then, a short walk brought us to the Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal Scenic Area.

Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal Scenic Area is in the heart of Wuxi, where faux-ancient water-town buildings mix with old Ming and Qing dynasty houses. There are sights to see, along with bars, restaurants, and small shops. It's a classic Jiangnan water-town scene, with Ming- and Qing-era architecture lining the canal.

Today was Saturday, so the weekend crowd was thick and bustling. As night fell, the old houses with whitewashed walls and black tiles lit up along the ancient canal, with strings of red lanterns reflecting on the water. The faux-ancient buildings on both shores looked especially enchanting under the lights, drawing visitors to pause and admire.

1. The Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal Scenic Area is more beautiful at night than during the day. Arrive in the afternoon or early evening to see the daytime view, then stay for the stunning night scenery.

2. It gets extremely crowded on holidays, especially around Nanchan Temple Commercial Street and Qingming Bridge. A boat ride is a more relaxing and enjoyable way to explore.

Second Stop: Nianhua Bay (Day 2, March 19)

Nianhua Bay lies west of Lingshan Buddhist Scenic Spot, a fair distance from downtown. The town is built in an antique style, with beige and white buildings topped by sweeping blue-tiled roofs, wooden doors and columns, and dotted with bridges, streams, and garden vignettes—a perfect retreat for relaxing and recharging. Stepping into Nianhua Bay feels like entering a utopia; everything is dreamy yet real. Along the main street 'One Flower, One World' and various nooks, you'll find charming shops selling crafts that keep you browsing endlessly.

In spring, the cherry blossoms and other flowers are abundant and beautiful, decorating the area with grace and color. The site bustles with visitors, yet a peaceful vibe prevails. We started exploring around 9 a.m. and didn't leave until 4 p.m., spending nearly seven hours wandering around. With fresh air and lovely surroundings, everything felt light and delightful.

1. Nianhua Bay's cherry blossoms may not be as famous as those at Yuantouzhu, but there are plenty of trees, and they look stunning against the bridges, streams, pastoral scenery, and architecture. It's a great spot for cherry blossom viewing.

2. The adjacent Lingshan Buddhist Scenic Spot is also a well-known Wuxi attraction; you can set aside extra time to visit both.

3. The town has a variety of eateries, so you can easily sit down for a bite and a drink when you tire of walking.

Third Stop: Xihui Park and Huishan Ancient Town (Day 2, March 19)

Leaving Nianhua Bay, we hailed a Didi to Huishan Ancient Town, but the driver dropped us at the entrance of Xihui Park instead. We just went with it, strolling through the park until we reached Huishan Ancient Town at the other end.

Xihui Park (Xihui Scenic Area) is a national key park and scenic area. Huishan Ancient Town boasts numerous cultural relics, with over 200 scenic spots spanning thousands of years—ancient streets, gardens, temples, springs, academies, poetry societies, and ancestral halls. Inside the park, you'll find the famous Jichang Garden and the 'Second Best Spring Under Heaven,' which inspired the erhu masterpiece 'The Moon Reflected in Erquan.'

1. Huishan Ancient Town itself is free, but Xihui Park and Huishan Temple (home to Jichang Garden and the Second Spring) require tickets. If you have time, see them all, but simply wandering the ancient town is also pleasant.

2. The Xihui Scenic Area encompasses Huishan Historical and Cultural Street, Huishan Ancestral Hall Group, Huishan Ancient Town, and Xihui Park—all connected, making it easy to explore together.

Fourth Stop: Taihu Lake Yuantouzhu Scenic Area (Day 3, March 20)

Yuantouzhu is a peninsula on the northern shore of Taihu Lake, named for its resemblance to a turtle's head rising from the water. Surrounded by water on three sides, it offers vast lake and mountain views, dotted with sailing boats, as well as idyllic countryside scenes with bridges and streams—truly the best of Taihu scenery. Here you can explore expansive gardens, take a boat to experience the misty lake, or climb to the fairy isle for hidden spots. In spring, come to savor the cherry blossoms and capture the essence of 'the ultimate beauty of Taihu lies at Yuantouzhu.' The mass blooming of cherry trees is a spectacular sight, with a lively Cherry Blossom Festival — making it Wuxi's most famous cherry blossom destination.

It's said that Yuantouzhu is home to over 30,000 cherry trees of nearly 100 varieties. When they bloom, the trees are a froth of pink clouds; in the spring breeze, petals flutter like snow—a sight too beautiful for words. That's why cherry blossom viewing at Yuantouzhu was the highlight of our Wuxi trip, so we set aside a full day. With plenty of time, we could relax and take it all in. We arrived before 9 a.m. and stayed until almost 5 p.m., a full eight hours. Our only break was a bowl of spare rib noodles at Hengyun Noodle House near Cherry Blossom Avenue around lunchtime.

1. Early cherry blossoms at Yuantouzhu usually start blooming in early March, mostly single or semi-double petals. Based on flowering time, they're categorized as early or late. Many varieties of early bloomers, with a blooming period of about a week from opening to falling; late bloomers last 7–10 days. Depending on temperature, there's a 5–12 day gap between the two, during which some hybrid varieties flower.

2. Typically, the Yoshino cherry trees reach full bloom in mid-to-late March, the best viewing period. But the exact timing depends on the weather; a cold snap can delay it. We visited on the 20th, and some trees were only partially open—probably a few days away from peak bloom.

3. During peak bloom, Yuantouzhu is packed, and weekends bring overwhelming crowds, with many access roads jammed. If you can, visit on weekdays to avoid the worst rush.

Fifth Stop: Former Residences of Xue Fucheng, Qian Zhongshu, and More (Day 4, March 21)

We had a 4 p.m. flight back to Shantou, leaving us with a little over half a day. Initially we'd planned to visit famous spots like Liyuan Garden or Meiyuan Garden, but with light rain and the distance, we switched to smaller sites near our hotel: the Former Residence of Xue Fucheng (a notable modern thinker, diplomat, and early reformist), the Former Residence of Qian Zhongshu (a modern scholar renowned across China and the West), the Wuxi Stone Tablet Museum, the Wuxi National College Memorial Hall, and the Gu Yuxiu Memorial Hall (a polymath in science, arts, and education, and a prominent modern Wuxi figure). We visited all five in that order.

Visiting former residences and memorial halls offers a window into the lives of these historical figures—well worth the time if you get the chance.

1. All these sites are free—thumbs up! Xue Fucheng's former residence is particularly spacious, with a garden full of Jiangnan charm, very pleasing to the eye.

2. The sites are close to each other, so you can easily visit them one after another.
