Sydney's Most Understated Noble Garden: Swain Gardens

Sydney's Most Understated Noble Garden: Swain Gardens

📍 Sydney · 👁 69 reads

Swain Gardens, hidden deep in Sydney's northern Kiara district along a very inconspicuous small road. The dense thickets of the primeval forest completely isolate the park from the outside world, so many people pass by without noticing it, yet inside lies a hidden world of picturesque beauty at every turn.

The garden has no gate; a sloping path serves as its entrance.

History of Swain Gardens

Swain Gardens. This is the famous Sydney bookseller and former Treasurer Arthur Newling Swain, who in the early 1960s purchased 3.4 hectares of bushland beside his home. He spent ten years carefully designing and planning while preserving the natural environment and features of the primeval forest. He built sandstone bridges over the creek, constructed terraced independent small gardens and lawns layer by layer along both sides of the river valley, and interconnected them with winding paths of moss-covered cobblestones. He also built hilltop pavilions, stone sculptures, and multiple benches and terraces on the well-arranged garden lawns. The result is a noble garden with open views yet intimate, compact, refined, and low-key—a quintessentially English countryside garden that creates a peaceful and orderly retreat away from a chaotic world, earning it the reputation as Sydney's version of "Downton Abbey."

When Mr. Swain died in 1973, he bequeathed the garden to the National Trust. In 1980, the garden was transferred to the local Ku-ring-gai Council and opened to the public free of charge.

Inside the garden, there are two lawns with lush green grass, standing out vividly amidst the riot of colors throughout the garden. Strolling through them brings tranquility and refreshment to the mind—undoubtedly, this is the crowning touch of the garden's artistic design!

Along both sides of the river valley, terraced independent small gardens and lawns are built layer by layer, offering open views yet feeling intimate, compact, refined, and low-key—a noble garden with a strong English countryside atmosphere, creating a peaceful and orderly sanctuary away from a turbulent world.
