This year, the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony will take place on December 2nd. The National Christmas Tree puts Washington, D.C. on the map during the holiday season for good reason. The magnificent conifer lives in President's Park at the Ellipse, surrounded by trees decorated with handmade ornaments from all 56 U.S. states and territories, including Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. Holiday Lights
From November 19th to January 6th, 2022, neighborhoods across the nation's capital are decorating their main streets with colorful lights. Additionally, vendors in each neighborhood are offering holiday specials and promotions throughout December to encourage local shopping. You can enjoy this festive cheer in Columbia Heights, Mount Pleasant, Dupont Circle, Logan Circle, U Street, Woodley Park, and other places.
Gaze at the magnificent U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree
Each year, a tree from a U.S. National Forest is selected and brought to the Capitol, where it stands on the West Lawn for the entire season. This year's tree comes from the Six Rivers National Forest in California. The tree will be lit in early December.
Experience the festive spectacle of the Downtown Holiday Market
This free downtown market has expanded its space this year to allow for social distancing. Set amid the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, the beloved market spans two blocks of F Street between 7th and 9th Streets. You can browse a diverse array of goods from dozens of pop-up tents while enjoying live music with seasonal flavors as a backdrop. Locally roasted coffee and freshly made mini doughnuts can satisfy cold-weather cravings, creating a festive atmosphere you won't find elsewhere in Washington. There will be an entrance at 8th and F Streets. The market is open from November 19th to December 23rd (closed November 25th and December 6th), from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Admire the world's largest menorah
Hanukkah kicks off with the lighting of the world's largest menorah, standing in President's Park at the Ellipse, where visitors are greeted with potato latkes, doughnuts, menorah kits, and dreidels. A military band will provide the soundtrack. Over the eight days of Hanukkah, a new candle is lit each day as is tradition. Due to COVID-19, special measures will be in effect, and seating will be limited. The Hanukkah opening ceremony is on November 28th at 3:15 p.m.
Explore the National Arboretum's conifer collection
The United States National Arboretum is full of treasures, from the Capitol Columns to the Bonsai Museum to the 7-acre conifer collection. This collection is one of the most comprehensive in the world, with 1,400 specimens forming an oasis perfect for getting lost or simply enjoying the view from the overlook. You will be amazed by the vast diversity and adaptability of the conifer family.
Dupont Circle Holiday Pop-Up
Artists and makers will set up in front of retail stores near Dupont Circle for an annual event hosted by the Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets. About 50 vendors will sell paintings, scarves, chocolates, jewelry, pottery, and other holiday-themed goods. The pop-up will feature imported foods, artwork, shoes, and more. The event takes place on December 4th, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Park View Holiday Market Pop-Up
Hook Hall beer garden will host this popular Park View farmers market pop-up for three consecutive Saturdays. Many vendors will offer food and holiday gifts from local artists, makers, and producers at this festive market on December 4th, 11th, and 18th, ahead of the market's official reopening in January 2022.
