As the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties, Xi’an has been a wildly popular travel destination in recent years. Besides Datang Everbright City, the Terracotta Army, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Bell Tower, when you come to Xi’an, don’t miss Xi’an Eternal Love! You’ve likely heard of the sensational Eternal Love shows that took Hangzhou, Guilin, and Sanya by storm — these stunning live performances even leave foreign visitors marveling in amazement!

Xi’an Eternal Love follows a young overseas Chinese woman returning to her roots, opening a call from across the millennia. The show is divided into chapters: The Light of Banpo, The Islet on the Ba River, Yu the Great Tames the Flood, The Great Tang Dynasty, and The Silk Road. Each chapter tells a different story, using cutting-edge sound, light, and digital technology to present Xi’an’s historical tales, myths, and cultural heritage through song, dance, acrobatics, and other art forms.

Prologue – The Light of Banpo: Cattle, sheep, and ducks take the stage together. In the glow of civilization’s dawn, Xi’an — this ancient, mysterious land — bears the weight of history’s transformations. Our ancestors, battling nature, learned to make pottery, fish, hunt, build homes, and farm, creating a splendid prehistoric civilization, the first ray of light for the ancient East.

Act I – The Islet on the Ba River: The cry of waterfowl carries us back through a thousand years to the beautiful banks of the Ba River. On this land where China’s first poetry anthology, The Book of Songs, was born, graceful maidens dance across the water, framed by green hills, clear streams, and weeping willows along the Ba.

The elegant figures with clear water and red umbrellas transport you into the poetic charm of Jiangnan. Bathed in exquisite light and shadows, it is a dreamlike painting.

“Guan-guan go the ospreys, on the islet in the river. The beautiful and virtuous lady, a fine match for the gentleman.” As a beautiful girl arrives on a boat, the poem comes to mind unbidden.

Orchid wine in bowls of jade, gleaming amber light — here I forget this is not my homeland. Xi’an Eternal Love also blends acrobatics and stunts, delivering an unparalleled, unforgettable immersive performance that condenses a majestic epic into thrilling, moving segments.

The stage is not fixed; it moves, rises, splits. Unexpected surprises pop up throughout the show, and after each scene, spontaneous enthusiastic applause erupts from the audience.

Yu the Great Tames the Flood: In today’s Sanguo Village in Huyi District, the legend lives on. Amid many flood myths in human history, only one man chose to confront the deluge head-on — our ancestor Yu the Great. Seeing people around him perish in the floods, Yu passed his home three times without entering, sacrificing his family for the greater good. In this scene, 3,000 tons of water cascade down, instantly turning the stage into a vast ocean. Performers climb ropes and spin at dizzying heights with red silk around their necks, and even the towering waves are rendered with breathtaking realism.

The Great Tang Dynasty: The Eternal Love stage is everywhere. Just as we fix our eyes on the performers, the lights dim and actors descend from above — now we are in the Great Tang Dynasty. The Tang was China’s most glorious era; we walk into Chang’an to relive its peerless elegance. The bustling capital sees an endless stream of merchants and travelers, music and dance everywhere, a scene of thriving prosperity. Suddenly, a beautiful “foreign dancer” appears beside us, then dances toward the stage, making us feel like Tang emperors feasting on a grand spectacle.

Performances happen not just onstage but all around — flying up, dropping down, dancing shadows emerging beside you, graceful silhouettes passing overhead. Exotic dances, lavish costumes, and magnificent sets ignite the resplendent Tang atmosphere, engraving Xi’an’s pride as the Tang capital deep in your memory. During the show, the front rows of the audience even separate and merge as each scene demands — a truly unique experience.

The Silk Road: This moved me the most. A group of warriors escorts the foreign dancer back to her homeland. Crossing the desert, they face fierce weather and ambushes by bandits. The warriors die on the Silk Road, unfolding a legendary tale of love and sacrifice. On this path of undying love, yellow sand billows, camel bells ring, people shout and horses neigh — hundreds of cubic meters of sand sweep over the theater, instantly turning it into a desert of the Western Regions.

Most heart-wrenching: after the camel leader dies, the dancer is heartbroken, and even the camel kneels beside its fallen master, as if trying to rouse him, to walk the last stretch with him… Finally, we watch the camel and dancer disappear into the distance. If you were there, I’m sure you’d be just as deeply moved.

The show uses a mix of virtual and real effects. The water curtain and flood are real — those in the front rows clearly feel the moisture and even little splashes on their faces. In just 60 minutes, you glimpse the rise and fall of Chang’an, as if immersed in the city’s long past and historical transformation.

5D Live-Action Drama The Great Earthquake: Besides the classic Xi’an Eternal Love, don’t miss the immersive experience drama The Great Earthquake. It realistically recreates the devastating Wenchuan earthquake of 2008. Uniquely, audience members are invited onstage to play roles like nurses and soldiers. We go back to May 12, 2008, in Yingxiu Town, Wenchuan. One second is warm, romantic, light-hearted — the next, a deafening roar and the earth shatters, changing countless lives forever.

At first, I worried these last-minute volunteers couldn’t pull it off. But after just one rehearsal, they performed so convincingly you couldn’t tell professional actors from the amateurs. Having personally experienced a major earthquake, I couldn’t stop the tears streaming down my face during this scene.

If you think Xi’an Eternal Love is only a stage show, you’re mistaken. Here you’ll find all kinds of intangible cultural heritage shops and streets modeled on ancient styles. The entire complex is built in the architectural style of the Great Tang. From Chang’an Gate to Songcheng Tower, every step reveals a new scene that fully captures the grandeur of the Tang Dynasty.

Guoyan Street and Yanyun Street are lined with shops. Besides traditional handicrafts, you’ll find snacks, drinks, costume stores, accessories, and gift shops. Costumed vendors peddle their wares, and for a moment, you feel disoriented — have you really traveled back in time?

The day I visited, it happened to rain, so there were fewer visitors than usual. On sunny days, the park buzzes with all sorts of fun interactive shows. Flash mobs, Indian dancers, Huayin old tune performances, and the “throwing the embroidered ball to choose a husband” show — entertaining and fun for all ages.

Xi’an Eternal Love is a huge entertainment kingdom, with one show after another. A whole afternoon dazzles with excitement, and there are plenty of photogenic spots — a single day isn’t enough. The program schedule scrolls on large screens around the park; specific times and venues are announced via the park’s broadcast system.
