How to Enjoy Xi'an Songcheng? Step into Chang'an, and Borrow a Rainy Day in Songcheng
"Her robe is a cloud, her face a flower; spring breezes brush the balustrade, dew glistens thick. If not seen atop the Jade Mountain, then met beneath the moon by the Yao Terrace." A tune of Qing Ping Diao, and I enter Chang’an. One city of Chang’an holds half of Chinese history📖, and I absorbed it all at Xi’an Songcheng. It was my first time experiencing the Eternal Love series of immersive historical spectacles—the ebb and flow of the ages, the vast river of time, far more breathtaking than I’d ever imagined. After the show, I was caught by a sudden rain and waited for it to stop before stepping out of Chang’an. On a rainy night, Songcheng feels even more like the ancient capital.
How to enjoy "Xi’an Eternal Love"? Don Han dynasty-style costumes and makeup, and together, let’s step into Chang’an.
One city of Chang’an holds half of Chinese history. Xi’an bears the vicissitudes of history, carrying the most glorious pride of the Chinese nation through the long river of time. Telling stories in this city is like drawing back a curtain—it seems to narrate the past and present of a single town, yet inadvertently spotlights the brightest moments of every historical era of the Chinese people. At Xi’an Songcheng, get ready for a journey back to the Tang Dynasty.
Stroll through the park—are you ready for time travel? Xi’an Songcheng has plenty to see and do, and when you wear traditional costumes, it’s easy to snap envy-inducing photos. It’s perfect for couples, trips with girlfriends, or family outings. From little kids to elders, everyone finds their own delight. You can rent Hanfu outfits right in the Songcheng street market, with everything from hair styling and makeup to full attire. To save time, you can also get dressed up before arriving. Choose a Hanfu studio you like in Xi’an—there are many such shops in the city that include makeup, hair, and clothing, and some even offer photography. I searched for one near my hotel in the morning and got fully styled, so I could jump straight into the fun at Songcheng.
The Xi’an Songcheng Performance Kingdom is huge, and the Tang-era atmosphere hits you the moment you enter. The street layout, architecture, and decoration all reveal the splendor of the great Tang. Wandering through Sky City, Chang’an Gate, Songcheng Tower, Chang’an Square, Songcheng Square… you’ll keep thinking you’ve slipped back into the Tang Dynasty. I happened to catch a rainy day. I have an umbrella, so I borrow a rain from the ancient city. Strolling through Xi’an Songcheng in a fine drizzle has a special charm. On sunny days, you’ll find brilliant performances along Chang’an Gate, Guoyan Street, Yanyun Street and elsewhere—flash-mob style national fashion shows, "National Beauty and Heavenly Fragrance," "Jianghu Encounters," "Indian Maidens," and more. Though I didn’t see robes and sleeves flutter in the gentle rain, I felt the quiet elegance of Songcheng.
The grand song-and-dance show “Xi’an Eternal Love” brings a city’s history back to life. Don’t blink—romantic poetry amid the willows of the Ba River, the glorious chapter of Chang’an in the Tang Dynasty, the Silk Road legend stretching across thousands of miles of sand, the resounding echoes of the nation’s revival… all these epic transformations unfold in a one-hour stage production. It’s immersive: pay attention above your head and all around, because the boundaries between stage and audience are constantly blurred. Three thousand tons of floodwater pour down, hundreds of cubic meters of yellow sand sweep over you—using a mix of illusion and reality, the show breaks the wall between performers and spectators, letting you dive into an artistic feast.
The performance tells the story of a Chinese girl returning to her homeland to trace her roots, embarking on a journey to rediscover national memory. With unique artistic techniques, it selects fragments of Xi’an’s culture and divides them into sections: Light of Civilization, Islet of the Ba River, Yu the Great Tames the Flood, Glory of the Tang Dynasty, and The Silk Road. “Xi’an Eternal Love” is staged in Theater No. 1. I recommend arriving 15 minutes early, getting your ticket checked, and finding your seat so you don’t miss a moment.

When the park is about to close, lanterns begin to glow—Chang’an at night is the real Chang’an. If you’re not in a hurry, don’t rush off after the show; wander around a bit more, take in the scenery. As dusk falls, Xi’an Songcheng takes on a different shimmer. Red lanterns and streams of light set the imagination running wild—yes, you’re dreaming of the Tang!
The scenic area is full of views that change with every step, each glance fresh and new. Tree-lined paths, Jinxiu Lake, Songcheng Tower, and Chang’an Tower play off each other, full of style.
🚗 How to get there:
Search navigation for "Expo Park Debao Gate," walk through Xi’an Songcheng Square and you’ll reach the entrance—get ready for a time-travel adventure. Located in northeastern Xi’an, it’s best to drive or take a taxi; public transport from the city center isn’t so convenient.
Tickets from 300 yuan (prices vary by showtime and seating area). I suggest booking e-tickets online; you can book same-day tickets until 17:30, get your ticket instantly, and enter by scanning your ID. Free cancellation up to one hour before showtime—very traveler-friendly.
🕒 Operating hours:
12:00 – 30 minutes after the last Eternal Love show ends.
(Shows and attractions may be adjusted due to weather or on-site conditions—check the park’s next-day announcement before going.)
A half-day is enough: the “Xi’an Eternal Love” show lasts one hour, and the rest of the time you can snap your way through the park.
