Must-Visit Attractions in Xi'an
Xi'an is one of the most influential ancient capitals in Chinese history, having served as the seat of the most dynasties. To the Chinese, it seems there is no other city like Xi'an, where the mere mention of its name sends your mind traveling through multiple eras.
This city, which has witnessed the rise and fall of 13 dynasties, is like a vast museum, a place with countless stories. In the 'Records of the Grand Historian,' Xi'an was praised as a 'golden city stretching a thousand li, a land of abundance.' Its scenic spots are mostly historical relics. The ancient city walls, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and the nearby Terracotta Warriors in Lintong are all not to be missed.
The Xi'an City Wall, also known as the Ming Dynasty City Wall, is the most complete ancient city fortification still standing in China. Through millennia, this wall has been fortunate to survive the rise and fall of dynasties. In the 1950s, it underwent large-scale preservation and subsequent restoration. Today, the wall has become a cultural icon of Xi'an. For locals, it is a go-to spot for leisure and entertainment, while for tourists, it is a must-see destination.
The Xi'an Bell Tower is the largest and best-preserved bell tower from ancient China. It hosts six bell chime performances daily. Standing 200 meters apart, the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower, both Ming Dynasty structures, echo each other. The Drum Tower is also one of the largest and best-preserved of its kind in China. Today, the Bell Tower has become a new architectural landmark that showcases the city's historical charm honed over centuries. During its latest restoration and reinforcement, the centuries-old bell tower was consolidated, ensuring it continues to stand tall in Xi'an, adding to its history and ongoing story.
The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is a brick pavilion-style pagoda, square in shape and tapering upward, with a winding staircase inside. On each floor, there are arched doorways on all four sides, offering panoramic views of the ancient Chang'an cityscape. It is said that the pagoda was built under the personal supervision of Master Xuanzang. Since its initial construction, the pagoda has undergone at least four different versions. Though each version varied greatly in interior and exterior style, it has endured a thousand years of vicissitudes and still stands intact today.
Museum of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shi Huang
The Terracotta Army in Shaanxi is a large burial pit within the mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang. Built on the original site, it is China's largest ancient military museum. The burial pits housing the warriors and horses face east from the west and are arranged in a '品' shape (forming a triangle). Pit No. 1, the first discovered, is rectangular and contains over 8,000 terracotta figures, with sloping entranceways on all four sides. To the left and right of Pit No. 1 are Pits No. 2 and No. 3, each a separate pit of terracotta warriors.
